How much debt did we pay off in December? Progress isn't always easy, but we are going in the right direction. Finally adding in my Student Loan and Mortgage... the numbers are scary!!

I’ve noticed a pattern, that when the other spouse isn’t involved in the finances, they are more likely to make not so smart purchases.

Definitely look to see if you can refinance. The difference between unsubsidized vs subsidized was when the interest started (while in college vs 6 months after graduating). I know many of my friends have just refinanced through SOFI for a smaller interest rate. It’s definitely worth looking into so you can get more to that principal! Even if it is only .5-1% lower than what you pay now that is that much more you can put to it or use elsewhere in your budget

I refinanced mine in 2020. Just before I was diagnosed with cancer. So lucky I did then and got a really low fixed rate. Made a huge difference getting paid off. Almost done now rather than another 20 years.

What is wrong with the car? Considering it still have a loan on it, I would consider investing a couple thousand in getting it fixed. Congrats on paying off the John Deere.

I’m so impressed with all the progress you have made while still living your life you inspire me 😊 I don’t if you remember I had to empty all of my sinking funds and envelopes in July to pay for my husband’s surgery. I have my emergency fund built up to $1700 now so I’m going to start tackling the debt again. Thanks for your encouragement it has definitely helped keep me on track.

Also if you do need to get a new car and you don’t plan on having it for more than 5 years again, don’t get into the habit of having a payment plan that’s over that 5 years. To be honest it should last longer than that so put it off as long as you can!

You should check if you qualify for public service loan forgiveness on the student loans. Since you’re a teacher I believe you would! My mom took out a huge parent plus loan for me and we just had it forgiven (after 10 years of payments, but still anything is nice!)

Yay Mrs P! You guys made some serious progress in your debt this year. You should definitely feel so proud of those numbers and all the work you put in. I’m so glad you started a channel, it’s been lovely following your journey! 🥰 I think focusing on the wedding is great. You are such a good place from the beginning of the year you’ll be saving and paying debt like a rockstar. Super awesome and inspiring video! 💜🎊💜

Mrs P car prices are stupid right now and interest rates are too ! Keep paying that debt and delay till at least till after the wedding ! Keep that car chugging !!!! ❤

That would be my suggestion as well. At least wait until after the wedding. 9 years isn't really that old for a car. Does Mr. P feel like you suddenly have more money now that the John Deere loan is paid off? I understand that money burning in the pocket feeling. But as you stated, it is best to keep on saving for wedding and paying off debt. New car can be a 2026 goal.

Please follow this excellent advice - you are doing so well and a huge car payment (at this point, they’re all huge) will demoralize and sabotage you!

Very very good video. I pay my escrow every 6 months. And don't include in mortgage due to the exact reason of it fluctuating. I was a single mom and could afford to have a negative escrow. So I refianced and pay escrow (aka .property taxes) separate. I know how much every 6 months to save. Less stress on my tight budget.

Please look at a new vehicle bc the interest rates are astronomical for used cars. You may even get less than 2% on new.

Is it possible to refinance a student loan for a better interest? Would that be a possibility after you've paid off the consumer debt? (I am not familiar with American student loans)

I would try to save a few hundred a month. You need a reliable car in the country, maybe in time you’ll help your daughter with a car, you may want to go on a non wedding vacation, etc

I hope your car isn’t a total loss…. Can you sell it for how much it’s worth?
