This is why Wakka is so important of a character. He is a Yevonite: a devout follower bordering on zealotry. He represents so much in Spira: kindness and bigotry wrapped up in one person. Yet, he grows and changes with each revelation. Rather than losing himself, he learns, eventually accepts the changes, and changes himself; he becomes a better person. He is the old world, coming to terms with the new. He even helps usher it in.

He is a well written charachter. He is a very realistic charachter. Raised with certain believes, and gets angry when something contradicts his beliefs. But he learns and adapts, not perfectly, he is so human. A very well written charachter.

Later in the game Wakka apoligises to the Al Bhed. then Cid says a line that i hold to this day when i see different races. "there are all kind of people in this world..some of them good some of them bad" it shows you can't lable a whole race for what a few do. videogames can have the best advice you can learn anywhere.

Wakka has no idea about their eyes. If he did, he would have questioned Auron about it when Auron asked to see Rikku's eyes. But he didn't, and likely just thought "Auron be pulling some sage wisdom shit looking into her eyes to see if she's worthy." because, I mean, none of them really dared to question Auron's experience since he was a VERY renowned guardian.

Yevon (the religion) convinced spira that sin existed because of their actions, their 'sins', and only the entire world being fully 'attoned' would end it. All a lie, as Yunalesca revealed later in telling them "could humanity ever reach such purity" more or less mocking them, showing it was all a fraud. That was the breaking point for people like Lulu and wakka.

Yu Yevon created Sin to preserve Zanarkand, get revenge on Bevelle, and to oppress/control the people of Spira by destroying any large settlements/halting technological advancement. Sin wasn't "born" from lack of atonement. Sin is just a personification of oppression and denial. Yu Yevon refused to accept Zanarkand being destroyed. Had nothing to do with atoning for past mistakes: that was a false pretense for Yevon to control Spira, if you paid attention at all to the story. Wakka even admitted he was wrong himself.

There is a lot more to it than that. The Al Bhed were low class factory workers who made machina in order to keep up in a world run by mages(anyone who could not use magic was seen as a second-class citizen). Eventually Bevelle caught on what they were doing and on the threat of execution, they comissioned them to build weapons for them. Naturally when Sin showed up, the Al Bhed were blamed for it.

It’s inconsistent. Rikku & Wakka are pretty excellent because both characters could easily be super unlikable. A lot of other characters are well-cast but poorly directed
