This news right out of the blue is stunning in itself. I hope you'll find FCP useful. Certainly, it's interesting just to contemplate the efficacy of the new controls you have to use with this iPad version. I don't like subscription models; I've always liked just a one-rime charge. I left Microsoft Office behind for LibreOffice, for instance. Anyway...this may inspire me to actually USE the lovely cameras on my iPhone 6S and 13 Mini for something besides my stills and time-lapse videos JUST so I have an excuse to try the free trial of this software...

Respectfully, I disagree with the one-time payment vs subscription argument. Yes many of us are tired and "fee-ed" to death in 2023. It appears the subscription model is the default or go-to option, but there are other possibilities out there. You said that this gives people the opportunity to use the software for a small monthly or yearly cost. DaVinci Resolve gives people the opportunity to use the full suite for editing, color grading, audio mixing, VFX, and exporting for free. However, you have to deal with watermarks in the final export, unless you pay for the full suite (currently USD $295). You still get to use most of the suite for free, learning how to use the software. Resolve for iPad gives you many of the same features as the desktop counterpart for free. Not too long ago, people were saying that iMovie & Garage Band were supposed to be for those wanting to get their feet wet with post-production on a Mac, and then upgrade to the "Pro" apps when you're ready. Some people brush off a "professional" renting (or as I think of it "leasing") there equipment and software. I think everyone's situation is unique and needs to be taken into account. In my case, I OWN Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and the full DaVinci Resolve Suite. Not too long ago I had to go into the hospital and it took me a while to get back to work. I can't say with any certainty I would have been able to afford a monthly subscription (like a certain creative cloud) and my health care. By owning my software I was able to get back to work quickly and without issues. Additionally, I worked in maintenance when I was younger and it was mixed. The most common tools, every mechanic owns - wrenches/drivers/sockets, hammers, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc, are in every toolbox, but more specified tools, tools not needed for everyday maintenance work are rented as needed. To an editor, Final Cut Pro is an every day tool; to an audio engineer, Logic Pro is an every day tool, even if you have a scaled back iPad version you are using on location - which is a part of the marketing on the webpage ("Bring your entire studio to your shoot.") If Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad been $50-$100 USD each, then I would be willing to buy them but as it stands I'm planning on it.

Yup, I think that trial will help a lot of people figure out if these apps are worth it. It’s just a shame that so many people leap to the default bone of contention about any new software release these days (i.e. that it is, inevitably, subscription based).

FabFilter has had their AU plugins on iOS for more than 4 years now. If you’ve never delved into the world of iPad/iPhone audio apps and plugins there are actually tons of them available from all sorts of 3rd party developers - dozens of DAWs and hundreds of instruments/effects. Hopefully the arrival of Logic Pro will encourage even more to port their plugins over. The AUv3 plugin format is cross compatible between iOS/macOS.

I understand the want to have software like Resolve and FCPX on iPad and to be able to create big videos etc. But from the wider perspective of consumer, more people are most likely to have ipads than laptops, and with the barrier of entry to making videos now such as short-form video on TikTok and youtube so low now, it would make sense for these iPad editing software to have a good amount of focus on small budget videos such as short-form. Being able to shoot cool videos on your phone and iPad, and then to go and edit on your iPad too. This is insanely good for people to just go out and make cool stuff. Of course, being able to shoot high-quality videos from your camera and edit them on the iPad would be cool but at that point, you already have the ability to edit on a laptop. Also, I doubt they'd make something that allows users to ditch their MacBooks for an iPad, apple wants you to have both.

They KILLED It! "Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad will each be available on the App Store for $4.99 (US) per month or $49 (US) per year with a one-month free trial". $50 a year! No Way!!!! I just canceled my Adobe subscription because I was tired of paying over $60 a month for software I only used for one client. All the others, I use FCP or Resolve Studio both of which I have paid $300, ONCE. I will stick for travel FCP using my trusty MacBook Air M1 which I already own. Even though I have a iPad Pro M2, I can always use Resolve on it as it was a free download. Hope it stays that way.

Logic Pro ipad sounds like a great move. Casual music production seems destined to shift away from the full on daw and as we've seen with MPC and N.I's One/ live/ mk3/ +, ppl are looking to untether from the ball and chain of their desktops. Presonus Studio One owner Fender are keen to work on a solution to simplify their daw too, and I'm betting that their solution will be in tablet/ mobile form too. Designing streamlined, intuitive UI's allows more focus on hands-on musical creativity and expression, simplifying or cutting out some technical complexities. Even for more "in the can" producers, the ipad app could potentially be a welcome counterpart. Its not a necessity for me, but it does pique my interest, so who knows, maybe I'll end up buying into it once in a while. However, I pride myself in how ridiculously little I've spent on what I find to be an epic setup, so that restrains my trigger finger. Not even finger pilates helps. To be clear, tight finger, not tight a**

I think the price per month makes it more accessible, question I have is more about Logic Pro can you open a video in it whilst you build a music score I can’t seem to do this on GarageBand on my iPad which is why I don’t use it solely for video editing. I can use LumaFusion which is fine for doing the video but adding a music score at the right length I.e composing it to the video isn’t yet workable for me on the iPad ? Could be user error on my behalf. Final Cut won’t work for me as I have the earlier iPad Pro before M1 but logic will work according to their site

You will own nothing and be rather happy. -Subscription team at Apple. I use FCP because it's not Adobe monthly nonsense. Well, used to. I certainly hope this doesn't infect the desktop. Subscription services are a barrier to Exit. And that's worse than being gatekept by a large price up front.
@MarkEllisReviews
@MarkEllisReviews Жыл бұрын
You are very rarely tied into subscriptions like this, therefore suggesting they are a “barrier to exit” is entirely inaccurate.
@POVwithRC
@POVwithRC Жыл бұрын
@@MarkEllisReviews No. It's Adobe's entire existence "Hook em into the cloud and train them on the product, they will never stop paying or leave." It's also iCloud storage's profit motive. Good luck getting out of paying for that once you load it up. Being tied in IS the idea. Subscriptions are more often than not a barrier to exit because the service subscribed to inserts itself firmly and dominantly into a workflow such that the user cannot or will not seek an alternative and pay indefinitely. I'm not wrong. You are.
@MarkEllisReviews
@MarkEllisReviews Жыл бұрын
@@POVwithRC if it works itself ‘firmly and dominantly into a workflow’ and benefits the user, happy days - it’s a solid investment in productivity and profitability. If it does that and _doesn’t_ benefit the user, the user can usually cancel within 30 days’ notice. Unless said user likes wasting their time. You’re way off on this one I’m afraid.
@POVwithRC
@POVwithRC Жыл бұрын
@@MarkEllisReviews Nope. It's a recurring revenue trap. It's inappropriate and it is fundamentally trapping users into a system. Think of it this way, if a year or two down the road the fee doubles or triples, or the product bifurcates with some previous baseline features further paywalled, the user loses. They have to give up, retrain on another system, or agree to pay more to avoid that friction. There is no world where subscription services benefit creatives, and only a world where they get less control. The only reason we have them is because it benefits the shareholder, not the end user.
@MarkEllisReviews
@MarkEllisReviews Жыл бұрын
@@POVwithRC I refer to my previous point. It’s a ‘trap’ of your own making if you’re incapable of identifying a tool that is costing you more than it is benefitting you. Quite. You could also use a Mac Mini with a big screen. A Mac also gives you proper storage networking, the ability to frequently back up as you work - to different drives/locations too. With the apps I use I can usually do a Cmd-Z to undo mistakes - can iPads do this? I'm not impressed by touch interfaces for everything, I prefer a mouse with buttons which I find precise and minimises errors by accidental actions. But I suppose there is some value in a single device solution, although Apple would need to create better built in iPad camera/microphone options for that to work well.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with you on the subject of "subscriptions for software". Currently, almost every fart app in the App Store requires a subscription, even simple text editors, to-do lists, etc. This is a trend that I find terrible and I will strongly oppose. Apps with a subscription model are basically a no-go for me. The statement that subscriptions guarantee easy access is fundamentally wrong. Rather, they lead to an extreme dependency that almost inevitably binds a user to the app. A good example of this is Adobe's unspeakable CC subscription trap. Although extremely expensive over the course of a year, a later cancellation means that all apps, all fonts, all templates created with Photoshop or the other apps are worthless. All the work was for the bin, unless you renew the subscription. I am willing to buy productive software for a reasonable price. I bought Logic Pro, Final Cut and Motion for the Mac and have been getting regular updates ever since. If these apps went into a subscription model, that would be the end for me and I would look for an alternative, just as I switched from Adobe to Affinity Suite and have never regretted it. Subscription models are the worst plague Apple has come up with for the App Store. I always hope that as few users as possible join in.
@MarkEllisReviews
@MarkEllisReviews Жыл бұрын
I completely respect your point of view with this, Thomas, but subscription is how it’s going to be, here on, so you’re either going to have to accept it and come along or watch your pro tools gradually dwindle. There are arguments for both sides of this and none of them are ‘fundamentally wrong’ - I’m afraid I have to disagree with you there.
@SFAutor
@SFAutor Жыл бұрын
@@MarkEllisReviews Thank you for your answer, Mark. I understand your point, respect it, and speak only for myself. Of course, everyone can decide whether subscriptions are a good or bad idea, but I recall that software development in earlier days managed without this plague. If the developers no longer feel able to finance their work and therefore have to milk the user, then either there is something wrong with the whole business concept in the app store, or they simply want to maximise profit. In return, we get unfinished apps that only get better in the course of the subscription. You're absolutely right, my pro apps may indeed dwindle over time, but I'm confident I'll find a replacement to work with. There's no way I'm going to end up with a confusing zoo of subscriptions that I lose track of. I'll just limit myself to a few apps, or use open source solutions. If subscriptions are the future, as you say, then I'll look for other solutions and I'm sure I'll find them.

Great video as always! My guess as to the focus on short form content creation is just because of the relatively limited storage options on iPad, be it on board or external. So to sum up - You need a new machine if you don't have an M1 iPad - which costs as much as a laptop that can run FULL FINAL CUT PRO (without a SUB) - you then need to continually pay for it and HOPE your new machine will continue to support it with each year that goes by - a MBP Pro will support FCP FOR YEARS AND YEARS without a SUB!! (yet ....I guess - next you will tell us how exited you are for that!) - you need to buy all new plugins - and learn essentially a new interface - and you cant round trip projects with FINAL CUT - so really - THIS IS NOT FINAL CUT!!! ITs a whole new app! that devs will need to support to even make it good and you will have to BUY all those plugins! Sorry no thanks.

Cool story, bro. It _literally_ is Final Cut Pro, by the way.

@@MarkEllisReviews it may But If I Can't open up a .FCP library in it - OR - I if I cant use a Noise Factory Plugin (not updated) - then its LITERALLY NOT Final Cut Pro - Its Final Cut Pro - which is a completely different APP. It might as well be lumafusion - or Davinici for iPad - I CAN NOT OPEN a project created in Final Cut Pro - because that is a DIFFERENT APP.

@@PiecesofVinyl I’d just chill out about it, mate. It is Final Cut Pro, though.

You lost me on the defense of the subscription model. All that is fine and good, *IF* there were also an option to buy it outright. Too many $5 here and $5 there subscriptions. Enough is enough. I already pay $40 a month to Apple for a bunch of other services, not counting all of the streaming services, Amazon, Microsoft 365 ... enough. Time to cut back. Not one more new subscription. This is the same reason I refuse to use Adobe as they have no way to just pay a fee and move forward. This product is a non-starter for me. In fact, it's probably going to change my mind about upgrading to the M1/M2 iPad line if that's the software model that's supported.

@@MarkEllisReviews Totally agree, and thank you for taking my (somewhat frustrated) thoughts in the nature that I intended. As you stated, subscription fatigue, and I have it in excess. I apologize if I came across harsh.
