Video: A compilation of the final four Great Western Railway (GWR) Class 43 HST / Intercity 125 sets out and about the Great Western Main Line, on their final day of long distance intercity services out of London.
All clips were filmed from various locations on the east end of the main line between Reading and London Paddington, these include London Paddington, Reading, Iver, West Drayton and Ealing Broadway stations. I made sure I was down at Paddington for the final four meet up on platforms 1 to 4, but it was extremely busy with enthusiasts, GWR employees and members of the public wanting there final shots of the trains, so apologies for some very shaky footage, but this was one of those moments I couldn't miss and will forever give good memorable footage.
NOTE - The Great Malvern service seemingly only made it to Worcester Shrub Hill due a late inbound arrival.
The only remaining GWR HSTs as of uploading are a handful of short 'Castle' sets operating in Cornwall, Devon and South Wales, most sets have gone into storage with no immediate planned futures, though a few have gone to ScotRail of course on their Inter7City services and one or two on hire to Hull Trains.
This truly marked the beginning of the end of an era with the HSTs, as it is important to note that the Great Western services had the largest fleet of Intercity 125s out of any other main line.

Brilliant video & editing, many happy & sad memories of that day but love the pieces of the hst's flying through Ealing Broadway. I was lucky enough to be on that final hst departure all the way to Exeter, got a feeling the removal of the hst's will bite gwr in the backside.

I hope any HST Class 43 diesel power car plus Mk3 carriages will be preserved for use on heritage railways as well on rail tours.

they probably will be once they’ve been retired, gwr don’t have plans to get rid of them any time soon and the ones that they have gotten rid of have been sent to Scot rail. Only a few class 43s have been scrapped, it’s mostly just mk3s getting scrapped

Prob a dumb question do any of HST trains still run on lines around the country? Or are they all out of service and none used for demo runs at events?

London to Cornwall services are completely 800s/802s now, any HST short set services in Cornwall will no longer come to/from London Paddington.

@Christopher Teasdale Quite a lot of HSTs have gone to Scotland. GWR retain some for services in Cornwall, Devon, Bristol and South Wales. East Midland Trains will continue to operate the HST for a little while longer, but they are all due to go by 2022 once replacement stock is available. CrossCountry still have four HST diagrams. Hull Trains have two HSTs on loan from GWR, but they will go when Hull Trains introduce their new stock - supposedly in November this year. Network Rail's New Measurement Train uses HST vehicles. GWR are returning all the HST stock not needed for the south west and south Wales short sets to the leasing companies. LNER will be returning all their HSTs to the leasing companies as they introduce their IETs. I am not aware of the intentions about the CrossCountry sets - they will remain at the moment, though those diagrams that stable at Leeds Neville Hall might cease to be viable once East Midlands Trains stop running HSTs. Perhaps some additional sets will be added onto the order of whatever replaces the EMT HSTs to allow CrossCountry to retire their HSTs. So far, most of the power cars and some of the trailers that have ceased operating in their original roles have been refurbished and gone to ScotRail or to the GWR short sets. There are already a handful of power cars and rather more trailers stored off-lease. From here on, the amount of redundant HST stock off-lease is going to grow quickly. The future is looking pretty bleak for that stock; it has issues with PRM-TSI compliance (accessibility for disabled people) and I would have expected any good proposals for further use to have emerged by now. I would expect a small number of vehicles to go for preservation, likely to the 125 Group, but the preservation interests can only take so many. It sounds as if the National Railway Museum are taking 43002, the first production power car (which was the one in the original InterCity 125 livery on Saturday). Most of the vehicles going off lease from here on will not be so lucky - they will likely finish up being scrapped once any useful parts have been stripped.

You know the old saying, why change something if it's not broken. Should of left them running.
@noaerrr
@noaerrr 2 жыл бұрын
they did, they just needed more trains on stopping services so they took the class 43s out of service on long distance trains and replaced them with newer, mostly worse, trains that were more economical and didn’t need door replacement

They were great in the 1980s. Elderly people still remember the huge difference these trains made, sometimes cutting travel time by a full hour or more and all in unprecendented comfort. But nowadays... Let's please be honest: They are simply an old, inefficient, polluting diesel nightmare. 😂 One or two of them should be preserved but other than that class 43 should really now make its final run to the museum or, indeed, to the scrap yard. British railways should be COMPLETELY electrifiend and then we should do away with diesel trains entirely. I know, due to our beloved political leadership (both sides!) that's not very likely to happen but I haven't given up hope yet!😂🤣😆

What is all the fuss about. An HST is a glorified DMU. Just don't get it. No locomotive, just a rake of coaches with a motor at both ends. Crikey, I can't begin to imagine how these enthusiasts would have dealt with the end of Castles and Kings in the 60's. King versus HST? Talk about chalk and cheese!! Time to chuff chuff out of here!
@Cactus732
@Cactus732 4 жыл бұрын
The fuss is that they’re probably the most significant trains ever to run on the BR network, the fact that intercity rail services even exist in this country today is mainly down to the HST. The end of even A4 Pacifics on BR wasn’t even close to being as significant as the end of long distance HST services.
@noaerrr
@noaerrr 2 жыл бұрын
they completely saved br back in the 70s and revolutionised rail travel in Britain, also it’s not really much like a dmu. With the hst they stick 2 class 43s on each end of a rake of mk3s. The class 43 can be separated from the rake and drive independently and are interchangeable. I’m not massively sad about the full hst going im sad about the class 43 locomotive that pulled it.
