I'm Russian, and I can explain the word. It's интрига, "intriga", pronounced kinda like "in-tree-gah". It's basically "intrigue", when used as a noun. Here it's more likely to mean "something mysterious" rather than "a secret plot or scheme", but who knows what the game creators meant. Anyway, it's hilarious to see a random Russian word in all caps all over the screen.Thank you for your excellent videos, I love them!

The strange word is written in cyrillic and "ИНТРИГА" means intrigue. You pronounce it as you read it,provided you known any of the cyrillic languages. Great episode and I cant wait for the next one.

adding the extra sound board is not free, you will need a lot more CPU cycles to drive the extra sound channels, and RAM to hold the extra music. This game is on the limits performance wise and adding more sound would hurt the FPS.
@loganjorgensen2 жыл бұрын
Wow I didn't think the PC-88 could do something like this. It's reminds me of early DOS scrolling which was less smooth but very functional, guessing it likely uses Adaptive Tile Refresh much like iD software's early side scrolling games like Commander Keen. Looks fun and you normally don't get that much story in a shooter.

I've been on a tear through the PC-88 Paradise playlist latest, but most of the other games on it just seem too opaque for those of us who can't read Japanese. Well, I just gave this one a go and can now say I've finished my first PC-88 game. Thanks!

Yet another superb video! Damn, the music sounds great, but I agree-SoundBoard II support probably would have elevated the already solid soundtrack to greater heights. I eagerly await the next video...
@Wyrdwad7 жыл бұрын
My only familiarity with the Soundboard II is The Scheme, but... yeah, that's enough to make me a fan! That would be a cool game to review, too, as most people just know it as "that platformer with the great Yuzo Koshiro music and the hero who looks exactly like Adol." But it genuinely is a really good Metroidvania, especially for 1987, and I had a very good time playing through it! And that soundtrack is just... so delicious. ;) ...Oh, also, good to see another PC-88 video! I really enjoy these, and am always happy to see a new one pop up on my KZbin subscriptions list.
@Wyrdwad7 жыл бұрын
Ah, I had no idea it was an expensive title -- but I suppose I'm not surprised. I don't own a PC-88, but my MSX collection certainly hasn't come cheap. I'm sure it's a very similar story with the PC-88 library. I played my copy of The Scheme on my Windows PC via a CD called "All About Bothtec" that came as a free bonus gift with the copy of Dragon Slayer Chronicle I bought several years ago -- and apparently, I lucked out, as those All About Bothtec discs are supposedly fairly rare too, having only been thrown in with the very first batch of Dragon Slayer Chronicle boxes that were shipped out.
@Wyrdwad7 жыл бұрын
Oh, of course. I don't even own a PC-88, and I'd totally buy a copy of The Scheme if I saw it in the wild for a decent price, just to have it in my collection! (Though I'd defer to actual PC-88 owners first, as I prefer to see collectible games get some actual use rather than just sit on shelves forever.)

Do you have a list of pc-88 or 98 games that used cd audio music?
@marktheshark2747 жыл бұрын
It's nice to see a PC-88 game with somewhat smooth scrolling. If there's one thing that I don't like about many PC-88 games is that the scrolling is often very choppy. I might be a bit spoiled by games that scroll smoothly, but choppy scrolling still feels very jarring to me. Also, a bit of an unrelated question, but do you have Valis I and/or II on the PC-88? If so, do you have any plans to talk about them in a future episode of PC-88 Paradise?

I've noticed some '80s-'90s Japanese game designers displaying a certain fascination with the Russian language and soviet culture. Some of the plot beats in Konami's SNATCHER, Sega's widely distributed Tetris implementation, and the multiple(???) puzzle games starring a mascot version of Gorbachev come to mind. I get the impression relations between the two countries must have warmed a fair deal in the Perestroika period.
