What a great bit of kit. I bought a big old 3phase grinder on a similar stand (A bit bigger) in an auction. There were two things I wanted in that one lot, the stand and an unused creasing hardy tool that looks unused for an anvil. I later sold the grinder off and have kept the stand obviously. On the look out now for a Ranalah or similar brand looking for restoration, though I may end up having to make my own English Wheel.

Hi Dom, The Mini Ranalah looks great, my only concern would be that lower m12 threaded rod to adjust the bottom wheel, I'm not sure this will hold up over time, it just looked like any regular zinc plated threaded rod you can buy from a builders merchant, these are not very hard and being a standard thread pitch are not designed for constant adjusting use, I think you would be better off using a proper hardened machine leadscrew the sort of thing you can buy off the shelf from HPC Gears.

You could make a stand of hot rolled angle steel. A bit like the Eifel tower.. and maybe ad Big rivets to keep it in style.. or use your plasma cutter and make a chape like that and weld it (from the inside.) Trying to keep it cost effective.

Hi Dom, the stand you used looks really great. I guess you need to make your own from here on, that will give you chance to eliminate the adaptor plate. With the stand the whole thing starts to look quite big again and ups the cost. Might be worth costing out a fabricated version. Mind you I would love to see the whole design, pattern making and casting exercise all over again!! I wish you luck and look forward to seeing the testing All the best!!

This is an example of what is best about British engineering: an ingenuity: one man and his Dom. But the problem is that once the enthusiastic creators are no longer with us the excellence of British engineering is no longer with us. I think of British hifi as an example, when UK companies such as _the Acoustical Manufacturing Company_ produced world beating kit such as the Quad 405 (I have several), but once the enthusiast has shuffled off this mortal coil the quality product has too. Our nation needs to create an environment where our skills and enthusiasms can be passed on. Why has our country never managed to succeed with passing on skills?

Hi Dom, excellent work as expected. The stand looks fantastic, except. I think it needs to extend further out under the Ranalah so that it looks aesthetically stable. Clearly, if it's bolted to the floor all will be fine, but as it is, it just looks a little unbalanced (if you get my drift).

My only thought: Is the base you are using wide enough at the bottom or heavy enough to keep the tool from tipping over when the wheel is in use? Are the lateral forces generated when working a piece of metal apt to cause it to tip? Another great video!

Another excellent video Dom and Uncle Jon. That base definitely has the right look, but the transition to the half Ranalah looks “uncomfortable”. I’m not sure that I can offer any sensible solution to this as yet. It needs a little bit more thought to achieve a more “integrated by design” feel, worthy of all the other top class work done.

The cast stand looks pretty for sure. I wonder though if, given your thinking here is to make something suitable for a smaller workshop / garage, something that keeps the weight down might be better. Someone with a smaller space may benefit from being able to move the machine a little more easily. (Perhaps inspired by the fact I’m wondering if I could fit one in my garage!)

@@DominicChineas ah, good point. My line of thinking was for a space limited workshop/garage allowing a bit more manoeuvrability might be a bonus. If that was a possibility. Great update as usual Dominic, but since you asked for comments…😂…why use WD39.5 when your favourite supplier, Würth, do proper cutting and tapping lubricants? Why use a metric thread n a project you are at pains to keep period-correct? Why not start your taps perfectly plumb in the same set-up you use to drill the hole on your drill stand? Minor details, I’m enjoying the project.
@DominicChineas
@DominicChineas 6 ай бұрын
Wow lots of questions! I just used whatever cutting oil I had on hand, no bias for brands at all, there is also nothing wrong with the wd40 cutting oil, it’s really good actually I explained in a previous video the reason for going metric is cost, the big machines are all as they should be but this is new, metric bearings etc are all a lot cheaper I did start the tap on the mill it just didn’t make the video
