Did you know that cure heals according to your max HP? The more HP you have the more you heal. Dark king has 30K HP meaning that if you use cure on him he would heal so much that it would exceed the 56K which is the limit for any number in this game, so instead of healing he takes 10K damage 😅

Well, it has simplistic and random combat with too many instant kills and illogical weaknesses (like the skeleton being weak to arrows), and the level design is incompetent at best and malicious at worst, tedious and lacking any sort of telegraphing. Most of the shit it gets is deserved, I'd say.

Afaik the team made two games. FFMQ and Final Fantasy Legends 3/ SaGa 3. Both games are really off brand for their respective series. SaGa 3 was however remade on DS (Japan only) and was changed to be less like the Gameboy iteration and more like SaGa 2.

the night is saved. i really dig the long videos! i had mystic quest on the game boy. was not able to figure it out as a kid 😁 to be fair, it was in english, which i did not understand as a child. it took until ff7 (i guess i was around 12 or 13) when i started to understand and appreciate rpgs back then. i am sad i was never into snes rpgs until i was much older, but the ps1 had quite an amount of excellent rpgs to explore. ff7, ff8, ff9, ff tactics, star ocean, legend of dragoon, vagrant story, chrono cross, xenogears, grandia, koudelka... just to name the few i played, there are much more really good ones. it was truly amazing

I was too old to enjoy this game when it came out. I had already played through Final Fantasy on the NES, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy II(IV), among others and this just felt so much of a step backwards. That said, I appreciate it more now for what it was trying to do, even if I still don't like it as an RPG for my own tastes.

in the volcano and the ice pyramid, the enemies are like anywhere else, specific spots. only in these two dungeons are they "Hidden" until u get the gas mask and the mirror respectively. there are no random encounters in this game. period. however while ryu says u can run from random battles, in this game u cant be "blind sided" with a random encounter while ur half or low health, u see an enemy coming up and u can heal if u know ur half dead.

Fun fact! this game has a bug with the companions when they leave and join your party, their stats don't update when you change party members until you reset the game, so part of the reason you were having trouble with phoebe being terrible in the last dungeon is because she was still using Reuben's stats from on the ship.

The composer specifically played bass guitar for a metal band. If you pay attention to the soundtrack, you'll notice that the bass isn't just a triangle wave doing its own thing. It actually complements the other parts of the soundtrack like a bass would in a real band.

Hey Ryu love the content man, starting a 2nd and 3rd channel in genius so you can post long form content like this for us that enjoy it while not having to worry about it hurting your main channels views, it absolutely boggles my mind how your main channel isn't at 1M subs yet, your content is top tier. Curious, have you ever played the PS1 JRPG "Beyond The Beyond"? I picked it up as a kid on because I saw it had more than 1 disk and I played FF7 and that game was amazing and was on multiple disks so I figured it must be true for BTB as well, it's a great rpg, little heavy on the random encounters but has an overall awesome story and memorable characters.

Little FF: Fun Fact for you. In Japan, this game is called Final Fantasy USA and was made because they thought Americans would not like the higher difficulty of the Japanese versions of the Final Fantasys of the time. IIRC, Final Fantasy II (IV) was nerfed and made easier for the western release as well.

Small correction 1:17 Your DAD buys you a game and in the store he explains Buddy you're going to have some yardwork and chores to earn this plus some allowance money. You can't wait until you get home so in the car ride home you open the game and discover a world map! Wowzah can't wait to get home. Mystic Quest was Japan thinking Americans at the time couldn't understand how RPGs worked which is why it is a dumbed down version of an RPG.

What I always tell everybody who says MQ is "too easy" is "try beating it without abusing the Cure or Life spell in unintended ways" ... even Ryu here, uses Life as a Heal once during the Dark King fight which is technically not supposed to be allowed, but eh, we'll let it slide. But what annoys me are the people who cure spam the Dark King and then say the game is "easy". Or they use the Life spell for full HP and status curing when it's not really meant to be used like that. Doesn't matter which boss it is, when the game wants you to die, you WILL die. Every boss has some kind of BS status effect that will end you. Early-game it's usually Paralyze, Sleep or Confuse... with the Dark King, it's Petrify. Confuse is especially annoying earlier in the game.

this game gets a lot of shit, but it also was my first JRPG, and it got me interested in the genre. It may not be that hard, but I think that´s just because you can easily grind levels, and even if you lose battles, it feels easy because you can just restart the battle. Imagine always having to reload, people wouldn´t think of it being THAT easy when you loose progress all the time^^ All in all, simple game, even simpler story, but still, the maps have it´s charm. I liked it for what it was

I’ll admit, the only exposure I had to this game was that ProJared video from all those years ago, but this game doesn’t seem as bad as Jared made it out to be… at least for the reasons Jared gave. The fact that every enemy seems to be able to insta-kill at every point in the game, on top of the battle order seemingly making NO sense whatsoever, make the battling seem so awkward. All in all though, this seems to be right at home with the SNES library and the music was bitchin’!

I enjoy watching Ryu, and Mystic Quest is my favorite game. I know everthing about this game. Saying that, I find this play through very hard to watch. Missing Excalibur, Exit, Meteor, Thunder and a lot of the armor, really makes the game hard.

brother... I always hesitated to play this hidden gem since there are weird reviews but you somehow make every game more appealing
