To this day, I am convinced that Square did not playtest this minigame properly, or the general controls for the Chocobos period. It's where at least 75% of the frustration comes in when you can't control the bird like you think you should be able to. The other 25% is the bullshit you experienced with the spawning birds and blitzballs...but all the same, congrats on working through it. Such a nightmare of a minigame. :p

YESSSSSSSSSSS I JUST DID IT!!! I got so lucky, I have no idea how I was able to dodge all birds, but managed to win with 13 ballons, no birds and around 35 seconds (approx. the score screen disappeared) so so so so happy! finally, the inner 12yr old can rest in peace.

Thought I would help you anyone who is struggling with the race. You will still need to attempt it a few times though but this might make things easier. First thing, 1). Use the directional buttons to control the chocobo. Only the left and the right directional button, nothing else. 2). At the start of the race, don't go for balloons closer to the trainer. If you don't get at least 3 balloons at the first straight, the rest of the race will be tough. 3). Try to stay to the left after the first turn. There is more room to manouver on that side. 4). Stay to the right hand side when you get to the final straight 5). Try to finish the race in under 36 seconds no matter how many balloons you get 6). Pray to the god of luck before each race. Withoutht this god on your side, you will fail miserably

From my girlfriend: I first rented this game from Blockbuster when i was 12 and i fell in love. I also had a very large late fee because i didn't want to give it back. for anyone watching this in the future, if your time did not end with a .0 place (ie.e 0:35.0) and the seconds digits wasn't a multiple of 3 (0,3,6,9) and it says your ending time is a 0:0.0, you did it. it's actually very hard to hit exactly 0:0.0, since the balloons only shave 3 seconds off. just to try to save people from heart attacks...

I've been playing through the remaster and watching your playlist at the same time. It's been a lot of fun! I just did this and it's just as frustrating as I remember it being from the original version. The rng on the balloon spawns is so brutal. Some attempts are totally unwinnable. After 30 minutes or so I got a super lucky run with 12 balloons, 0 bird hits, and a finish time of 35.8 seconds. That's only 0.2 seconds away from ultimate heartbreak. Good job getting a better time than I managed.

I got the get all celestial weapons trophy and the 0 across the board trophy, but not the sun sigil. After 5/6 more hours i give up since i dont need it for my plat trophy and i upgraded every weapon besides Tidus ofc and max out every character. So my team for dark eaons (however you write it) is Rikki, Auron and Wakka, instead of Tidus, Rikki and Wakka. Everyone online says that is the best team but this minigame pisses me off too much, so i am effing done with it. P.s i do like your work, keel up the great work ❤

It's really hard, but not impossible. I'm pretty bad at games that require reflexes and control and I managed to do this last night - after a total of probably 4 hours over the span of a week. It is infuriating, so I only tried for a brief amount of time every evening so I didn't smash my husband's controller. It's pretty much like dansg0 says; Seize the runs where the balloons line up on your end, and try to get as many down that ramp as possible. Getting hit by one bird near the end is better then at the start since they're harder to avoid as you gather the final balloons. I did it with 14 balloons, 1 bird, and a time of about 37 secs. Honestly, it's just as much about luck as it is skill/control.

After not playing this game for many years I'm now doing this mini game for my daughter as she's starting to work her way through the FF series (well starting from XII), and I'm right back where I was playing this annoying mini game years ago (bar less swearing), first go saw a time of 35.something seconds and 11 balloons with no birds, and it's just carrying on I'n a similar vein. For anyone else that needs this info, gently tap on the d-pad, it gives better control when you’re trying to straighten out the chocobo. The birds will attack in pairs and in a pattern.The first pair will go to the trainer so you have a few seconds to collect balloons before dodging the second pair of birds. This will continue throughout the race so pay attention. The first turn try to center the bird in the middle so it’s easier to dodge. This has helped me improve so much…. I honestly searched KZbin and the internet for information on how to beat this stupid game and I swear I wanted to throw my controller at the tv after so many failed attempts. These tips motivated me to keep trying.

I know this probably won't help many people now, but there's an easy way to do the hyper dodge race. Look at where the ball is going, go the exact opposite direction until the bird goes past you. So if the ball is going left, hold right until the bird goes past you, then notice the ball going right, hold left when you see it, etc. Helped me get it after a while with a time of 15.9 sec. O.o

If you are watching this and do not understand how to control the chocobo, make sure you are TAPPING the directional buttons. Do not use the analog stick and definitely do NOT hold the buttons down. That makes your chocobo lose its mind. This mini-game is one of the most sadistic things in gaming and I really hope if they ever remaster X again, they patch it. Because this is awful game design.

I got it in maybe 10 frustrating attempts. Seems like I was really lucky. My strat was hoping for lucky first balloons, then when the camera changes go to the left to waste some time and let her in front of you, then use her as a shield to cross immediately back to the right. She almost always gets hit and once one of the birds hits a target the other ones of the group disappear. Then you have to hope for a good line of balloons on the right, only adjust slightly so the chocobo can't bring you out of line too much. Then after the camera changes for the last time, try to stay as middle as possible for the least chocobo randomness. I got a 35.7 with 2 birds and 14 balloons. In the end it''s really the balloon placement that you need to get and that is just luck.

One thing I learned about this after two months, and getting a turbo controller... (Even though the buttons won't help you, the steering is MUCH more controlled with a turbo controller. I couldn't believe how much smoother my turns were with it.) Is that yes, there is a pattern... The biggest thing I learned is that the balloons are a forget about it when you're close to the birds attacking. Don't be greedy and grab more than one or two depending on how close they are together and even use the invisible walls to slingshot back on course. Only grab them RIGHT AFTER the birds attack you, not before or you'll be in danger of being hit. It does rely A LOT on luck, but I managed after figuring out this pattern to get the sigil in an hour with 34.7 seconds, 12 balloons and no birds.

finally got it omg!!! 16 balloons, 3 birds. for any pointers i could give, you need at minimum 3 at the start, if it’s favoring the other chocobo, just let yours go straight so that’s more runs you can salvage, you’ll be faster the less inputs you make(probably already figured out) also try and line yourself with balloons to pick up in a row in combo with not making any inputs(this will also make you go left or right randomly 100%) gl

Actually you only need 60 I believe, and you can craft your own break damage limit weapon for Tidus instead of needing the fully upgraded Caladbolg. Probably the way I'll need to go I can't beat 0.0 seconds to save my life.

A little advice from a semi pro at this game, I've done about 17 playthroughs and have gotten this weapon every play through. First it's a bit of luck, you wanna get the start where there are 4 ballons on your side at start. You wanna be in front of her at the corner and stay on the right side, its less ballons but it's far easier to dodge birds. After the first set of birds move left towards inside, after second set move back right. I would usually have between 7-9 ballons before the final stretch. Final stretch is a bit tricky because the invisible in game walls are smaller so the chocobo will turn by itself and can cause you to miss a lot. I usually stay on the far right after the turn and use small but hard turns to make it more evasive. I can usually do it in about 5 attempts. You have to stay in front of the trainer after first turn, don't try and run her down (If you're in front of her the birds are easier to dodge and usually fly behind you at the end of long stretch when they come from above you). If she is in front of you expect to hit more birds. Takes a bit of practice but once you figure it out it's easy

As I said in the video, if you can get that close I'm sure you can make it. Take a little break and then try it again, you have the "skill" needed to get the balloons and dodge the birds, all you need is the right arrangement to get it. Keep trying!

Maybe you're right, I've never heard anyone pronounce it out loud before so I just read it the way it looked on the screen. That's how I've always done it :) I think I mention it during the playthrough, but it's weird how a lot of words are only ever said out loud when you do a commentary playthrough. I've never discussed FFX verbally with anyone in that detail before so this playthrough was the first time I ever had to say names like Caladbolg out loud :)

I also had the strategy guide, since I didn't have internet, so that's probably how I even knew to do the chocobo training in the first place. I am a big fan of Final Fantasy X, but I hate some of the mini games! I enjoy a challenging game, but annoying and frustrating is not fun! When I first played this on the PS2, ONE time, I got 0:00.3. Lightning dodge has a very simple tactic to beat. There's a crater that spawns a bolt so you know when to dodge. Just need no encounters

Beating one eye is easy to do before he even gets a turn. Use wakkas overdrive or just summon Anima.

I hate getting the celestial weapon for Titus. I did it once after hours of trying and I got game over afterwards without saving before hand. Well, no celestial weapon for you.. Titus..stupid minigame...

Best chocobo tip. Learn the spawns fir the birds then aim for 30-45 degree diagonal from the spawn. Thats how they miss you. That and tap the d pad l and r for more precise turning. Also keep in mind you need to stay going forward thats where the angles become important. Also, goes without saying, "stay in front of the trainer!"

I always start trying to get the celestial weapons, then i get to a point where it requires me to do this chocobo racing, and i get so annoyed that i just want to break the computer and end up giving up playing the rest of the game/side quests haha there has to be an easier way to complete this! Even just watching you in the video reminds me of the frustration trying to do it myself lol! Wish I could send you my save to do it for me haha! Thank you for all the amazing videos :)

Fun fact: If you hold down L1, L2, R1 and R2 while training the Chocobos you can control them a tiny bit easier. But it still helps.

They Don't respawn too quickly, the problem is when you get that close you're actually CLOSER to the spawn zone where they come from, so when they spawn there they're getting to you faster instead of when you're further back due to the fact they're closer.

I am amazed you did this in minutes. I hate this mini-game and the chocobo race at the hidden temple. I was able to do it on the PS2 but never yet on the HD Remaster. Seems like controls are worse on the remaster. It is very frustrating.

Might be helpful for some. I was able to beat this in about an hour time. The method I kept repeatedly thinking in my head was to go for sets of 4 balloons in each stretch. There are 3 main parts, so it should be relatively easy to get 12. You may pick up an extra balloon here and there during any of the 3 stretches. The focus should be placed more on dodging the birds than the balloons.

I got super lucky a few days ago when I went back and tried this. 35.9 seconds 12 balloons and no hits. Took about 30 minutes. Many many years ago when I’ve played through the game I’d sit here for hours on end. Days in a row. Raged quit so many times in the past haha

Dan on the hyper Dodger you can push r2 and change the camera angle. It makes the training easier

lol took me like an hour to beat this and I listened to your vid while playing and won on my next race after you just won in the vid. All the balloons spawned on my side in the start of the race. 17-1.

I'll never understand how they went from the best chocobo sidequest hands down with FFIX's chocobo hot and cold to the chocobo racing in FFX where you can't completely control the chocobo (sometimes it goes in the opposite direction). You can control the chocobo completely when just riding outside of the trainer stuff but then you can't in the races. It takes me forever to get the sigil. I would actually pay $500 or $1000 for a 4K remastered (not remake, just 4K remaster with additions) FFX/FFX-2 where you can upgrade the chocobo and ultimately get the flying ability. Imagine actually flying on a chocobo all over Spira with 4K graphics, I would pay $1000 for that version!
