I used to have major problems with this fight, but I have beaten it twice just this week, lol. It turned out that you apparently have slightly more than 1 second for each button on average, and I guess you could also simply assume that the first 2-3 buttons will be some permutation of X and △, and then make those inputs as quickly as possible, so that you have some extra time for the other buttons.

​@@killua1992xD I actually beat the swordfight on a newly released version - the Steam version, I think - and that version is apparently much more forgiving than the original version, so I guess that this explains why it suddenly felt so easy. =P The original version is essentially all about pushing the buttons really quickly, and never making a single mistake.

@@Peter_1986 I'm on the PS1 and it's ridiculous......I got home today, and I did it literally the fastest ive ever done it, and i still got 99.....I did want to do a normal play through but get all missable items except excalibur 2 as its my 1st playthrough. I don't think my reactions can react any faster....it's most frustrating when it goes x, triangle, multiple times then throws an arrow at ya and your just not expecting it then too top it off if you fuck up you can't just press a button like R2 for example to restart the mini game.....of all the FF sidequest minigames ive played this is by far the most toxic. Squaresoft must of really wanted to piss people of when making this haha

@@killua1992xD The Left and Right buttons always threw me off a lot for some reason; I guess probably because Zidane's and Blank's animations for those buttons look much less smooth compared to the action buttons, and this messes up the rhythm. I have heard that some people like to turn off the sound and cover most of the screen, so that they don't risk getting distracted by the rhythm of the music and only see the actual buttons; that might be worth a try.

Almost 3 hours i spent in that screen... The card was nice at least ^^

This minigame would have been much more tolerable if you could end it immediately after you made a mistake, like maybe be pressing the Select button or something, so that you could make a new attempt without having to wait for it to end.

I've given up for now....seeing as it wouldn't be a perfect game without excalibur 2 anyways. I keep getting 99 Nobels, ive covered my screen so all I could see was the commands, and i turned the sound off. This made it a lot easier, as I could focus solely on the commands, and not be distracted by the frames, lagging slightly behind the commands or, the music that just becomes irritating after an hour of trying. I've been trying this 3 nights in a row and I want to enjoy the game. So my next playthrough where I go for excalibur 2 and a perfect game I will grind it out. But what's more annoying, if you need to get excalibur 2 in under 12 hours, surely you need to get a perfect fight scene in three tries at most, in order to save time? Imagine screwing it up, then having to reset, and go through the cut scene + mini boss fight just to try again to save on time how utterly toxic.....so im just going to enjoy the game and suffer on my next playthrough 😭🤣😭🤣

​@@killua1992xD I tried this minigame on one of the remasters some time ago - I am fairly sure that it was the version for PlayStation 4 - and it was actually much easier there, so it might be better to attempt a perfect game on that console instead. Another challenge that might be fun to try would be a "no healing challenge", where you never allow your HP to increase at any point, except when the storyline forces you to get healed (you are however allowed to use buff spells such as Protect and Shell, as long as you never deliberately increase your current HP, so White Magic will still be useful); this would involve some interesting planning, where you try to get specific helpful items, figure out ways to kill the bosses as quickly as possible, and try to Level-grind as long as possible before each new storyline healing event.
