It's interesting that Chris says that he knew which characters were fodder very early on. One of the elements that made the first Alien film so scary was the death of Dallas, who, for all intents and purposes, seemed like the "main character". After his death, it really does feel like no one is safe, and in fact, in the original draft of the script, there were no survivors. Seems to me that if they wanted to really try and put the horror back in the franchise, they should've established the obvious Ripley stand-in, killed her off early, and then try to keep every death seem random or inescapable.

@Robynmarler1951 - You are so right. It was moments like that that made Aliens so much of a great film. Except for Frost and Apone, James Cameron developed and gave closure to nearly every character. What's crazy is that Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) was a last minute addition to the cast because Cameron and Hurd realized Sigorney Weaver was the only woman in the cast. Vasquez was an American Bodybuilder who happened to be living in Europe at the time and got recruited less than 48 hours before production began.

Just compare this to the actors in the first two- Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton, Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, and Paul Reiser. @MusicShaneCollins4 ай бұрын
@@MiloDCIt's important to recognise that much of the criticism towards Alien 3 stems from personal taste, particularly around its plot decisions. Yes, it was a controversial move to kill off beloved characters early on, and perhaps many would have preferred a different direction, like a spin-off on a prison planet without Ripley and her crew. However, that isn't the film we got. When you take Alien 3 for what it is, it’s an excellent film in its own right. The movie dives deep into a dark, dystopian world an isolated prison planet filled with morally bankrupt and undesirable characters. The film nails the bleak, oppressive atmosphere, and while it is undoubtedly a shock when compared to the more action-driven Aliens or the original's suspenseful horror, that difference in tone is intentional and effective. The prison environment and the nature of the inmates are accurately and deliberately crafted to be unsettling. It's a grim, harsh setting, which mirrors the darker themes of the film. And yes, while the CGI may not be top-notch by today's standards, that's been an issue across most of the Alien films, even Romulus has its flaws in that department (Rook) Ultimately, Alien 3 is a bold and unique entry in the franchise. It’s not designed to cater to everyone’s taste, but for those who appreciate the dark, nihilistic undertones, it stands out as a well-crafted film that portrays its world with an uncompromising vision. Your personal taste doesn't equate to the movies quality ;)

Even the main chick just hops into a space suit and it's like, oh... And the lack of fear, the Xenomorph is just chilling outside the room while they go over the plasma rifle. If this was in "Aliens", those Xenomorphs would have been ripping and tearing through anything and everything that they could to get the humans. They were busting through the air ducts to get the marines. Here it was just like; "Can you guys come out now"? And then the end, Merced's character is left ambiguous as if she's alive or dead. The hybrid has his tongue inside his mother. Is he injecting eggs into her like the Predialien did in "AVP:R"? What happened. We don't see what happens to her. Characters not that great, almost rooting for the aliens to kill everyone. 7. Knew the alien hybrid was coming with the pregnant girl, creature just didn’t work. 8. Final act was a little too much, definitely should have died and the recording made at the end.

1. yes, they could’ve explained the premise a little better… but perhaps W-Y was trying to sweep things under the rug, and knew it was on a collision course with the rings? 2. this may be from a video game, but I think there is established lore stating that a long xenomorph is able to produce a queen’s egg, or mutate into a queen itself, or something like that 🤷🏻♂️ 3. “Rook” was overused, and looked pretty bad… I thought he should’ve been David, from _Prometheus._ 4. yes… perhaps incubation takes less time for younger hosts, or in women, or perhaps the scientists had modified the facehuggers? 5. the ship crashed inside a hangar bay… didn’t they have some sort of momentum arresting device, for capturing cargo and such, or did I imagine that? maybe the hangar had a similar technology? 6. yes… it needed 10-20 minutes early in the movie fleshing out the characters and the layout I’d the station, etc. 7. the hybrid worked better than the hybrid in _Resurrection…_ they could’ve had Andy go full Ash in the final act and made him the final boss? 8. if Rain had died, saving the pregnant girl in the process, that might’ve worked 🤷🏻♂️ …I know the movie felt messy, but I got the feeling it had the potential to not be, if only it fleshed things out and let things breathe a bit more. I’m hoping for a director’s cut someday 🤷🏻♂️

Im sorry but ill take the beauty and originality of Prometheus and Covenant over this flat fan service. Fassbenders David is the best character in this franchise since James Camerons Ellen Ripley. Im saying Camerons Ripley because he really brought her to life. But the weight of the characters and acting of Rapaces Elizabeth Shaw or Waterstons Daniels makes those characters far more memorable than the flat acting and forgettable characters in Romulus. Even the side characters have more weight in the storytelling of Prometheus and Covenant. Solid performances all around.

Imagine if the pregnant Kay, not Rain, had unexpectedly turned out to be our "final girl," the way Ripley did in the original. Imagine if it was her standing over the last dead alien stowaway, and her wearing the Miraculous Medal around her neck earlier in the film had turned out to be a thematic hint of the triumph to come. "And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth"; "Our Lady has already crushed his head". That would have been a movie for all time. It's the kind of edifying victory that "A Quiet Place" did so well.

Meh…. it was “okay”. The film starts out strong and falls apart in the third act. I did like the casting, production design, the score etc….. the world building was great. I love that “alien world”. My problem is the story is a copy of something that was done better before. We already know the stages of face hugger to chest buster to xenomorph, but the film is happy to show us again (albeit not as well done). It just copies and repeats what was done in previous films in the series. It wasn’t scary at all…. honestly I was more bored than scared. I adore the franchise, I pick up on even the subtle music cues when they reference Alien and Prometheus. I would rather have Ridley Scott complete his Prometheus trilogy and see what David does next. The parts I liked the most is when they directly reference the original Alien and Prometheus…. with the exception of repeating the line “get away from her you bitch”. I’ll watch it again, and try to like it more.

One of the reasons why getting into the suit at the end of Alien is so important is because Ripley is now completely vulnerable. She thinks she's safe, she is taking off her clothes to get ready to go into cryo, and she's taking her time as she's coming down from a really horrible event. And then suddenly, the alien is THERE. She is terrified and has to "arm" herself at that point. It's about how she is able to pick herself up after being completely helpless and still survive. THAT is what makes it sexy. Even as a hetero woman, I saw it as sexy.

The only true horror of this film was the AI, which also could have been far scarier if done right. I did not feel a single second of fear during Romulus. I feel oodles of fear when watching the video game Alien Isolation in which inspired this very film the most. But if you feel no fear at all, especially for the Xeno's, in an Alien film it means that you are not emotionally invested. You don't care. They built these amazing sets, that is an Alien fans' wet dream! But it lacked atmosphere! When Bjorn said that the place gives him the creeps I say "Can you pass that creepiness on to me, please, because just hearing you say it doesn't make me feel it." Seeing a horde of facehuggers moving so fast, running, climbing & jumping is fantastic BUT all the kids should have been taken by them instantly in such a situation! The facehuggers kept missing them & therefor I feel no fear at all. Compare that to the facehugger scene in Aliens! Where we for the most part don't even see the creatures or just glimpses! Far, far scarier & also put our two lead actresses in mortal danger where, on the first viewing, there was no sure thing how they would get out initially. They also showed the adult Xeno's way too much. Where was the proper stalking? When even a decade old video game does this far better you're in trouble producing any fear factor. And Rain's little shooting range was so boring! She hit every damn Xeno no problem, & even had the pulse riffle helping her with the target = encouraging any moron to use a gun no problem. Again, comparing to Aliens; Ripley was standing right in the hive, in front of the Queen, with other Xeno warriors surrounding her, with far more limited ammo & no help aiming, whilst also protecting a child. Without tension there's no fear. Aliens is often accused of the Xeno's getting killed too easily etc. Then what the hell was going on in Romulus, then? In Aliens the Xeno's have lots of chances to kill & they do it. In Romulus the Xeno's often stood back close by for no reason, waiting for the script to tell it's OK to approach now. How am I supposed to fear for the characters if there's no proper & realistic threat?

It actually started off well on the Jackson's Star Colony and i wanted to see more of that world but as soon as it became a "Best of" Alien movies, it went downhill very fast. As always happens with these kinds of movies, it starts with some interesting ideas, which end up getting forgotten as the film turns into generic and predictable Alien-inspired space horror. The idea of Andy being potentially just as much of a threat as an ally was, in my opinion the most interesting idea in the film, and they really do nothing with it. The androids have had that dual nature since Ash in Alien, and they make that point obnoxiously clear in this movie. They didn’t have to go there, they could have done the entire android storyline in this film with Andy alone.

Alien Romulus is what people call a "spin-off." It's not intended to be episodic or drive the core narrative forward (like sequels do). It simply serves to elaborate on concepts from previous entries that people enjoyed and want more of. I think spin-offs are low risk, low reward, but ultimately a good thing for franchises to pace themselves. I think viewing the movie from this perspective really curbs people's expectations. It's just meant to be a chill/entertaining experience for Alien Fans. Although I will say the naming convention of movies before it is terrible, and partly to blame for the confusion among audiences: Alien = the original Aliens = the second one? Alien 3 = proper sequel name Alien Resurrection = reboot? sequel? spin-off? Prometheus = unrelated? Alien Covenant = spin-off? sequel to Alien Resurrection? I saw 0 trailers for Romulus and expected it to be the sequel of Alien Covenant.

I hated the effects on Ash, which looked cheap compared to the other effects. The humanoid alien at the end of the movie looked like it crawled from an Empire Pictures film (without EP charm). Agree with Chris Gore's appraisal. Very good point about the sped up gestation period. I would also point out that the soundtrack is largely a mix tape of musical cues from previous Alien films. IP mining has become more toxic than Weyland - Yutani mining.

All I can say is we need more Tia Carrerras (circa Waynes World) and Grace Parks being cast!

The opening scene in Alien: Romulus reminded me of what was always teased in Alien & Aliens which was that Weyland/Yutani always wanted the Xenomorph for their bio weapons division, not trying to upgrade Humanity, to simply make more money but from war which the 3rd Alien film should’ve always been about in the first place maybe with Ripley, Hicks, Bishop and maybe even a grown-up Newt trying to stop it once & for all. I know they sort of did that plot in Alien: Resurrection but it was poorly executed. If they went straight forward with the Weyland/Yutani Bio Weapons plot for the 3rd film it would have been better than A3 & A4 and it could have been a great cap off to the original trilogy and a great limited edition 4K Blu-ray boxset today

None of these movies will ever be scary anymore, cause we all know how the alien movies go to be fair. Maybe 45 years ago when it was the first, in that generation it was, but not to today’s standards. It wasn’t scary 10 years later either. That happens once. That’s why I think IPs should be left alone, for us that grew with those films it will never feel the same, specially when the current Hollywood generation is trying to appeal with those old IPs. I fairly liked it because the last 2 prequels just I just didn’t really liked.

@16:15 - To say this film, "Went off the rails." is an understatement.
