The FMV where Squall got stabbed by an ice shard and fall at the end of Disc 1 then black screen fade to Disc 2 change screen of FFVIII is still one of my fondest gaming memories to this day. Technological advancements are cool, games getting bigger in scale and scope, prettier and better (some) but nothing could replace nostalgia.

Always struck me as the same crap I see on a lot of TV, cliffhanger at the season end or on an episode that wont be out for another week or month. Just strikes me as the writers weren't confident we would want to see more, so they gave us a cliffhanger knowing most would come back just for closure. However I can forgive it like I do with shows where everyone that has a real say chooses to hold the episode until the next one the cliffhanger leads into is ready because it showed that at least someone cared to not insult their fans. Except in games it just feels more like a cheap mockery when in reality they could cut the disc a bit shorter or later without blowing the data budget.

@@russybcool I really miss Squaresoft, as they were in the 90s. And i remember first hearing about the square enix 2003 merger and thinking *no* this isn't good. Both squaresoft and enix had their talent but i never thought it was a good idea to fuse them. Then again ff10 sucked. The story, the characters, the embarrassing voice acting and no world map. The graphics were all it had, but people praise it so highly. So what i mean is, we're lucky we get anything anymore. Anything we want anyway. If it were up to me, everything would be completely different.

I don't know how old you are, so I don't know if you know what it's like to play a game on the first playstation, but it was a tipping point in our society. We had these things called CDs that we listened to our music on, but some of them were meant to play video games on. It was wild just for that, but then to see the bonus stuff, that blew our minds. You just have to think of it in the context of when the game first came out.

Very sad how the DVD boxes soulessly had the discs stacked on top of each other instead of a cool bigger boxes on the PS1, I'd say that was also great for marketing as you could also visually see the game had more to offer and really stood out against the rest, or at least that's how I perceived it during the PS1 era, multiple disc boxes felt SO GOOD to hold and handle for some reason.

@@doggerlander To be fair some PSX and PS2 games put their games on several discs just to make it sell better. It was also cheaper to use two low-storage discs as opposed to one high-storage disk, if you couldn't fit your game on a regular disc.

As a kid knowing nothing, I chose legend of dragoon over Chrono cross because legend of dragoon had four discs which clearly meant it was better than the measly two discs of Chrono Cross... Hahaha, I don't entirely regret it

there is a DOS game called Queen: The eYe which contains five CDs, and if you put one of them in a CD player it plays the game's soundtrack, which is remixes of Queen songs. I was a huge Queen fan in middle school so I ordered them on ebay. Very weird game.

Protip for Parasite Eve 2 if you have trouble swapping discs for nautical reasons - the first disc and second have a huge overlap, a save in Dryfield at night (before the disc 2 transition) can be loaded from either disc. There, I made a comment that was kinda useful and almost related to the video. Now to smoke weed and watch the bits I ignored while writing this.

1:04 Tokimeki Memorial 2 is a great game too! Interestingly the first disk is only used for 3 things; the isometric prologue, epilogues and EVS. The EVS is a kind of voice synthesizer which uses almost a whole PS1 memory card to let you have one of the girls say your name in game. There were 3 additional disks purely for extra EVS modules which came with the game's official magazine "Hibikino Watcher".

That Xbox game with the disks just stuffed into that case in a stack reminded me of a picture that went viral back when GTA 5 released on PC because the physical version (that almost no one bought) had something ludicrous like 7 DVDs inside the box. Also, as a Tomb Raider fan I'm really conflicted about Square Enix selling all of their Eidos series. On one hand the company that bought that stuff is the same than owns THQ Nordic and Deep Silver so I imagine they'll be treated all right, but on the other I don't know if we'll get the super high budget stuff like Rise of the TR or the weird spin-offs like Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light anymore since those clearly came from SE just throwing shit (and loads of cash) at the wall to see if anything stuck in a desperate attempt at figuring out how to western in a profitable way.

It's pretty easy to emulate and just play the 4th disc if you like. The International version of FFVII is the same as the NTSC and PAL version hence why they call it International just with an extra 4th disc to get people who played the original Japanese release to be more interested in buying. It's also very affordable to import as is most Japanese RPGs. The menu music is really great to hang out in, has all the PS1 demo music vibes of Square that remind me of Noriko Matsueda 's techno jazz lounge music.

I started watching your content because you have as much love for the super unique content, hidden gems, and titles that never made it here during the PS1 and PS2 era as I do. I had a massive collection of disc's for both systems from the US, Japan, and Europe, along with thr consoles to play them on, and I truly love the JRPG content and uniquely unusual and experimental games among those two console generations. Sony impressed me with their hardware and initially consumer-friendly approach, and companies like Squaresoft, Atlus, Enix, Konami, and Capcom were still trusted to deliver solid experiences. Jump forward a few decades and it genuinely makes me sad to see Squenix having lived long enough as the hero to see themselves become the villain, but it’s also an unavoidable truth. In addition, Sony is just as bad as every other hardware manufacturer now, worse in some cases. Konami soiled themselves with bad choices and ruthless behavior and jumped off the lake. Capcom is still out there but they don't make much noise and it's been decades since they sold a fighter without nickle and diming people to unlock the full roster. Man, I miss being able to hit a gaming store and find a complete title ready to purchase and sink 40 hours into with no extra payment necessary to have the complete experience.

The 4th disc is a "Perfect guide" for the English version of VII which was released in Japan with the ability to flip between english text and japanese text and added all of the stuff added to the US version, the 4th disc is just a strategy guide, its nothing too special.

Oh yes floppies. They were a pain in the ass to install. Nowadays installing a game on the computer is as simple as a click of a button. But back then you had to make sure you were on the right operating version and some games required a degree at MIT to figure out how to install (at least for a young kid). Probably why I preferred console games until the 00s.

Man, your vocabulary and use of language especially as a non native English speaker is incredibly impressive. I'd say, of the channels I watch, only Tim Rogers is better in that regard and he is 1, an American, 2, a polyglot with at least 1 degree in language and 3, suffers from a neurological condition that forces him to remember even the most minute details of his entire life all the time, and thus, every word he has ever learned the definition of. Man... I wanted to like Chocobo GP so bad. I found some stuff to like playing the lite version. The item system, for one, reminded me a lot of Lego Racers, where you can upgrade items by driving into like items on the track (god, they should really make a new Lego Racers game ._.), and I actually had some fun playing online. Also, there's nothing _necessarily_ with it being more "cutesy", personally I need more of that in my life with all the grim dark sh!t that comes out nowadays, it's mostly just a matter of preference. But man, it's a full price $60 game that looks like it should be worth about half of that (CTR NITRO FUELED was worth about $40 and looks much better imo), the driving can feel stiff, as in it feels like you're not so much controlling the cart as you are suggesting where it should go, and the microtransaction BS just turned me away from the game. And I think Square knows how divisive the game is, since Gil was originally planned to dissappear at the end of each month, but I heard that now they're letting you keep whatever Gil you earn indefinitely, so they are making changes to the game to make it more appealing, but imo they're going to have to do a lot more to the game if they want it to live up to other cart racers, especially the original Chocobo Racing.

I've bad this bonus disk for decades,.in japanese, I bought it at a flea market sale for literal cents. The disk is immaculate and i bought it only cos im a FF7 fan and i had never seen it before. Problem is, my PS1 couldnt read it as it is Japan zone, so it has been sitting in my closet for decades. the guy who sold it to me for coins probably didnt know it was so rare (neither did i tbh). I disagree with this take, after seeing how spectacular and fleshed out part 1 was (you should watch his video comparing RE3 and FFVIIR). There was no way you would have been able to play the entirety of a remade FFVII and be satisfied with the end product in one part, so it was a creative choice as much as it was a business one. You would have just gotten a "Disney liveaction movie"-esque remake that added nothing to the world or characters. And as someone who works in game dev, I also wish people would be more patient when asking for a new game to come out. Making a game of that scale and polish takes time, unless you want us to crunch and ruin our health. I'd understand if fans start to complain if it takes 4+ years (not including the time it takes to actually set up the project and any platform addition/changes) but typically it takes around 3 years for story-based RPGs, and you even got Intergrade to tide you over not even a year ago.

If they gave us the whole game we would have added nothing to the world and chars? Sounds like a good thing when this "fleshed out" world and chars results in chars being unable to die, chars who were always dead magically being alive (Zack), ghost Sephiroth, Heartless, Time and space ghosts, etc. Many people argue this ruins FF7 and takes it to fanfiction levels as it's no longer FF7. You hate people being impatient for games, but they told us all the way back in the PS2 era they were working on a remake, and then again showed us a PS3 tech demo. And then after 20 years it's the first few hours of the first disc, and it's heavily retconned. If they hadn't spent decades hyping it up and then letting Nomura ruin it with his weird vision, people wouldn't be so critical of what little we got.
