My nail in the coffin on this for me (relative to something like DaVinci Resolve) is the External SSD editing, 1. I hate any artificial limitations that may be attempting to influence me to have to cough up more cash for a larger internal SSD and 2. if I can't easily switch between the Mac and the iPad for projects, it kind-of defeats their intent to position the iPad as a "supplemental" editing machine when you're away from your Mac. I mean Apple clearly doesn't want the iPad to be your main editing rig, but if you're going to force me to use a more limited version of a program that offers little benefit over its full-version MacOS counterpart, don't build in limitations that prevent me from hopping between machines.

Early days; that could all change in 6-12 months; this is version 1. So, judging now is fair enough but do not write it off. DeX sucked on Day 1, as do most software; time will tell. As for not transferring the project from the Mac to the iPad, that seems logical, as the iPad does not support a host of Mac features this early in development. It would cause issues and an inability to correct stuff the iPad version does not support. Seems like a solid first go. Obviously only a complimentary app for prosumers, but it may become more with time. It will be great for casual users, but there are currently better more polished alternatives.

agreed, but if there’s one take-away that’s repeated on these tech channels quiet often, it’s the cautionary lessons-learned from investing in products for features that you hope they improve on/add in the future. Apple’s will add what they add over time in a very cautionary and curtailed Apple way - Give you just enough, but not enough at the same time.

You want a more premium desktop experience to match the fantastic new iPad hardware? the device that houses the same SoC as the MacBooks? Best we can do is “reinvent” 3 separate ways to multitask apps and a limited/often buggy “stage manager”, but hey, at least you’re not limited to black bars and mirror-mode on external displays anymore.

I have a maxed-out 12.9in M2 iPad Pro and I want it to be my computer so bad, but Apple underwhelms me on the software at every single turn - I end up doing real work on my 2017 13in MacBook Pro, because iPadOS just takes so many more clicks, swipes and gestures to get anything done. What should be a simple point and click ends up being a +5-10 step workaround because of the UI and other limitations.

“iMovie on steroids.” Perfect description! I sure hope: 1) Apple drops the price, 2) they add more features in not-too-far-off updates, or at worst 3) they make it much easier to import and export on iPad so you can switch between it and your Mac much easier and get the convenience of the iPad with the extra features of the Mac when you need them.

It seems like Logic Pro of iPad OS has a lot more the Logic Pro for Mac OS feature / functionality than Final Cut Pro. I can readily move Logic Pro projects back forth between my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. In theory, Logic Pro for iPad can import Garage Band iOS files, and this did work for the files I had created, but not for the demo tracks provided by Apple. But I was able to import the Apple Demo files into Logic Pro for Mac OS, save them as Logic Pro projects and then load them in Logic Pro for iPad with no issues. Similarly, the Mac OS version demo files, can be loaded into to the iPad OS version, provided they are saved as fully consolidated Logic Pro projects (i.e. includes all the Apple loops, samples, instruments etc required by the project which can make for large files, but I have a 2 TB iPad Pro, so no issues with storage capacity!). Both versions of Logic Pro also share the same complete sound libraries, instruments, and plugins. In fact, Logic Pro for iPad initially came with a couple of extra plugins, but these were later added to the Mac OS versions via a software update. There is slightly less fine control of Instrument settings on the iPad version due to UI differences (touch version needs larger controls Vs mouse to operate), but any fine tuning made via the Mac OS version are preserved when you transfer the project back to iPad and vice versus. Mac OS version can readily use third party plugins and instruments which can then limit your ability to share projects with the iPad OS version, but this could change if the plugins become available via the iPad OS App store. The iPad version does offer improved control surface options by virtual of the touch screen ... keyboard, pads, chord bars etc, whereas I would plug in a Midi control surface, e.g. Novation Pad Pro, into MacBook Pro to get similar functionality.

Really good test! Certainly FCP is lacking on a few things. However, for my workflow, the iPad with FCP is more than enough where I replaced my late 2019 MacBook Pro 16in and I am more than happy with what I’ve got with FCP. Now, with it being subscription based, I suspect AND expect  to upgrade FCP with the iPad over time and I’m more than willing to be patient for it. Updating it to be able to multitask and edit directly off of an SSB would be my first request. That and additional plug-ins. So we shall see!

From what I've seen most of Logic is intact on the iPad, but FC for iPad has a lot of limitations and missing features. I bet the Bean counters at Apple are saying business is down we need to release these two now to get some more monthly subscription money. Sadly in all the computer industry the Bean counters tend to drive release schedules more than engineering.

I personally do not believe apps such as Final Cut Pro are made for iPads. iPads have their advantages, Laptops have theirs. People want their cake and eat it too and this is what we get. You want a device for pro level editing buy a pro level laptop. Different functionalities are what sets them apart and makes them individually unique. Why are we wanting tablets to behave like pro laptops? It's a bit counter intuitive if you ask me. Ultimately people asked for it and this is what they got. Deal with it. Apple would be silly to make a tablet that is on par with their pro MacBooks in every way. It's stupid when you think of it.

So much limitations, when there's Davinci Resolve, Lumafusion or Capcut (to be used for free), is unacceptable. There's a thin margin between not wanting to canibalize FCP on a Mac and betting on the stupidity of your users. With a subscription model, to boot...

Did the iPad heat up while it was doing this? Frankly, I cannot understand why anyone would want to edit video on a tablet. One needs to be able to access external drives, one needs to be able to import large quantities o material (1GB is too small). Of course I don’t know anything about video editing. I appreciate the video but disagree with the conclusion. We all talked about and appreciated how Apple didn't just port the macOS Final Cut Pro over to the iPad but tried to optimize every UI element a little better for the touchscreen. This is obviously going to make for fewer features for the initial launch. Now we have to wait for all of the missing features as they figure out where to put everything.

So, it looks like they have deliberately limited Final Cut on the iPad. I genuinely can't understand why. Generally, Apple do this sort of thing to not cannibalise sales of other products. But just because the iPad does FCP, it doesn't mean people will stop buying Macs, especially as the percentage of Mac/iPad buyers who actually need FCP is pretty small. If it is not some sort of hardware limitation then the Machiavellian scheming being done here by Apple is way over my head.

I’d be curious of a head-to-head M1 iPad FCP vs M2 iPad FCP. Who wins? It’s interesting the difference in assumptions. Your assumption seems to be that Apple Marketing hamstrung (hamstrings?) FCP from having full features. In contrast, my assumption is that Apple FCP team bit the bullet and released ‘early’ because FCP for iPad was running late and they just needed to make it real… even if many features were missing. This assumption parallels the FCP X release transition where oodles of features were missing. The Editing off SSD feature could definitely use some TLC ASAP, so I guess we’ll see whether that’s permanent hamstring (Apple Marketing) or whether the FCP team gets Editing off SSD feature in FCP for iPad sooner than later. I do hope FCP team (in due time) brings FCP for iPad to parity with FCP for MacOS.

Well... of course, let's compare a full desktop version (with many, many versions later) to a new app iPad version 1.0... And funny, no mention about the price of FCP on the mac is a lot compared to 5$/month (that you can stop anytime). Especially, both apps are not for the same crowd... The workflow is different... And It's annoying to see reviewers trying to do the same thing from the mac on the iPad, this is not the way the iPad app was planned. Even an iPad Final Cut vs Luma Fusion wouldn't be fully fair since Luma is there for a while... And let's remember when Luma started, it was missing a lot. This version 1.0 iPad App is just the start for sure. This is a complete redesign and will only get better... And I feel with iPad OS 17, the app will only get better!

Yes, you must apply common sense rather than join the bandwagon that is always taking an opportunity to smack Apple down. It is version 1 and should be treated as a far-from-finished project. I am sure FCP on the Mac compared terribly to the current FCP! A sign of the times, where people always want to whine and have no patience or sensibility. Good start, Apple, and we will judge it more critically in a year or so when there has been time for updates.

Just go for the Design Resolve, its soo much better with it doing desktop level editing, Final Cut Pro is just a scam from apple.

Put it this way, ipads make macbooks ashamed in terms of performance, apple is really stepping up their game here, samsung cant do that they cant put in a intel chip into phones, neither apple can put the m2 chip into iphones
