FFVIII (as most FF games for PSX) music are module (MIDI) based, so sound depending on samples. PSX used original good qulity Yamaha simples, PC version used normal MIDI, so it use crappy Windows MIDI Synthesizer:p

Both version is awesome, but I like the original than the midi. But lets be honest, this boss theme is the best than the other 2 PSX FFs. Anyway, I do not complain that much about the tracks turning to midi

@RUL1S88 Yes but this is youtube, not a movie trailer on tv, things in a video are open to discussion and you see people on final fantasy videos talk about other final fantasys because it is still the same game type, it doesn't matter if you aren't happy about it because no one besides you has a problem with it.

I remember playing this version the first time and thinking the MIDI format was murdering the soundtrack. Then I heard this particular track and thought it kicked ass. Still do. (I'll always prefer the original, but it's got a really obnoxious snare drum sample that just kinda doesn't fit.) Nice touch how they were able to keep the vocal chanting intact with the MIDI soundtrack too, especially when they failed to do it for FF7. That said, thank Hyne for the Roses and Wine mod.

That's because you didn't have a Yamaha XG, the sound card of kings :) . There is a reason they provided a Soft Synth with these games (7 and 8) for the peasants :P .

FF8's OST was composed with very different samples cut from a very different cloth (so much so there's a common misconception all its music was recorded,) while FF7's OST was designed to sound more like the SNES games. That's why FF7 PC's OST still held up but 8's didn't.

@@reloadpsi Midi on an OPL chip is not the best approach usually. I really enjoy FM, but I do know that the standard Midi drivers are far from close to the actual instrument,s that doesn't mean it's not possible to get a lot closer. THe Megadrivé YM2612 for instance can do a lot more than we give it credit for. I"m just a big fan of the Yamaha XG hardware based cards. As they were really good cards for a reasonable price. The only issue was, they used them for way too long and the software synth just wasn't as good. Sorry I"m digressing, I know. Just when you mentioned OPL :P, I got a bit "ooh I like those... shame MIDI drivers usually are so sucky for them) .

Start of this PC version track makes the feel for me that it's going to be a hell of a fight and you're more likely to lose because the enemy you're facing is terribly strong and dangerous. Otherwise this is crap compared, or course, to the original.

i cant believe the nerve they had fucking the music up so bad when its a rather large part of the FF world. it sets the pace the mood and intention of some characters when it changes or shifts and by how it sounds....so messing it up is inexscusable. if they fix the music in the steam version of final fantasy 8 i will buy it but until then im just not at all interested. im told they fixed it in the steam version of 7 so maybe someday they will but i dont know.

This was from the old PC port, back when computers weren't so hi-tech. If you used computers back in the 90's, you would know that they often had to resort to MIDI to save space. The Steam port is just a slightly touched up version of the PC released, and I can only hope SE changes the music to the PS1 quality on Steam.

The PSX version uses something similar to midi. The quality of the music of your game will depend of the quality of the midi synth your sound card had.

That's still not an excuse, look at Metal Gear Solid: It was ported to the PC the soundtrack sounded exactly the same as it did on the PS1, and it was released a year earlier. That being said i think Force your Way is one of the few tracks that acually sound really good on PC version.

It's the PC version, and computers weren't all that powerful back in the days. So using this type of music was better than nothing. BUT they released the steam version, which has THIS PC music, not the PSX music. It really sucks, because this PC version is just forgettable and sounds terrible. So yah, it's suppose to sound like a degraded version of the song, but now it's just super unnecessary to use this music up to this day now.

I would disagree about the computer not benig powerful enough deal. Companies did this, because it was cheaper. Many games in the 90s were doing excellent cd-quality music. Games like Shogo, used full on mp3s back in 98 that sounded great. You could go into the games directory, and get a good majority of the soundtrack. See, if I remember right. You had to pay a license fee to use certain audio codecs. Square knew not many were going to buy the pc version. So they just made midi files, that they felt were close enough. What I don't understand, is that the pc version of 8, I do believe had 5 discs. So it had plenty of room! Mp3s had been around for years at that point. Once compression was out, nearly everyone jumped on the bandwagon. They literally went bottom-barrel dollar with the pc versions. Granted, they did look great. I remember downloading the demo of 7 from my tomb raider 1 disc back in 2000, and thought it looked so sharp compared to my ps1 version. So take the original half life. You could play the game without the disc. But if you wanted music, you had to have it. Easy cheap way to do it. Hah, it glitched sometimes so if you had a music cd in, it'd play that instead of ingame audio. Though I believe they fixed that.

The PSX version uses something similar to midi to produce midi. They probably just rushed the PC version and converted the PSX files to midi which depending of the quality of the midi synth that was prensent in your PC could sound from awesome to complete garbage. PCs could produce much better music since a long time, but as they lacked room on CDs, they just decided to not take up more room. They could have compressed the music somehow, but maybe the compression would have been way too high. However they could have done the music another way without compressing anything by using mod files. Epic MegaGames did this since the early 90's, and amiga games did this since the amiga existed, and as far as I know, making mod files is free in comparison to MP3s for example. Just listen to any epic megagames' game that takes advantage to mod music (Epic Pinball, Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall 2097, Unreal, Unreal Tournament ...) and you shouldn't be disappointed at all (though it's not the kind of music you'll find on a Final Fantasy game ... but I'm pretty sure that mod music could have been used to create other genres of music than what it was mostly used)
