@@jemarcatubig3171 He didn't use his t-shirt to filter water, but to distill it. He used parts of his raft to make a fire, boiled seawater in a pot, put his shirt over the top, and let the steam wet it. Then he wrung it out into another pot. The steam that wets the shirt is pure water, leaving the salt behind.

Apparently that isn't the truth he lit a fire on his boat and then boiled the sea water in a pot. He used his t shirt to cover the pot and when it became moist due to all the steam he squeezed his t shirt for water. So in short he used desalination instead of filtration.

Not "suction", but gravity and osmosis. As the water drips off, the cloth reintroduces water into the longer end creating a water pressure that causes the fabric to release water. The MOST basic filter which can be done best with a thick cotton rope. Probably 1/2 gallon/hr...

Interesting idea but I wonder whether you've actually tried it? I think it would be easier to use the shirt to distill the water. We're told the boy broke off small parts of his raft to fuel a stove. He could put seawater in a pot, put his shirt over the top, and let the steam wet it. Then wring it out into another pot. The steam that wets the shirt would be pure water, leaving the salt behind.

this would be the last way of getting water but its actually alot of water. about half a glass per hour is still enough to live as long as you are not in a very hot place

A good way to prefilter water to save wear and tear on your filters if you have the time.

Absolutely not. If you'd drink sea water "filtered" this way, you would be dead within days from kidney failure and dehydration. The story about a teenager surving 49 days by drinking sea water "filtered" through a tee shirt is a dangerous misunderstanding. He had a supply of fresh water on his raft to start with, and when that ran out he collected rain water, which doesn't contain salt.

I suspect in theory if you did it 1000 times, but in all practicality no. You'd be better off pulling the infamous Bear Grylls stunts.

It's a nice science trick, but I've got a faster way using the same material. Place the t-shirt (without sweat) over the glass and push down in the middle to sag it and form a bowl shape. Pour the dirty water into this bowl shape and it will filter quickly. The tighter the weave of the fabric, the smaller the particles it filters out, but the slower it filters through. Simple, effective, quick.

The quicker, the poorer the quality, considering not only dirt, but microorganisms and microscopic parasites, that often make they way through a fast filtration, slower ones prevents this

may as well just put a piece of cloth over the top of a clean cup, then pour the water from the other cup in to it. Then boil it to kill germs. U can also make a really nice filter with wood coals, some sand and a few bits and pieces around ur house.

The point is that normally using it as a strainer will leave the water much dirtier. Because this is slow and going against gravity much of the residue that causes the color will stay behind. It's not the greatest method but the heavier stuff will stay behind. This should definitely be combined with other forms. If for instance you have water this dirty, it would be a good idea to run it through this before dumping it in your charcoal filter. The less large or heavy stuff you put in it, the longer your filter will last you. I would probably do at least a three step process for water this dirty including this, boiling, and then a charcoal filter. If i were getting water from a body it running steam i would dig a hole next to the body of water and pick up the mucky water there. While it'll have more minerals and dirt, it should have less or be less likely to have bacteria or parasites, then probably do this three step method after collecting the water.
