Well done Skill Up. You nailed it: "FFVII remake is a game that can and will be torn down by many people for its business model and its minor short comings. But it will also be held up by many others for their sheer love and joy of it all."

@Aaron9 Okay, picture this for a second, a hybrid between the original combat system, FF13's non-static combat positioning and the area affects/combo attacks from Chrono Trigger, ATB system is fine. I'd also consider adding turn based repositioning along the lines of Trails of Cold Steel 'move' command. You're right I haven't played it but I've watched more than enough footage/reviews/livestream plays to come to the conclusion I dislike it. If you favor a more action orientated game with manual character positioning, great, I hope you enjoy yourself. As for me it's a hard pass.

This is popping up again after 3 years for some reason... I'm noticing a lot of similarities in the supposed "issues" he's pointed out and this game got a recommend but FF16 didn't. It has to be the combat isn't it?

Probably the other things he mentioned too such as the lack of rpg upgrades and element Effect, or controlling a party. It’s pretty clear that for better of worse FF16 is a huge departure from elements that have been consistent in almost all the previous games. He liked the game when he played the demo but had some concerns. He also addresses your point in the latest podcast.

16 feels more like a game like Yakuza or DMC with RPG elements but not fully committed to being an RPG, 7 R fully commits to being and RPG. 16 also has bloated side quests and terrible pacing, 7 R is not void of those issues but they are not as prevalent.

Speaking of audio, if there are any Breaking Bad fans here, considering the actor that played Badger voiced Wedge in the game, did anyone else have the issue of only hearing Badger talking to Pinkman whenever Wedge mentioned Jessie’s name in a sentence? I couldn’t unhear it. Amazing game though and the voice acting, audio, and music really are top knotch.

@ThatGBAGamer 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kwazy-mojo This game suffers from the roller coaster effect. The highs are amazing, but the lows are just frustrating. I love this game to death, but every little thing it does bad is reflective of a two issues. The padding done to certain sections that took literally two minutes to get through in the original is insane. The collapsed highway with the robot arms. The train graveyard as well. The lack of urgency in key moments is the most insane part of it all. I love the music and combat, but removing these things, show how the pacing and level design are very weak. The boss fights are amazing as hell though.

@5pointgo I absolutely don't share your enthusiasm for sidequests. Maybe in an actual role-playing game, but not in a shorthand rpg. Not trying to shame anyone who likes being overpowered for their first playthrough, it just isn't fun for me.

Turned a single amazing game into five ridiculously long, boring ones.. Nothing but hours of lame fetch quests, literally one after another in the same town for hours on end.. Linear dungeons that slog on, literally slowing your traversal down at every turn, reusing nearly every environment, forcing you through the same mob infested areas over and over throughout the game.. I... think there has to be more than two other parts, unless they're _considerably_ longer. Midgar is, like, the first third of the first disc. Sure, disc three is the last dungeon and a buncha sidequests but there's still a huge amount of disc 1 and, even if it's a bit shorter, all of disc 2. With as much as the expanded Midgar, they'd have to be blasting past stuff or massively expanding the next parts for only two to be needed.

Nier is truly a fantastic game. It's been a while since a game shook me to the core since Xenogears. It's a game that I would gladly pay full price for. But FF7 will hold a special place in the hearts of many players, and at some point, you can't put a price on that.

@@jego207 well said. It's amazing how people want to judge without factoring in all the reasons why people buy things in the first place. Which is because they WANT to. The price goes towards the hardware, the software and the stuff you can't measure. People LOVE FF7. Ain't no price tag on getting an all-time favorite generation-defining game remade with current tech more than 2 decades after the original release. $60, to me, is fair for that kind of experience

@@darkwing5458 No, the problem is people like you who think you deserve the world on a silver platter at a discount. The whole purpose of games is entertainment. How stupid is it to think you can that out of the equation? You sound as if your argument is a game is worth the money if it's packed full of content and caters to your idyllic vision of said game. People buy games to play and enjoy. Unless you know somethin we don't, for all any of us know the next few episodes may be cheaper and function more like DLC. But for you to write this off so totally as a stain on gaming because it's episodic and lacking in YOUR OPINION doesn't mean the game is bad by any means.

@@darkwing5458 The original PS1 game was sold for $50, and the remake is sold for $60. Consider inflation and how it's more expensive to produce games now, the $10 difference for a 23 year gap looks reasonable. Based on reviews, the game (or if you prefer to call it an episode) has at least 35 hours of quality content. Quality does not come cheap. If you think $60 robbery for a well-made game, you may always opt to delay and wait for a discount, or not buy it at all.

I don't get these side quests game keep having. No one seems to enjoy them (according to reviews), who do they cater to? Kids that just want to go kill monsters or something? I absolutely hate the brain dead monster kill quests. I remember FF7 having side quests that you had to really seek out, find by accident, etc... There were likely some silly ones I forget, but overall I WANTED to find all the little secret things out there, that would add a little more to the story. After playing this on PC, away from all the hype and everything, I honestly think the game is overraated, not to say it is bad, as most of it is very good (graphics, sound, music, combat most of the times). Plot changes in comparison to original are baffling to me, most of them are just plainly stupid or unneccessary (Hojo's lab section was the worst level in I don't know how many years I am playing video games) for mostly worst story than original. I wanted from this game just a better explanation of the events in Midgar and better explanation of lives there and that part if very good, but at the other hand you have the ghosts which serves as it turns out as a meta comment to the original. Some changes of how things happend lost it's impact (President Shinra's death in original was wowing and very scary). On the other hand you have all the AV aspect which is amazing, but again this thing is riding a lot on nostalgia and that cannot be denied. For me it is 7/10, kind of inferior game to the original in key aspects.

@@mikev8746 Squeenix is still developing but they are mostly a publisher now and a large portion of their efforts go into publishing games from other companies as well. I feel like the burnout from episodic developing is real and seeing a game deteriorate over time rather then improve is a real possibility. @@gooberglop8461 Thats a good and fair point you're making. I'm currently more on the positive side but who knows how I will look at it when time progresses. There's definitely also a chance it will just get worse with ever release as Square fumbles near the finish line. The first outing though made a good impression for me. When it comes to JRPG's I think it's a mix. Compared to every other genre I think these games have the most the gain and lose when it comes to possible remakes. I'm certain we wont get the next part for 2-4 years at best so the wait will suck. But from my experience the eventual pay off will be worth it. Once you have everything in your hands a decade from now there's simply more value in having 3 parts. You will truly be able to play it from beginning to end with the scope the original had. Absolutely no modern game has offered that much, even games such as GTA and RDR were shorter and felt less 'grand' than a traditional JRPG from that era. This is partially because of how JRPG's heavily rely on abstractions. The characters during the prerendered exploration parts aren't properly scaled, the battles aren't really turn based. The player sort of 'decodes' these things in his head and figures what they are meant to portray. Which means that these large scaled PS1 JRPGs came with a sense of scope that is partially an illusion. The more technology progressed the harder it was to recreate this illusion due to the realism of it all. Which ends you up at games like FF13 and even FF15 in terms of scope and such. That's why I think having three games developed on the Remake has possible advantages, one of them being increased scope and content.

Started this on PS Plus around a year ago following completion of FF16. I enjoyed it so much I decided to try this. Eventually though around Charles 9 I got distracted by another release. Knowing Rebirth was releasing at the end of the month I picked this back up about 2 weeks ago. Currently halfway through chapter 17. Doing everything outside the hardmode trophy and 9 bridal dressed trophy. I’ve enjoyed the game more and mor the closer I get to the end. I feel super blessed to be able to pick up FF7 Rebirth tonight as soon as I finish Remake!

It is amazing, and in no way ironic, how they were able to turn a story from my childhood into a “kid friendlier” version. Gone are the nagging brutal consequences that mirror real life and instead we are left with a glossy neutered version in cruise control. What a breath of fresh air and filler, we can find here. Love how this version did not let respect for the players time, a focused storyline, or any inkling of genuine attempt at some artistic vision… get in the way of those profit margins. Can’t wait to play the short four hour DLC at half the price of the full game. It seems Squaresoft faced some 90s technological limitation when it comes to unnecessarily stretching out the story. Thank goodness Square Enix’s executives made sure to solve this problem and are giving us as many installments as they can to the shareholders heart’s content. With all it’s glorious filler, unnecessary deep dive into inconsequential characters, and expensive DLCs to look forward too, as well. Thank you to all the video game critics that held Square Enix accountable for this masterpiece. Now y’all excuse me but I have to go watch videogamedunkey’s review one more time, i still can’t wrap my head around why he didn’t enjoy sinking 30+ hours into what is approximately only 30% of the story of FF7 Vanilla.

Gutted materia system, brainlessly easy combat, smaller cast, less world diversity(because it has none at all), rewritten story, I was hoping for/expecting a remaster, got this instead. On top of that almost every reviewer is as per the norm, overly positive, It's like watching those IGN reviews where they nitpick thirty things and then give a game a 9 out of 10, and it's like, objectivity, what reality is this ;)? I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way, as a fan of the original - but the strawman that people who will like this game raise - is built upon the idea that people who would have prefered something else are arguing this game won't be a good game, the game - is likely fine, but it's just wearing the lifeless skin of FF7, it's not FF7. Even making the argument for this simply being "part" of the story, no one seems to consider - how are they going to make this "part" of the story. Are they going to release the next title as a stand alone game, or as DLC? If it's a stand alone game, will save files be transferable, and in order to not alienate new players who might not have - or want to play the previous part, will they allow people to start fresh, in the new "part". If it's as I suspect, not really a "part" but simply it's own standalone game, then every part they release will require the same slow start, and ramp up, and you'll never really get a meaningful climax. If they wanted to make a completely different game, they should have ;) That's my personal take.

I think many games operate upon the assumption that there will be a sequel. They usually come up with some excuse to strip away the power or carry it over. It leads me to wonder though, are many expectations driven by the original and complete past product? Perhaps that leads to a lot of disappointment? And to your point, does it also interfere with the reviewing process? Perhaps the brand, the original guided this overall praise? Anyways, I like your point!

I exactly agree. I really based my purchase on this review and the game is basically the opposite of what he said. Still I don’t blame him, reviewers who give games even mediocre reviews get death threats so it’s probably not worth it to be objective. And maybe he really did like it. For me the game is just PAINFULLY bad and was a total waste of money and seriously disappointing. Reviews are just entertainment, they aren’t to be taken seriously

@@Moriningland Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the devs have said the series could go on for years if not decades, its basically another ff mainline game now like KH useing the hollow shell that is original ff7. it could end though i doubt it cause of that trash ending, at the same point as the og ff7 and still keep going cause they have open a can of worms that will allow them to continuously milk ff7 lore for years.

If you skip side quests you miss out on specific dialogue and other less important options and consequences (keeping it spoiler free). Not saying that missing out on this content effects the story drastically , but the side quests do offer more than just money and item rewards.

Everything you said I agree! No FF game is perfect, but I will say FF7R,FF12, and the original FF7 are near perfect games! FF10 has good combat and constant walking.😒 It’s good, but it never gives me that satisfied feeling ,like I do in FF12 or the FF7 games. FFX is also not very challenging. Use Wakka for sky enemies,Lulu for elemental enemies,Yunas summons for giant monsters, and Auron proves Tidus is useless for the ground enemies! The real timed overdrives are flawless, but when combat is done ,the game becomes a walking simulator with random encounters!
