Definitely a true engine builder. Camshaft goes in FIRST!! On a babbitt bearing engine, putting the cam in first allows you to support it on both sides so as you slide it in, so you don’t knick the bearings. Finally…

Hay Pete, This could be a real dumb question, but here goes would the roller cam bearings be looked at as a fix for the LS1 over feeding the cam bearings oil & staving Mains & big ends ? Or is there something I'm over looking as I want to build a real nice LS1 5.7L for my Holden Calais so I can keep it looking stock just with a little more bite. Asking this as every LS1 I've killed has been bottom end staving of oil because of cam over feeding after pulling it down. I'm one of your New Zealand viewers.

Another question: During the high speed camera portion, at 15:12, it looks like you are putting oversized header flanges on the exhaust side of the head. Are those port matched to the head? I've discovered that if the primary is larger than the exhaust port, & you leave it unported, there's a sharp edge between the manifold & head, which acts like a cheap anti reversion header... Example: If you have a 2" exhaust port, I'd use a 2 3/8" primary at the head, and don't flow them... The sharp edge all the way around the exhaust port/header flange, act as a D chamber, but better... With less work.... But I don't have a dyno to confirm, what my lying eyes are telling me... Have you experimented with that? I'm all about scavenging... If I can get a exhaust pulse reverb, to not re enter the cylinder, during overlap... I'm golden... Having the sharp edge on the head/ header flange, prevents much of the harmonic reverb from being able to reenter the cylinder during intake fill.. This seems to be effective at all RPM ranges, and negates the necessity for a tuned exhaust... You just want it to get away from the engine as fast & easy as possible. Back pressure is not your friend. I know this goes against much 'common wisdom'... but physics don't care about your leaned wisdom...

Question: Needle bearings on the cam journals... So you block the oil passages... I get that, cause you'd never build oil pressure in the engine if you didn't... But do those bearings get enough oil, just from the slosh? Would they work in a dry sump situation? How about the pressure exerted on the needle roller points? I suppose that would depend on the lifter spring pressure at max lift? Would that not change as RPM changes? Sorry for all the questions... But I'm working through getting the whole needle bearing deal, as that's how all 2 stroke cranks are done... No oil pressure, but caged roller bearings, which have a higher pressure on the race than even a little needle bearing.
@atheplummer3 ай бұрын
I've heard that pro's to long rods are mid range power, but negligible difference at higher rpm. which makes no sense to me. But if so, is it really worth all the extra stuff you have to do to make a long rod engine work, with all the wrist pin buttons? To my mind, and engine building experience, long rods give you 2 advantages... Less rod deflection on the crank swing, & longer 'hang time' for the piston to remain at zero piston speed, which allows for more timing adjustments. Which will allow for more/better cam LSA tuning, if you aren't stupid enough to get a wide cam lobe. Or am I missing something?

Awesome content! How are the thrust loads managed when you go to the roller bearings on the cams? Do you need to add a torrington bearing or similar? I'm not familiar with LS engines, but if they run a babbit style bearing for thrust fed oil by the cam bearing similar to a crank, I would expect you'd change that too.

Sorry Pete but I’m just not a fan of those needle cam roller bearings. Actually I’m not a fan of ANY needle roller bearings in an engine be they can journals or roller rockers. They are fine until one fails and spills its guts. Then those needle bearings get pumped through the entire engine destroying everything. No thanks.

Pete, I have a question that possibly you could give your opinion of it and that is what do you think about the idea of rounding the ends of crankshafts counterweights and webs polished them to help the shed oil and or reduce parasitic power loss. I ask because years ago I purchased a short block from a Comp racer/engine builder and the Crankshaft counterweight and webs were rounded and nearly mirror polished. Additionally ever surface on the inside of the block was deburred, and polished. I understand the deburing and doing some clean up inside and outside of the wbecause I don’t like to cut my hands/fingers for no good reason and of course because the books I bought back in high school about engine building said to do it as well as washing the block with tide and hot water before assembling it.

Another question: I observed that you lined up the dots on the cam sprockets... My experience is, when I do that, then drop the distributor in... It's always 180 out of time... I recently discovered that both dots are supposed to be at the highest point, for it to be in time at TDC #1... this happened to me, because I didn't know one way or the other, that I'd line the dots up between the crank & cam... then once the engine was assembled, I'd just go ahead and point the rotor bug at #8 on the distributor, because I just KNEW, when I tried to fire it, it'd be 180 out of time...
