I’ve got another theory to how Moana became a semi god. When Maui is telling the story of becoming a demigod it was a story of him being rejected by humans and adopted by the gods. Moana says maybe the ocean chose to save him because he was worthy. When moana saved the turtle she was proved worthy to become the demi god to save them. Also did he know for sure he was rejected by his parents? He may have run off like moana and the ocean saved him from drowning by accident.

Very nice, I know next to nothing about Polynesian mythologies so I would believe it if you told me there's a story of a human, pig and rooster being the children of an eel and a hummingbird. But apart from Maui being on an island for forever while the mother was supposedly human everything seems seamless :) And yes, Disney does put a lot of effort into their animations!

there's a major hole in mat's theory, what with Maui being stranded on an island alone for a thousand years. Moana was conceived, born, and grew up to about 16(according to tv tropes) before they met, so at most the mating ritual that led to Moana existing happened 17 years before they met. there is a pretty big number difference between 17 and 1000. there is still the possibility of Maui being Moana's grandpa though, so the shippers should still feel weird.
