For those playing the pixel remastered on Steam, the developers intentionally or unintentionally killed part of this strat with the Flan; they are now gone from the tip of land south of Altair. Instead, you can find them along the strip of land west of Mysidian Tower, but you will encounter stronger mobs between Flan encounters, and the Flans can take damage from attacks and flee. The upside is that Teleport/Warp/Toad all miss so that you can level them, and their flee chance is low, so with a group of 6 Flans, you can still likely burn through your mp before they all run. I found beefing my characters up with Captains some more helped, and eventually, my shield skill capped out at level 13 from the mobs between Flan making it impossible for them to hurt me. Just bring a stack of Crosses with you and antidotes as the monsters between flans can poison and curse your party members. A notable downside will be that you can't just level up your fist or bows past approximately levels 12-13 on the Flan and the other monsters in the area. However, your weapons, such as swords and poles, can be leveled up to 16, so it is a mixed bag. LAST: The matching game was not in the original game but added in later versions of FF2. As Pixel Remastered mirrors the original game, there is no matching game and, therefore, no value in leveling up Toad for that purpose.

I remember when I was younger I used to actually not know how to get to Fynn because I always walked too far away from the river when walking north and assumed the enemies you run into up there were how strong you were supposed to get. I ended up grinding up to the point that I could reach Mysidia easily and it was all because I had no idea what to do to progress the game but I was addicted to the game's leveling system. When the day came that I actually walked near the river and found out how to reach Fynn I couldn't fucking believe it. It was like a dream. That was on another file though where I actually tried to play through the game properly, took in every single bit of dialogue to make sure I could find my way to Fynn. I was retarded, yeah.

It was the hardest thing in my life because i didnt know about esuna or antidote either. When i finally got over it, i found the chocobo village and used it to go to mysidia. I could never make it out there after chocobo is gone. I started living in the mysidia. Then i had to delete that savefile. But no worries i finished the game after a year.

You could also level teleport by walking into a town, teleporting out, then repeating until your MP is exhausted. Your character won't die no matter how many times they cast the spell. You could also then take that opportunity to level another character's cure spell, further increasing the gains by casting it on your whole party so you get more opportunities to use it on your character who casted teleport.

FF2 stats leveling is very unique. It's really fun for a normal playthrough to have the flexibility to do your own class. If you try to max everything, it gets super grindy indeed. Autobattle from newer version helps a lot with that.

But have worst magic leveling system. The only magic you can leveling it easy is Cure spell because using magic outside battle will always give you 2% magic exp regardless of level while on battle using it once can be higher on lower level and lower on higher level to the point you only get 1% or even lower at magic level 12 or higher and of course that animation waste time to long. Also to train MP you are forced to have Swap Spell where you use it on full MP against enemy with low Spirit and no mana especially the weak one so when it was success, you lose almost your HP and Mana in a single battle, triggering the growth. Not only that, some stat could even decrease such as Intelligence if you didn't use magic often

In older version of FF II (PSX i guess) there was also some bug - if you cancelled action before choosing target it was already registered as character performed that action - it means it was possible to chose spell/attack then just cancel it and repeat to get bonus stats and spell levels super quick.

To be technical about it, I think my first FF title was Mystic Quest (which obviously wasn't considered an FF title by many) Thankfully I was too young to even know what I was getting into. I was visiting my grandparents in Palm Springs, who took us out to pick a present for Christmas, I originally chose Spawn, but my mom said it was sacrilegious, so I quickly looked for something random that looked like the best value, which of course was a 3 disc game, FFVII. Thus started my appreciation for the series, and eventually playing them all.

My first Final Fantasy ever was Final Fantasy 8! My stepbrother of the time brought it over, and I instantly fell in love. It was so different from my other games, Crash, Spyro, Tony Hawk, all games I loved, but none with the focus on characters and storytelling that FF8 had. It introduced me not only to the series, but to the genre, and I still love it to this day. Fun fact, I wanted to rent FF8 when my stepbrother had went back to his mom's, but our game store didn't have it. So I took the next closest thing they had, which was Final Fantasy Tactics. My second-grade self was every bit overwhelmed, in awe, and in love with the game all at the same time. It wasn't until high school that I finally saw Tactics through to the end, and it was such an accomplishment for myself to finally finish a game I started back in elementary school.

My favourite part I found with 2 when I first played it was just how open the map is and how the enemies are levelled to try and stop you. Wandering off the path and finding an enemy who could one shot me was a great lesson but an incredible moment. I would love for rpgs to have a bit more of the openess that this game had. Too many RPGs have become so formulaic.

Yeah, he said this was an old school Final Fantasy trait, but it's really not. It's a Final Fantasy II trait. In the first game you're stuck in the same area until you build a bridge, then you need a boat, then you need dynamite to get out of the inland sea, only then can you explore the full world map, though you still need the airship to get to most of it. Final Fantasy III is almost beat for beat similar only once you've finally opened the full world map you discover it's only a portion of the actual full world map which you still need to get two different air ships to explore. Final Fantasy IV also does that with its underground and space world maps (and Ditto with V and its two worlds). Final Fantasy II is really the only game where you can explore a significant chunk of the world from the moment you can play the game. The other early games are just as restrictive as the, well not newer games since they abandoned the concept of a world map after IX, but the later games.

Yeah it helps to know different strategies too. Dash to mysidia on chocobo forest just below Kashuan once you have money from captain flame bows, start unarmed rather than buy crappy initial weapons (even mithril is pretty bad compared to the cheap 8000 Gil power staff or 5000 Gil ice bow in Mysidia). Dunno how anyone could take time to level 16 toad or double shielding as it's forever. I just equipped ancient sword/sleep blade on non-dominant hand and status doesn't seem to have an accuracy dip, and they hit more often I think though damage is low as you want to dual wield and it creates a status effect should enemy survive. Also prolongs battle for quicker sword growth. Am impressed you knew farming strategies from your first playthrough. I just learned a lot today lol, and I'm not even including the video.

2:12 My first Final Fantasy game was VII, the demo, lol (nah-it was VI) 3:54 You CANNOT do that in the NES original. Just noting! Carry on. 5:26 Noting here that in all versions, Maria does 1.25x damage with bows, but in the NES original this is amplified even more if she's in the back row (and takes even less damage-also has a ten percent chance of evading any attack), Guy and Firion have similar damage amplifiers, though they're significantly less, but Guy is best with either a sword or an axe, and Firion with a sword or a spear (but a spear is best suited for a back row character). Leon's best weapon is either the spear or the axe. 5:36 Maria is the most proficient with all magic, Firion with destruction, Guy with restoration, and Leon... is best to have for alteration type spells (barriers and such-Haste/Slow/etcetera). 7:46 Warp, ah yes, Banish/Escape. I've found that this is one spell that Leon is really good with, but with any of the others aside from Minwu, it's absolute trash. It's better used as a field move. Blink/Fade, now that's a great spell for Maria and for Leon. Problem: takes too long to cast and misses easily. 9:22 Maria deals more damage with a bow. That Flame Bow would rip through the Captain's defenses. 11:06 Evac/Teleport is indeed more accurate, but damn slow to cast. Only Maria should learn this as even Leon has a hard time with it. Minwu...eh. Sure. One of his/their best spells. 12:20 Dual-wielding shields? Yeah. Just don't forget to unequip them later. I didn't know about the minigame. That's interesting and certainly far easier than the tile puzzle in Final Fantasy (I'm way better at solving the Rubik's Cube).

My first FFs that I owned were 7 and 8, which I bought at the same time, but I actually _played_ Dissidia first. I was a kid, started playing Kingdom Hearts, and thought: ”Well, I like this, but it needs much more Leon (Squall) and Cloud.” Cue going over Dissidia twice, once with both characters, and then starting 8 and then 7.

The way I have my party set up on my most recent run (on the PSP version, though I've played through the PS1 version and the GBA version before and tried the Famicom version) is this: Firion as my black mage, Maria as my tanky fighter/red mage, and Guy as my white mage, with the guest characters just being along for the ride. All three are frontline characters, all being maxed in shields, swords, axes, spears, unarmed, and agility, with a few other skills/stats maxed for each of them.

I use an alternative strategy to get overpowered and defeat any enemy you can access before the Scott quest. Simply go barehanded on all three party members and your damage spikes higher and higher as you gain proficiency. When you reach 3+, you can take on the ogres, land turtles, etc. Reach 5+ and you can take on the Captains within two rounds, 7+ will allow you to handle the enemies far to the north, and 8+ gives you enough attack for Mysidia's enemies as well as the extremely powerful Ghosts and Vampire Girls (although curse and especially confuse/charm is still a huge b**ch). You can raise HP just by how hard enemies will hit you as they will take most of your HP but you will kill them quickly too. No magic grinding required whatsoever. Tried in the PSP, Pixel Remaster, and NES versions and it works. You can even take out Black Flans as Critical Hits will take a chunk of their HP out while also fast-levelling your bare handed skill up to 13. You don't need white magic either. Just use potions, hi-potions, and eventually Cottages to heal. You'll get enough gil in these fights to get 99 of each with ease.

Cheers man, great video! I specifically remember owning this on the GBA (Dawn of Souls), exploiting the HELL out of leveling (attacking self, casting magic, healing) my stats like crazy and getting TROUNCED by the Emperor because of it. He was actually so fast that I could only get a few strikes in before I was obliterated, and seemed to be on a constant string of attacks.. Crazy to watch Guy, with 6,000+ HP, annihilated within 10 seconds of the fight starting. Funny enough, I never beat him and never played it again. Maybe I should, this version looks gorgeous!

The problem with early grinding in Breath of Fire III & IV is that you hurt your stats doing so. The early Masters you can learn from are decent for the early game, but the stat bonuses on each level-up they provide aren't nearly as impressive as most later Masters.

FF4 on SNES is... not something you can really do this to It's by far the most linear game in the entire series, you will pretty much always have the exact same party, with the exact same skills, exact same equipment and exact same stats at any give point in a playthrough Your only real option for becoming overpowered would be a soul-less level up grind, and the very occasional rare drop It's honestly a shame because it's great game the first time you play it, but because every single playthrough is nigh identical, the experience just degrades each and every time The 3D versions may have more options though, with the Augment system
