I am going to Iceland in September and I am so lucky to come across your video, it is the most informational thing...I generally never comment on videos but the way you explain everything so clearly, I had to thank you and recommend your videos to other viewers :) good luck there.

Just came back from a 6 days hike in Fimmvorduhals + Laugavegur with my four best friends. Best hike in my life so far. Just pay attention to the weather, Fimmvorduhals can be challenging in bad wheater.

Hello Marco! Do you think can i make this part (Fimmvorduhals) alone? I will start in Landmannalaugar. Thanks!

Just commenting to second this point. Did it recently (Sept 22) and honestly it's the closest I've come to real trouble while hiking. We had amazing weather the first 4 days along Laugavegur and that might be part of what lured us into a very false sense of security (dispite repeated memorials for people who died on the trails). That and the fact our bus booked back to Reykjavik did it's final run the next day so we made the absolute wrong decision to push on and at least get up the mountain that day so we'd make the bus. The hike up to Fimmvörðuháls was our first experience of the harsh Icelandic conditions and boy was it harsh. A drizzle down in Thorsmörk became a blizzard up on the mountain. Face hurting rain. Cold. Fog. Bad visibility not helped by markers that are tricky enough to follow in the best weather. Add that to arguably the most strenous upwards climbing of the week and it was definitely an experience I'm not willing to repeat. Another mistake led to us being one crossroads further west than the hut and in our cold, battered state we couldn't make a decision on which way to go. We threw up our tent to at least shelter from the elements and try to get a bit dry and warm but it was rough as hell and in the black ash up there the tent was in constant threat of blowing away. Luckily it did hold and gave us the time to regroup, dry off a bit and regain a fraction of warmth but it was genuinely scary for that whole time. (The thought of staying in that tent for any length of time nevermind overnight makes me feel a bit sick.) Not wanting to dig ourselves into further trouble we called as many huts and wardens offices as we could and after 5 or 6 calls got solid trustworthy info that the hut was not far and should at least have an emergency entrance round the back. Turns out we were 600m away from the hut but not being sure in our state we felt we could have been much further and even walking to it in gale force winds with 50m visibility was not a fun experience. Looking for it without good directions could have gotten us into real trouble. Luckily we made it, felt the biggest sense of relief in my life and by 10am the next day the weather had lifted enough to make the climb down to Skógar. The views even opened up. Worth it? No. Do not hike this in any sort of bad weather. It is not enjoyable, the best views will be obscured and it can be genuinely dangerous if you lose track of yourself. Be safe and nip this sort of situation in the bud by not hiking in uncertain weather to begin with. I certainly learned from my mistake. The money I thought I'd save by catching the bus I booked I would have gladly paid 20 times over while on top of that mountain.

If I wanted to hike part of this trail, starting at Skogafoss and then going back to Skogafoss same day, where do you recommend stopping and returning? At the bridge where part 2 starts?

Can this hike be done the last week of May (weather/snow permitting)? I know you recommend late June to September... Planning a trip for this year but going back and forth on the dates we go and would love to add this to the itinerary! Or do you have a good hike that can be done in May that you recommend?

Is wild camping allowed along the trail?
@DerKatzeSonne3 жыл бұрын
No. Just like it isn't allowed on the Laugavegur trail (and I believe in Iceland completely?). But you can camp at one of the huts (the lower one, closer to skogar; you don't want to camp at the Fimmvorduhals hut as it's not allowed for good reasons - very exposed to storm etc.), AFAIK. Please check if this is still true, before attempting it. It's just some info I read online recently.
