Totally agree. It was better than resurrection in my opinion (not a hard reach) but at the same time both movies had the same foundations. The Aliens escape, and slowly kill the crew while they try to find a way off the research station and create a new hybrid Alien in the process." What pitch was that? Romulus or Resurrection?

@@anthonybrett While totally spitting in the face of the original film (yet again) by retconning the ending of the movie and nearly 50 years of firmly established lore. No Ripley you didn’t burn the alien up in a light speed thruster and then watch it spiral off into the endless void. The alien survived,cocooned itself, you know just in case someone picks it up and brings it aboard a space station. Let’s conveniently forget the Nostromo was diverted off course to secure a specimen of a possibility hostile organism and BRiNG IT TO EARTH for the BIO WEAPONS DIVISION.. Locating seven foot objects twenty years later in the vastness of deep space is piss easy. Because the wreckage of the Nostromo wouldn’t be utterly vaporised in a thermonuclear detonation with a blast radius of 30km. And the alien would obviously float in orbit with the wreckage lmao! Face huggers aren’t lethal anymore. You swat them away like flies. And who needs an egg these days . Facehuggers can conveniently be engineered from alien dna. (I just pretend there are only two films and forget the rest) I have trouble though trying to think of a story line that any hardcore fan would actually like. I mean, do you just make another film about a ship landing on LV426 and finding another egg? I would really hate to try and make a sequel to Aliens because I have no idea how to advance the story without exploring the origins of the ship on LV426, which is exactly what Scott "tried" to do with Prometheus. Romulus isn't just a "greatest hits" album. It's an album of re-recorded songs that were the band's greatest hits, with the band members now so old that they're more concerned with a painful hip or their backs playing up because they slept the wrong way the previous night, rather than recapturing the magic of the original recordings.

Well Disney believes that since they bought the franchise they can pretty much chop it op and put it back together as they see fit
@tjroelsma
@tjroelsma 4 ай бұрын
True, but I believe that's just part of the reason why they do it. Even Disney is learning that straying too far away from the originals means you lose the fans of the originals and that the so-called "new audience" doesn't exist. As Iger opened the gates to the activists when he needed their supoort to kick-start his political career, that totally failed because the activists immediately backstabbed him, they dug in deep and now Disney totally revolves around LGBT-whatever, The Message, Girlbosses, DEI and all the other acronyms/activist causes. And as they had the time to really dig in so deep, it's almost impossible to course-correct, because they will fight for their stance and positions all the way. This "dial back the woke/DEI/LGBT-whatever/etc a bit and sprinkle in ever more generous amounts of member berries" is like putting hot sauce on a sh** sandwich: it may mask the taste a bit, but it's still a sh** sandwich. But in my opinion there's also a third reason for it: in order to force people to accept the new, they have to destroy the old and beloved. And that is happening very actively: older movies and series are "sanitized" or "adjusted for modern audiences" and the originals are being destroyed so there won't be a going back. Personally I find that offensive, as the activists obviously want to control what I am allowed to watch, which is the first step in trying to control what I'm allowed to think (personal opinion).

It felt like the characters for “Alien: Romulus” were story grouped/ scrapbooked. Act 1 was good, Act 2 was mediocre, Act 3 was bad, and Act 3.5 was terrible in my opinion. Too many ‘member berries per scene, and this movie never had a chance to stand on its own. Alien: Romulus had neither the soul nor heart of the previous movies. I enjoyed the sound, some of the space scenes and the changing dynamic between Rain and Andy. The other characters with the exception of “Navarro” just didn’t seem like they would have been capable of operating a toaster oven, let alone breaking into a secret research station. Science mistakes abounded throughout that movie as did the timing. I would rank them from most favorite to least as: Alien Director’s cut, Aliens Director’s cut, Alien^3 theatrical, AVP Director’s cut, AVP: Requiem Director’s cut, Alien: Resurrection Director’s cut, Prometheus Director’s cut, Alien: Covenant Director’s cut, and finally Alien: Romulus. The change from the Rottweiler to an Ox in Alien^3 in the Director’s cut just ripped me right out of the film for me. The thing to remember about the Alien franchise is that this is a Lovecraftian series of movies without being within the Cthulhu mythos. Yes, the Phillip K. Dickian opinions and mindset of corporate malfeasance is omnipresent within the franchise, too. The real shame is that Fox/Disney had access to lots of Marvel scripts, possibly Dark Horse scripts for film ideas…. Instead we got jangly keys and the worst aspects of the worst Alien film franchise spat out faster than the heavy industry could churn.

There is no longer the need for more Alien films. I was done with Alien in 1992. All Fox/Disney have done is destroy the franchise with the partnership of Ridley Scott. What if I said Aliens is a Survival Horror film, like the original, and not in the action genre...? It's over 2 hours long and has less than 20 minutes of what could be described as action scenes. Most of the "action" is marines getting killed by aliens, but because they have guns it gets labelled "action". Action scenes: Marines shooting aliens during the initial sweep and during the last stand, Ripley driving the APC, Ripley fighting the Queen. That's it. About 17 minutes or so of "action". Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 are all from the same tree. One type of fruit. Resurrection is the oranges to the original trilogy's apples.

I agree with Nerd Cookies in that Romulus took away from the mystique of the Alien Xenos by going too much into the science (because Weyland-Yutani scientists discovered they see by heat and sound?).They can take a page out of X-Files, which in turn took its que from old murder mysteries by creating seemingly contradictory technical details about the creatures, ergo keeping the mystery. The Alien movies were never REALLY about the Aliens themselves, but about us, as humans. Alien and Aliens, arguably the best of the series, were more about humanity (one with us dealing with extreme isolation, and the other dealing with Vietnam). The Xenos were always a projection of our deepest fears (the rantings about Alien's psychosexualness is amplified by the phallic design and preying on male fears of penetration), so they should stick with that. Alien: Romulus isn't a bad movie, just bogged down with fan service. But one has to wonder, what does that say about us as a movie-going audience? The box office numbers were great!

Rob is right in saying the most frustrating thing with Prometheus and Covenant were the supposedly highly trained and hand selected crew doing the stupidest things possible. When the Prometheus lands after all that time in space they decide to instantly run to the derelict ship without any thought of accessing the situation first and planning a careful mission protocol, I knew the film was in trouble. Same with the dopey crew of Covenant running around the world of the Engineers with basically gear from REI instead of fully protective suits to guard against and bio or chemical hazards. Even though I adore the first two movies, it’s such a shame the writing makes so many blunders in the following movies and stifles them from reaching the heights of the earlier films.

Good balanced post. I'm the opposite. Just watched both again. I think what puts Aliens over the top is that it's an action movie that perfectly makes you care about the characters. Hudson has an arc from coward to going down in a blaze of glory, even Gorman redeems himself. Minor characters are fun and have great lines like Apone and even Frost. The dynamics w/Ripley and Hicks should be the blue print for female action heroes. If you ask people their favorite, you get varied responses bc there's so many fun characters. Alien introduces one of the greatest concepts in film, but it really just then plays like any other slasher film for me.

Becoming dumb is what killed it with the 4th installment, "Alien Resurrection" instead of "resurrecting it". Funny. We got a LOT of that in the Han Solo Trilogy in the EU and done quite well. The problem isn’t prequels (frankly there aren’t that many that I can even think of even though it’s a perfectly normal thing for novels), it’s what gets with them. Solo, the movie, was incredibly lazy in telling Han’s story. To actually do it justice would have required a miniseries.

Scott did not write the original movies, so he does not have the right to just pilfer scenes from them. They have to compensate everyone credited with their creation. So the original writers could easily file a class action and get a piece of this. However since the movie needs to clear $400m Worldwide to break even ($80m budget + $120m advertising with WW losing half to taxes and cinema cost), I doubt this will be profitable. If not, the courts usually do not award enough to bother. The legal fees eat up any profit. That is why they usually just accept writing credit on the project.

The only reason those stupid AvP films exist is because of that one scene in Predator 2. What's more interesting, is that in that same scene, the Predator throws him an old antique flintlock pistol, which is a direct reference to the comics. Even back then they were aware of the lore; they could have explored that further. But instead we get endless god-awful AvP movies.

While I absolutely agree with Robert Meyer Burnett, the thing is that Ridley Scott, as the creator of the franchise, probably had to accept that one James Cameron effectively made the franchise his with Aliens, as that is the film all the most memorable quotes and scenes of the entire franchise come from. So if Scott had a chance to stick it up to Cameron in Romulus (conveniently set before Aliens) by co-opting some of those lines, I can imagine him doing so, just to say "this is my franchise!". Assuming this was the thinking, petty and childish, though I don't think Scott cares at this point. Trying to take it in a completely new direction with Prometheus and Covenant obviously didn't work.

Too much thinking, not enough enjoying. Romulus, which I haven't seen yet, has been praised by critics and audiences. This notion of mystery being a main component can only be said about the first two films, with the rest of them simply building out the universe. I can't say that I mind that at all, and this video seems like it's searching for something to dislike, versus actually knowing that it dislikes any of it. Prometheus took two watch-throughs for me to really enjoy it, as it introduces a lot of information in a non-linear way - and I actually think is underrated. You can't have mystery in the 8th film in a franchise - it's simply not going to hit the same way - so they have to do something that harks back to the originals in terms of tone and plot - and apparently they did a decent job with it. You can't "steal" ideas from a franchise you're actively building in and from. This is a modern Alien film meant to be entertaining, and that seems to be an issue for people. It seems to me the expectations are way off, here. Maybe I'll change my mind once I see it - but to me this just seems like searching for something to complain about, when critics and fans are rating it over 80%, for what is essentially a horror film, and advertised as one. Not everything has to be deep or ruminated on - simply enjoyed.

Legally and morally yes. When they do it this poorly and screw the franchise (W-Y was getting updates from Rook, so claiming they do not have the ability to make face huggers without an egg is laughable), or that cocooned humans turn into eggs (which means the Engineers needs a lot of humans to make all the original eggs), then it can also kill that franchise. This is why retconning needs to be treated as time travel in any story. If you are going to change something (auto-aim guns with an insane ammo count that auto-targets the head) then you MUST have a plausible means to explain why it is not in subsequent stories (Aliens). Failing to do that, mean that casuals that have never seen the originals may like it, but only until they see how poorly this retcon was carried out. That is how franchises die.
@tm5123

@@EnsignRedshirtRicky So you actually want a ton of exposition, to explain some small difference in technology? For my part, I don't really care that much. Its a Wayland-Yutani research station, perhaps they have some better guns, than the expendable grunts they send to clean up things. They even tied it into the universe as a different model to the standard pulse rifle, and the same auto target tech is already on the smartguns in Aliens, so wheres the massive issue with a compact form in perhaps a really expensive version of the same gun. I do think alien has a bit of an identity crisis with the whole alien vs black goo thing, I don't think it helps with the story. But Ridley has permanently alterd the course of the story with Prometheus and Covenant, and I don't really mind the way Romulus went with it. How many movie creators, who have flopped a movie, have been sued for negligence of failing to follow up on past lore? I think if it was possible to sue for this, nobody would ever make a sequel lol.

1. The problem with Ridley Scott is not him stealing from Cameron, but the fact he stole from himself in Prometheus by replicating the scene of the android asking for more life from his creator in Blade Runner... I've seen hours of videos on these movies and nobody touches or seems to have a problem with this!!! 2. Alien is the better movie because there's no perfect cut of Aliens: the theatrical cut leaves the scene of Ripley finding out her daughter is dead which establishes the maternity themes and needs for the character; and the director's cut is too long with unnecesary scenes with slow down the pace of the film. 3. Alien Romulus is The Force Awakens of the Alien Franchise, is a pleasent movie because it hit all the nostalgic points right (except for that horrble deepfake). Rob is right, they could mmjave made so much more with the human xenomorph, but ideology plays too much on Hollywood projects now... 4. And the worst part is only MatPat before quitting is the only one whi has pointed out Hollywood's new brainwashing trend to makes love AI. Remember the last two movies with David, the android from hell. In Romulus we got Andy, the android who's rescued by the human Rain as if it truly was her brother. That's Hollywood tenet now: Male is evil, embrace AI and consume product".
