I honestly believe this game had the most ruthless main boss of the series. Yes, Kefka poisoned the people in the castle and then killed people and destroyed towns, but Emperor Matheus killed the same amount of people, and had so much evil he split in two and reigned in two different planes of existence.

Personally, I like the idea of stat progression in FF2 because it feels...real Want to be a better swordsman? Pick up a sword and start swinging. You might build some agility when dodging attacks. Or expand your health and mana from pushing yourself to your limits.

I don't like the leveling system either, but it's always been strange to me that Elder Scrolls uses the same leveling concept, and people are fine with it there.

That is a good call out. Thinking about it I want to say it is because those game are more actiony but I don't think that is it. I think it might be because it is too free in FF2. Meaning anyone can use holy at any time and while you can go in a build direction it doesn't really have focus or rails. Where in scrolls, if I remember correctly, you usually need a skill or have to level a skill first before you can using the advance techniques. That I think gives a sense of direction, focus, and structure when doing a build instead of just spamming skills for skill ups. I'm probably going to be stewing on this for awhile lol.

The battle system was quite different in this game that when I played it for the first time over ten years ago (Gameboy Advance version), I ended up having only Cure II when I faced the final boss. Got through, yes, but it was unnecessarily too hard, because I didn't realize just how the battle system worked. I do know it now, though. Other than that I enjoyed the game.

Yeah it is an enjoyable game for sure. I have no idea how you did it with just Cure 2 lol good job. The pixel version helps with that difficulty things feel more exhausting as opposed to brutally unfair.

Everything I've read of the original nes version makes me understand why many wouldn't like it but the pixel remaster I feel mitigates enough of the games problems to the point I can appreciate it as a forward thinking yet poorly executed vision that I admire

How does it compare to the other JRPG out at the time is the real question i would say. Looks like Dragon Quest 3 is consensus for best in 1988. Would be interesting to see what it did better.

I am not overly familiar with Dragon Quest but in Japan, at least at the time, it was the bigger franchise. DG3 reviewed much better because it just improved on what people loved about 1&2 giving a bigger world, better stories and quests, and a enhanced job class system. Dragon Quest seemed to know what it was and what people liked about it at the time, Final Fantasy was still trying to nail that down. Seems to reflect a bit on how FF2 reviewed in the 5-7/10s where DQ3 ranges from 7-10/10s and blew up sales number in Japan.

I hate FF2 the same as I hate Romancing Saga series.. the leveling system FF2 leveling system can easily screws you if you don't know how it work, if you attack too often then sure you'll get insanely strong, you can easily K.O. enemies in one attack but becuase of that you'll notice that your HP is insanely low.. why? Well that's because enemies rarely have chance to hit you before getting k.o.ed... therefore you can't raise your max HP and ultimately becomes glass canon... Your character heal magic also harder to level up because you rarely have chance to heal in the process

The pixel does give you passive HP growth as a setting you can use which helps avoid the smacking each other. Your healing issue still stands though.

For me it's pure sword and shield fighter firion, pure black mage with no weapons maria in the back row, and guy with white magic and dual daggers (keeping main gauche in the off-hand)

I think the only real "problem" with the game is that by the time anyone was able to play it here it felt incredibly dated. If we got everything in order it would have been fine, but we had already played 6 and 7 and you can't go back from that. FF1 is just as dated but it gets a pass because it's The First, but this one doesn't get the benefit of any nostalgia.

Ff2 is actually the first saga game. It was an experimental game, and it has good ideas. I hate the implementation though, in this game and the saga "saga". Improving yourself by your actions is cool, but the rng is pure bullshit, and some of the actions are boring (like you want more hp? Get hit a lot... aka stay without doing nothing in combat =p). It's a grindy game in which the grind is not fun, at least for me. I don't know... make your character with more hp by fighting wearing heavy armor for example, or quicker for fighting with papercraft armor for example... and make consistent the increase in stats... reduce the fucking rng... i know this game is pretty old, but that same inconsistency perdures in actual games

Because it’s not a bad game, just a poorly executed one.

For the same reason all version of FF2 are PURE CRAP due to NOT having a NORMAL EXP system and that doesn't change with the Pixel version of it.
