I use the Mackinaw hat when sailing in the cold of all things. The cap gives my eyes glare protection, the flaps save my ears for the cold wind and the string makes sure it stays on my head when the wind gusts. Really warm hat well worth the price.

Thanks for the reviews. After two weeks of working my A$$ off I received a pretty great payday. Thinking that Mackinaw Packer will be my gift to myself. Ive had a Tin Packer hat for years that I wear so much it has practically become a part of me. Been looking at the wool version for a while. I think it’s time to finally pull the trigger.

Bro, thanks heaps for the great Filson reviews! Me n you are wool brothers from different mothers! I live in BC now but I’m from New Zealand... what we don’t do to sheep can’t be done mate...except the explicit stuff....we leave that to the aussies! Ha! I’m guna get me a wool packer hat next week for trout fishing this season in the Chilcotin. Last year I either got sun burnt or snowed on! Chur bro, Tu meke.

For anyone watching now, note that the Filson Packer hat is now $115 USD. A $30 price increase in a little over a year is nuts… Pretty sure the rest of their hats got more expensive as well. Some of their other products might’ve gone up but I haven’t checked. Great channel by the way, love your reviews. Honest and to the point.

I have 2 of the Filson wool packer hats. I really like them. After watching Your videos, I thought that the Conner Bowler Hat was pretty neat looking. I ended up ordering one, I have to say, WOW! it's a great hat. I like how it looks, I like how it fits, its Soft & Warm, considering it's a Bowler/Derby hat. I'm really impressed by this hat. I ordered a satin liner from etsy and I put it in the hat and I think it looks great. Thanx for reviewing the Conner Bowler (Derby) Hat. I would not have known it existed had it not been for your review.

I did not like the polyester lining on Mackinaw hat either. It got wet real quick if I did some intensive work outside. My wife replaced it with 2 layers of merino wool. Works great! Great hat.

I have the Double Mackinaw hat. It makes my size 7 head look a bit funny (misshapen), but it's incredibly warm when it's bite-ass cold out, so who's complaining!?

Yeah it’s very unfortunate. Hopefully they get enough feed back to fix this problem in coming years. Personally I would pay extra to have it all natural materials

The polyester lining makes the hat a no go for me. They should have went with an all-shearling lining. Unfortunately for me, I'm between a large and an extra large for the wool packer. It worked well with a hat stretcher. However, I cannot get over that it feels...kinda cheap compared to other Filson products. The mackinaw wool ball cap is a home run though.

Yeah the polyester is unfortunate. I agree a full shearling lining would have been sweet! I’m glad you found something that works for you! The ball cap looks awesome I wanted to try it but I’m not a fan of nylon wool blends. I understand it’s supposed to be for strength but still. Also not sure it would suit me lol

I'm curious how waterproof the Filson Packer Hat is. I get the impression it's great for snow and winter weather, just wondering how dry it will keep your head. Also, how warm does it keep your head?

I've been buying Filson cloths for 30 years, great stuff. Thinking on getting the Mack hat, what hat size do you normaly wear, I'm 7 1/8 so thinking that's a medium.

That’s awesome to hear! I’m about a 7 1/8 I believe. I would recommend a large in that hat. Especially due to the fluff of the sheep skin when folded down. But I guess it would also depend how snug you like your hat to fit. Please update me on which one you choose to go with and how it ends up fitting you. Thanks

Thanks for an in-depth review of these hats! The website unfortunately doesn't show the inside and I don't have a Filson store nearby, but I'm considering the Mackinaw hat. Are you up in Alaska, by chance? My Uncle is from there and you have the same accent 😎

Glad to help! The mackinaw is a great choice I’m happy with mine except the lining which I will have replaced with wool soon. I’m not in Alaska unfortunately but I am up North. Would love to live in Alaska one day
