Tbh I agree with all of your points (except for the RPG thing) but I guess to me, those critiques weighed against those highlights culminate in an okay game rather than a great one…I’m glad you enjoyed it though! Also happy birthday!

I agree with most of what you said. I think this game's biggest issue with its combat is a similar issue that XIV has, in that Yoshi P still has not learned to let the game's players be challenged. I don’t understand his phobia of allowing his players to die if they fuck up, but it's a prevailing issue in his games, especially recently (in Euphrosyne, on day 1, we were skipping mechanics even with several deaths per boss, and nothing that hit you was ever lethal). I hope the backlash towards this game's complete and utter lack of challenge changes his attitude towards how difficulty should be handled, because you can easily coast through this game without dying more than you can count on one hand, even if you're just a beginner. Ryota's combat is held back by Yoshida's design philosophy, which is a damn shame because XVI is _really_ fun to play at a higher level. My favorite moments with the game had to have been the no hit challenge incentives, because those really showcase how well designed and challenging these fights can be.

Overall I loved the game but you hit the nail on the head for me. This game reeks of Yoshi P's design philosophy which I've been taking more of an issue with in XIV in recent years. It's like he's afraid to let players actually fail at his games which results in some really middling and kinda boring game design imo. I started noticing a lot of the issues with XVI on my Final Fantasy mode replay, so much so that I quit after the Titan fight due to boredom. I realised that pretty much everything about the game felt the same, just that enemies had more health. While the combat system can be satisfying (had a lot of fun labbing combos and tech during my playthrough) it really does become tedious after a while and does not have nearly the same depth or complexity as something like Devil May Cry 4 or 5 which are two games that I have spent hundreds of hours playing without getting bored. I think that by trying to appease so many different fans (casual players, RPG enthusiasts, character action lovers etc...) it resulted in something that is just okay in most areas but doesn't really excel in any particular area. I think the story and character writing is probably the strongest aspect of the game. XVI could have been something truly amazing if they had decided to ditch most of the RPG aspects, expanded on combat, made it a true character action game and streamlined the game into a shorter 20 hour experience. XVII is almost certainly already in extremely early development or pre production at this point and I hope that if CBU3 are working on it that they really take to heart all of the feedback and criticism that XVI received. They're clearly a very talented group and I know they can do much better than XVI.

I don't understand why folks are mad at 16 for not being turn based when FF as a mainline series hasn't been turn based since LITERALLY X-2 LIKE TWENTY YEARS AGO

Really goes to show that Yoshida was right in that not many people play FF anymore, so they don't really understand that FF has been and can continue to be this way while still maintaining its identity. FF really fell off in the past several years, so the drama was able to stir up without much resistance from the very few people who still play and keep up with this series. That being said, this game is nowhere near perfect and has plenty of issues that still need ironing out before it can achieve the all-time great status. If it wanted to be an action game, it _really_ needed to commit to it instead of holding itself back just to appease the very loud individuals that thought they would literally die if FF changed combat systems, like it has several times before. The fact that the devs limited themselves to try to please everyone really held the game back, so if they make another one, they need to go balls deep and make it the best damned action game ever. Get rid of the half assed RPG systems. Remove the poor side quest design and replace it with some fucking _boss_ fights. Give the protag more combo and attack options, and maybe some interactable environments. More platforming segments. A more fulfilling ranking system and better enemy AI. XVI is not really a bad game, but it surely has some room to grow.

Because most of the turn based fans were like ok 13 was a bad experiment,14 was an MMO and 15 started off as an action game spinoff we'll let those slide but the next one better go back to what early games did or we'll be pissed like I've seen one of them say it's not the fact they don't know that square made replacements like bravely default but that they want to see Square throw a large budget like had FF16 to make something that can compete with Persona 5 when they don't understand Persona has a much much smaller appeal then Final Fantasy

I absolutely loved FFXVI I had high expectations and it delivered. I do agree that the pacing was a bit off though like seriously 14 side quests before the final boss?!?!

It’s literally my default game! However Ive always really liked that God of War/DMC style combat.. It’s definitely great they implemented it but I don’t think every modern FF entry should be this way.. My only gripe is the story while intriguing is a little hard to follow

Great video as always, Macca. I’m so sick of seeing the complaint that FFXVI is *just* Devil May Cry. When I think DMC, I think of a combat system where you focus primarily on a single enemy, the timing of your button presses can alter your combo significantly, and you manipulate the left stick to determine what moves you’re using. Depending on the player character, movement could also be a little bit stiff and deliberate. I just don’t think that describes this game. You might be the first person I’ve seen to echo my sentiment that Clive’s general move set feels very inspired by Nero-and DMC5 Nero, specifically. I don’t think that contradicts my previous thoughts because Clive can feel inspired by Nero without the game itself feeling just like a DMC title. If anything, I’d almost say the ability system here feels a lot like a more involved version of the runic attacks from God of War 4 and Ragnarok, mixed with some of the design philosophy of the team’s other hit, FFXIV-the cooldowns are varied enough that the player can come up with sort of a light version of an MMO rotation, and if you’ve ever played FFXIV with a controller, the use of triggers and buttons in tandem certainly feels familiar. Apologies for the wall of text, but I really love this game and could say so much more; I’ll just stop myself here. Am I onto something? Am I crazy? Is this game *actually* just Devil May Cry with chocobos? I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts!

Honestly after finishing the game, I do feel there's more they could do with the world. Some things that could be explored further, like the political events following the ending as well as continuing to explore the bearers liberation angle. Could even pull a X2 and have the MC be Jill with the question of what happened to Clive being a narrative throughline.

@@Macca They need to do more for Jill through patches to update the existing content of the main game and then a Jill DLC that makes her playable for a portion of the 5 year time skip, which would also give us some flashbacks of her time in the Iron Kingdom. After they do that, i would agree that she can be a protagonist, but as of now i dont think there`s enough.

The argument against the combat change is WAY to late as there’s been many non turn based games before like adventures 11 14 the 7 spin offs type-0 even 15 before this had action combat so I really don’t get why now it’s a problem for people (I personally love 16s combat) my only issue with this game myself is that it’s a PS exclusive

I am personally offended with your points. Usually I would label someone a Square Enix fanboy for this, but after looking at your content, I can tell you are unbiased, so I'll instead chalk it up as a personal opinion of yours, which I'll respect. The game failed to resonate with me the same way as older Final Fantasy games, but if it resonates with you on a personal level, then it's fine by me. I won't force my opinion nor any other's opinion on you for liking something we don't like. Even if something is trash to people, minority or otherwise, doesn't mean it can't resonate with others.

FF16 is an RPG, and even a JRPG... but it is not a turn based RPG. Unfortunately, that's the category I actually enjoy playing. Still, may give this one a shot anyway.

16 did not "move away from turn based". I can legally vote, drink and drive, and the last turn based game is still older than I am. We're up to 16, and the last turn based mainline entry was 10. Does everyone have amnesia or something? 11 and 14 are MMOs, 12 and 13 have windups for skills, and 15 is literally a full blown action game like 16 is, it's just a really bad one.

whenever I see the "The story is like Game of thrones" I just stand up from my chair and leave.... I do not care about game of thrones and despise that comparison, I also hate watching cutscenes and not playing, reason why I will never replay MGS 4, for me 16 is probably one of the worst games in the franchise. FF has not been good since FF X-2. 12 gameplay was great, but the story was not but ok fine let's say FF 12 and I don't count the MMOS because those are vastly different from the SP series. Seriously 11 and 14 should not be Mainline FF just for the fact that are MMOS, I just can't and refuse to pay to play a game, if I bought a game and bought the expansion I shouldn't have to pay to play for a limit time, reason why I only played WOW on pirate servers. Anyway FF 16....meh is basic, is boring, is easy, the Devil may cry comparison is annoying and nowhere near as good to even DMC reboot.

It’s not that good, it’s a solid 6 or 7. Combat is boring AF and most of the gameplay mechanics are either filler or underbaked and those things compound… gear is trash, so I have no incentive to explore because the loot I’ll get is boring at best. The open world is beautiful but has about 8 enemy types on repeat and while I loved the dungeons, every boss feels like a damage sponge and the bosses come in sets of 5. It feels like a lot of the design fundamentals are either forgotten or ignored for this one. Bosses are cool but most enemies are fought the same way (mash buttons, use abilities on CD) and there’s little growth in your tool kit through the game. DMC and Bayonetta give you new weapons and abilities throughout the game and they design enemies so that you need to switch up your gameplay. FFXVI does none of that. Add a really basic combat system and you end up with a game that is neither here, nor there. Combat is subpar for an action game (one button masher with skills on 30-60 second CD) and the RPG systems are subpar for an RPG. It’s just not that good… I liked the story well enough but 30 hours in I have no motivation to keep going. I hoping this game gets a redemption arc in the form of some post launch updates, maybe giving us an element system and some interesting gear. But as things are it’s a mid game that will be forgotten in a month or two.

I disagree with your take. FF16 wasn't what I looking for from FF series. Jill is supposed to be heroine, but she's forgettable in the game. Eikon battles sure are pretty, but feel on the rails to me. Lack of rpg elements also wasn't great for me.

No, NO it is not. If this would have been a different IP like a new DMC (Which it plays just like) i wouldnt have had a single issue but this is a straight up travesty to Final Fantasy and doesnt deserve the name. I'm just going to stick with RPG franchises that still make actual RPGs for their fans.

The new FF isn't turn based even though the franchise hasn't been so in twenty years and isn't an RPG even though it has plenty of RPG mechanics and elements core to Final Fantasy that even other mainline entries have lacked but because I said so it is both not an FF game and it's bad screeeeeeeee! That is what this comes off as. The fact that you'd go from having zero issues at all to calling it a factually bad game and a travesty shows that the actual game isn't what your using to determine if the game is good or not for some reason. You only give a shit about the IP, not the actual game, and I studied IP Law so this is funny as shit coming from me. Go simp for 15's unfinished ass or 13 which yall all hated last I checked
