Theories of the Music Box:

This is a Limited Edition Final Fantasy VII Music Box that plays Aerith's Theme. According to ffmerchandise 1000 were made into production, but this number does not agree with the facts. No serial number passing 100 has ever surfaced on the web. If you have a music box that surpasses the 100 mark please send me a message with a picture (I have yet to receive one). Only three digits fit the serial #, not four which discards the 1000 claim, and zeros (ex:000) are never counted as part of a limited production process; everyone knows this. I would like to believe that the original number for release would be 777, this would be more fitting.
The theory behind the number of music boxes produced varies from collector to collector. Digicube went bankrupt during the production of these FF VII music boxes so they were not fully completed according to sources. Collectors have come up with their own theory that around 100 limited edition music boxes were fully licensed by Square and produced by Sankyo Orpheus. One theory suggests that during the halt of the production there were a certain amount of music boxes left but not fully developed, only the movement remained. It wouldn't make sense then how one would surface now (in a different box and package) and not any other. If there were indeed musical movements left over from that production era more would come to surface instead of just one. Sankyo does make custom music boxes so if you send them a "midi" file of the music you want created they will do it which seems to have been done for the current surfaced FF VII music box which would make it unofficial and "reproduced", not original.
So for now, according to the facts, it is safe to say that only 100 official Final Fantasy VII music boxes were released. To say otherwise would just be speculation.

Oh yes. Reuge music box movements 50 notes and larger shift to play a song in parts or another song. On a Reuge three song/part cylinder, the mechanism shifts to the left for the final section.

These were on sale for a very limited time in 2001. I believe only 50-100 of these left the Sankyo factory as the company (Squaresoft) was bought out by Square-Enix which you are probably familiar with. According to a website that I can't seem to find any more, the reason 1000 were produced but only 100 were ever released was because they had Nobuo Uematsu himself listen to each of them and purposely only select the 100 best sounding ones. I saw an authentic one of these for $50,000 USD on ebay.

They’ve just announced the pre-orders of a re-release, on Square Enix Japan, a few days ago. Looks like the same music box, but the cover is decorated. Should be out in October 2024. Since they don’t provide sound samples, hard to know if they rearranged the melody slightly.

Anyone who is actually willing to dish out $10k for one of these, be careful. The ones that are currently on eBay are not official. There's no limited edition number, no certificate of authenticity from Squaresoft/Digicube, and there's no plaque but rather a sticker stuck on the back where the green is. Be careful if you're serious in buying one. The bootlegs are not worth more than $1000 in my opinion as getting "any" type of music box made from Sanyo in this model is around $900 US. If you don't care if the music box is official or not then it's the next best thing to owning the real one (the bootlegs on eBay).

Oh, sorry! Orpheus was a Greek figure, a legendary musician. So much so he was nicknamed the "father of songs"~ Thus, since the music box maker is also named "Orpheus" it makes sense that the sound would be so beautiful~ ^w^ Since Orpheus pre-dates such stories as the Round Table, I would think he counts as a part of ancient history, right? :3

I'm not an expert of music boxes (only acquiring them :) ), but this is why there's a shift midway during the video. I believe this shift in the mechanism moves the cylinder so that new needles are reached thus creating new notes as the cylinder turns.

I think that is one of my favorite parts of the whole franchise. It lends a level of the story that is other wise inaccessible. Funnily, even this music box's manufacturer "Orpheus" explains it's beauty perfectly~ I think even Orpheus himself would have had a challenge to match the beauty of such a box~
