So this game got postponed and landed on my brother's birthday. He passed away two years ago and Final Fantasy 7 was his favorite game growing up and he would play about every 2 or 3 years. Unfortunately the last time he was playing it he never got to finish and was taken from this world too early. I still have his PS4 and when I turn it on it plays Aerith's theme song and I cry every time. He was so excited to play this game and he never got to experience it, so I'm going to be experiencing it for him. I took vacation days for this. I'm ready.

A few things to consider with the development time, the first two years of development after it was announced was wasted because SE didn't like the work provided by Cyber Connect 2 and thus parted with them, and up until early last year Director Tetsuya Nomura was split between this and Kingdom Hearts 3, both developed in separate studios in completely different cities, and according to some reports he spent most of his time on KH3. So if Nomura-san sticks with just this, and the transition to the PS5 isn't too technically difficult, I think it's not too optimistic to say we might be looking at a development time of 2 years. Side note: man, I remember when the two year wait between Xenosaga 1 and 2 was unbearable, and thinking the series must have been cancelled. And it's crazy to think, by today's game development standards, that FF6, one of the fan favorites in the series, was developed and released in only one year.
@Davidsworldtravels4 жыл бұрын
omegagilgamesh sure but back then you could make ff6 with jpg backgrounds and midi soundtracks. Now you need entire orchestras and 4k ray traced lighting particle effects. I hope it's a year or two as well but knowing their track record I'm not going to be holding my breath.

Here's part of the reason I think they did this: There aren't many good moments after leaving Midgar to end future episodes on. The only place I can think of are the City of the Ancients (which is a long ways off from leaving Midgar) and the return to Midgar (which is basically right before the final dungeon so you might as well include the final dungeon in that episode.) This is basically an excuse to starting making shit up if they need to to ensure they can keep decompressing the game, while ensuring each episode has a proper beginning, middle and end. And as for why it's technically a sequel instead of a remake, well, nobody can complain about them ruining canon when it's a whole new story.

My biggest concern is that, after spending 40+ hours in Midgar, once you get out into the open world and visit other towns, all the other cities you visit may feel underwhelming or we won't see as much development later down the road. Again, they've been silent on about how many parts the entire game will be, but I'm concerned that, if let's say they make it 3 parts, the second and third parts will have to be crammed with too much other content that it will feel rushed or far more bland than the opening Midgar part. Or, worse yet, they start cutting or shortening more content or plots to fit it all in. I mean, if they're expanding Midgar into 40+ hours when it was normally like a 4-5 hours max segment may be a hard bar to live up to. Is everything getting expanded? How big is the Gold Saucer section gonna be? What about the whole section of the game when Yuffie steals your materia and you chase after her and you get the whole segment in Wutai with the Turks and Don Corneo? Is there gonna be Chocobo breeding/racing? There are a lot of questions and not a lot of answers. So I'll be getting the game, but I'm tempering my hype and expectations. This is going to be a very hard game for them to ace and really get a slam dunk of a product. And "lofty expectations" doesn't seem to describe it well enough.

Honestly, I think you can do those things in two games. It'll be hard, but with Midgar and so many things out of the way, it can be done.

I finished replaying the original last week and I must say, there's a lot of content that isn't fit for a 2020 cinematic AAA game, also plenty of parts weren't adding much to the story or fun from gameplay. I won't mind if in this remake they'd do something completely different and new, keeping the best inspirations from the origninal, as long as the quality of it will be good.
@blumiu24264 жыл бұрын
@Just Another Guy Because of sidequests, is my quess. I assume they did add some cutscenes that involved characters, but nothing that meaningful except seeing more of them before they die later. That would have a point, but I doubt that total time would exceed 20 minutes unless cutscenes with dialogue. Other than that, a large amount of sidequests. It would be weird if this had mini-games since that would only make sense for Gold Saucer to break the pacing like that, not each part they release.

Many people (mostly those who didn't play the Remake) say that this game is a cashgrab and that the developers dragged the story. However, if you play roughly 1 hour you'll see that this isn't the case; they flesh out characters and settings in a very satisfying manner, expanding/changing plotlines vaguely implied in the original and even adding brand new ones. I'm clocking over 15 hours and I'm having a blast so far. You can really see the attention to detail in every nook and cranny, ranging from small banners with easter eggs to the recreation of music pieces (which there is a lot given that the game employs a delicious dynamic sountrack). I'm kinda ok with the game being episodic, because if it wasn't, they wouldn't been able to add this much depth and develop each character as much as they did. If future episodes will continue to do that, I'm fine with that. I particularly cannot wait to see places like Cosmo Canyon and Wutai getting this kind of treatment. Also, I completely agree with this Yakuza comparison (16:21). Wall Market in particular, reminded me A LOT of Kamurocho, and many silly moments feels like they came straight from Yakuza. I fucking love it.

@@Drakengard65 I did plenty of the original, but not the remake. I can justify some of the change though mostly on things were still rather limited 20 years ago. "some changes" Buckle up homestuck, because you're in for a ride. And Sephiroth is like....the same one from the original game trying to fuck everything up so Cloud can't kill him at the end of disk 3 in this timeline. You may think I'm bullshitting you, but you'll see. You'll think I'm crazy then remember this comment after playing and go "jesus he was actually telling the truth"

I won't mention spoilers, as I'm one of those that played the game 10 days early and have already finished it, but the ending I was very intrigued onto how it will be expanded upon. It's new and excites me to see how they'll take it further in the next part. :)
@SeruraRenge114 жыл бұрын
So as someone else that played it I have to ask. Do you also think the ghost janitors are basically a metaphor for angry fans who don't like story elements to be changed? Since basically their whole job is to make sure the timeline doesn't get altered too much.
@commanderkitsune85244 жыл бұрын
@@SeruraRenge11 I do, and our actions as the player is to break free of that. The Arbiters of Fate are the will of the planet itself, in this new lore. Red said it himself when he got his vision snippet at the end. "That is what will happen if we fail here." If Cloud and the rest fail to move past the ghosts, then the story will continue along the original timeline. If you as the player, get to the end and say, 'This is bull. How dare they change the original like this.' and stop playing, or give up on the remake after finishing it, then you return to the og version within the compilation. However, I feel like the ghosts represent ALL the fanbase, not just the angry mobs. Because some have been responsible for changes. Wedge surviving, for example. As well as Biggs probably. The ghosts kept Wedge in that spot right as the plate came down on him. Initially I thought it was to make sure he died like in the original, but I think it was because the ghosts knew that spot was a weak spot between the surface and the underground lab. Either that, or it was a stroke of luck that he survived, but then the ghosts would try to prevent Cloud and others from rescuing him. A lot of theorizing, but yes, I believe they are seen as the fans that don't want the story to change at all, if not the entire fanbase. But I still embrace what comes next. I loved the metaphor used. It also wasn't convoluted, though the faceoff against Sephiroth at the veeeery end and what was said does intrigue me to see what comes of it in the next game or future installments.

Locking summons behind pre-orders and that it is not even the first CD is disappointing. The Materia system also seems dumbed down significantly. I rather would have waited 5 more years to get the whole thing, but SE gotta recoup that money, from all those mismanaged games. Probably going to get the PC version when it releases a year from now, I can deal with blurry textures but not 30fps.

LOL a year you say? You act like we are still living in a time where everyone is working and going about their day. Dude, NO PORTS are going to come in the foreseeable future. This timed exclusive just got a little bit longer. The fact that nobody has even been giving the green light to work on the ports is troubling. Tho porting takes nowhere near as long as actual development, they might not even green light until the year is up and even if they've already have in secret, it aint being worked on now. Last of Us 2, tho "complete" is on hold indefinitely and all they had left was iron out bugs. I am guessing Cyberpunk is going to be held back too, there is only so much one can do from home and not working as a team with in the same space.

I think, in regards to an auto-heal function, it makes perfect sense that it isn’t a feature. There have been countless amount of times where I have to use other character’s ATB bars in a specific sequence to get the results I wanted. For example, Cloud got KO’d, and everyone has low HP?¿ I have to switch to Aerith first to use Raise, before using a full-party heal with Tifa. It makes it a lot better than when an AI dumbly uses up an ATB bar to heal everyone first just because everyone else’s health is low

So I watched this review a few months ago, as I was interested in the FF7R, but had never played FF7 before (or any other FF game besides FF13). It looked awesome but I had no context vs. the OG. I just watched this review again, because I finally played some FF7 for the first ever last week (for a few hours, thanks to the weekly Xbox Game Pass quest for it), and wanted to compare after finally experiencing a taste of the original. I gotta say, for me the original DOES live up to the hype; it can be kinda difficult to get into a near-24 year old game, having zero nostalgia or experience from before being spoiled by 2 decades of games evolution, but immediately I was gripped, and genuinely enjoyed every moment I played so far, and quickly looked past the dated, but still impressive, visuals. They still hold up really well I think, even though the game is 3/4 as old as I am, and I definitely can see how impressive this would have been to experience 20 years ago. I already did want to play the remake, but I think I would rather finish the original first, as I think the OG would be harder to go back to if started playing the modernly-beautiful remake. The only problem is, I have a tendency to start games, and then take a very very long time to get back to them. Sometimes years even; but I guess there's no rush, and by then maybe the entire FF7 remake series will be available in one package together.

I honestly don't blame the splitting into parts, the original 7 had a TON of content. so much so that it kept you busy for weeks if you wanted to do everything, Chocobo raising, racing, the optional materia side quests, the weapon fights and ultimate weapons quests, etc. This is quite possibly, depending on what they decide to cut will be their biggest game to date. just a question of how many parts is there.

totally agree that the combat could have been better & give more customizations. As expected, exactly what I said about the demo, especially when it comes to likeliness of micro-managing in a more chaotic battles. Gambit system/party behavior system & manual character positioning would be a tremendous improvements for the game combat system, especially for people that really meticulous in their tactical/strategy encounters. Also, still very disappointed that classic mode is basically auto attack easier mode instead of a proper Tactical TBS RPG mode. Very weird 'cause SE already has plenty of exp with modernized TBS combat in recent years with their very successful games (DQXI, Octopath Traveler, etc). Just imagine if the TBS mode is like Octopath Traveler or something more complex/better, Trails series/ToCS games.
@keiichimorisato984 жыл бұрын
I cant wait for someone to mod the PC version to implement a real turn based mode. Also, manual positioning to deal side or back damage would have been great in a turn based game, kinda like the Xenoblade games, which uses a MMOstyle ATB/cool down system like FFXII.

Does the game let you grind exp at all? Like can you revisit areas where enemies will respawn and you can just fight them over and over to farm for gil or items and exp? Another thing. When you beat the game does it show or mention anything where you can transfer your progress over to the next part whenever it comes out? I'm wondering how that will all work out when the next part comes. Will we have to start from a fixed level? Will we still have all our material and gil we collected from the first part?
