The fact that they're forcing themselves to laugh on purpose here, which is why it sounds horrible. They're acknowledging that their lives suck and are difficult, so they're forcing themselves to laugh and smile to try and cope with it, and in doing so they laugh at how stupid they sound fake laughing. It was them trying to get over their sadness by doing this, so I'd say it's pretty great.

@@theBlankScroll The context is trying to find a way to be happy and hopeful when things look grim. When they first started trying to laugh, it sound weird because laughs were forced and artificial. After that, they just started laughing naturally at themselves and found a short moment of happiness. The development team knew it was awkward and they continued to make fun of them by getting the crew to check to see if they were going crazy. The context of the scene is to show some since of weirdness but through that weirdness, they found a way to be happy. The scene was great because of it. It was deliberate and calculated.

2:35 is all the defense this scene needs. You can clearly hear how naturally both VAs laugh. Literally the entire POINT of the scene is how stupid it is to force a laugh when you're sad, but that even given the circumstances, Yuna and Tidus are just so naturally happy together that even in the most contrived and ridiculous of situations they still enjoy their time together... Like, I'm not gonna go to bat to the ends of the earth for this scene, if you're just determined to hate it then cool, you do you, but in context and actually understanding what's happening instead of just leaping on some meme train of people who never properly played the game, you can't deny there's no substance at all.

I love this scene. It’s actually pretty insightful into how someone like Yuna, who knows she is on a suicide mission, could possibly cope. A big thing about ffx is that Yuna and Tidus teach other, pick up each other’s way of thinking, and balance each other. Yuna starts out too ready to give her life away and Tidus doesn’t get it at all. In the end, Tidus sacrifices himself so Yuna and Spira can live without sin. Yuna learned to think more for herself and treat her life with value, something that can’t just be given away without all options exhausted. It’s in this moment that they help each other get through the moment and continue onward.
@davidyoung29903 жыл бұрын
Yes true but IIRC in this scene Tidus still doesn’t know what Yuna’s fate is meant to be. The audience don’t know either. It’s only when we return to the scene a second time that we understand the depth in it. I suppose that’s why the internet managed a cheap shot on it.

A lot of people seem to slag off this scene, even Charley Brooker, all I can assume is they either didn't play the game or missed what was going on. Tidus has been taken away from his friends, his family, literally everyone he knows except Auron, to a world with completely different customs and ideals. Where he is used to being famous and living a life of success and excess, now he is in a world of tradition and patience where he doesn't fit in and everyone thinks he's crazy whenever he talks about his hometown and who he is. He even has to lie to avoid attracting suspicion. The people he is with, he feels like he's getting in their way and has only stayed because he might be able to find someone he knows in Luca (where they are). The one and only thing he would be glad to leave behind is forever being in his father's shadow but Jecht is famous here too, and what's more, everybody loves him, one of the reason's he resents his father. And he has only minutes before this scene found out Jecht is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians for reasons he can't understand logically but knows to be true emotionally. Further, his father is Sin and will therefore be at the end of the journey that he is only going on because what else is there for him to do, and if they make it, he will have to confront his father, and he will have to kill him. He's in a bad place and this is the very first time Yuna, who appears to be one-dimensionally nice up until this point, opens up with him a small bit. The laughing is awkward because it's meant to be, it's about keeping your chin up even when there is no hope, something that neither of them truly have at the moment, but pretend to. And for Yuna, out of 1000 years of people trying to complete the pilgrimage, five have made it meaning Yuna is most likely going to fail. She's also living in her father's shadow so there's even more pressure on her, so she cannot give up. And if she can't give up, either she'll die on the way to fighting sin, or defeating it will kill her, so she's going to die either way which is one of the reasons she's not opened up to Tidus before, she can't get close to him. There's a lot more going on in this scene than on the surface and it is full of subtext and foreshadowing. It's a great scene, if a little cheesy.

***** Maybe the scene could be different, but it works fine as it is. It's supposed to be quite innocent and the laughing fills that, anything more serious and it's not Final Fantasy anymore. I admit, out of context it's a silly scene, but you could probably say that about any scene from FF, they're all pretty adolescent, none of them are particularly adult. But that's why I like FF, it bridged the gap for me between kids stuff to the more complicated, emotionally and mentally intelligent things so it's always going to have a place in my heart, this scene included.
@KingCollossuss9 жыл бұрын
***** Also I didn't see you comment about an impromptu date. That wouldn't fit in, Tidus is a very down at this point, the last thing he would want to do is go on a date. He has previously just shouted randomly to deal with everything but he says himself, at this point, even shouting isn't going to help. He's seriously low, part of his purposely bad laughing is like an FU to the world for putting him in such a bad position, one of the reason's Yuna joins in, she can relate to that. Yuna on the other hand would never go on a date with Tidus at this point, or anyone else. She is determined to complete the pilgrimage, she values helping others far more than herself and would never compromise her ability to complete her pilgrimage just to go out with someone she just met. She wouldn't want to hurt Tidus either, she knows she's going to die, she tries not to think about it too much but it is clearly weighing on her mind throughout the game once you play it through a second time. Yuna has a lot of self-determination and it is only after everything goes to pot in Macalania and Bevelle that the cracks really start to show and she gives in to her feelings for Tidus. She wouldn't just give in at this point because she's got the hots for him.

But Tidus starts out as the very opposite to that, as he's quite talkative, rather whimsical and bragging. Though I really don't get the hate either, I mean, he's literally a kid who landed into an unknown world and people expect him to act like a wise monk. It's a broken game. & Final Fantasy is slightly slipping because their leveling system isn't always consistent such as FF XIII taking butt loads of crystarium. another 1000 battles in comparison to 10 just for one upgrade (that's how grindy it felt to me). FF & COD are both going up hill & downhill. in the end, as long as they make us happy, then it's a good game/franchise to will go up hill in our hearts.

CoD is terrible because people are quick scoping & rage when getting killed by a sniper the correct way XD & FF isn't all, downhill. story is okay but game could be better with leveling. Thats why X, XII, VII & VIII are the best in my heart. & KH is epic full stop
People can be so cynical sometimes. Yeah, this is an awkward scene, but it's actually supposed to be awkward. Their laughter is fake, they pretend not to care, but they actually do. There is nothing funny about Yuna's journey, that's why there is no way it will be "full of laughter". Yuna knows that, but she laughs anyway, because pretending to be strong is easier that way. It's a cute scene, it's somewhat awkward, but that's exactly the point.

This is a rare scene where the cringe was intentional and can actually have a practical purpose. 😂 This scene showed me that if I am feeling sad or depressed about something, I will force myself to laugh even if it doesn't seem natural or normal at the time. I may look stupid in the process...but if I can be happy again, it's so worth it! Then maybe I can begin to laugh wholeheartedly again like before. 😇

The Fact that this scene became a stable on the internet for countless content creators is a Blessing on its own. We tend to remember the Very dark and gloomy ones. We forget about uplifting ones like this. This is about giving a message. That it's okay to not feel okay.

It means they did something right since it's remembered and those who play know the lore behind the scene as it's explained the world is in a great depression because of Sin and Yuna has to be the beacon of light that she's been practiced to never cry or being sad.

Ignoring the infamous voice acting, this scene was meant to be awkward. The laughter at the end was more genuine and wasn't forced.

I was having a bad moment a couple days ago, where I was easily upset over something others would probably find trivial. I let out a noise of frustration to try to keep myself from crying and my boyfriend, whom has never played this game before, asked if I wanted to scream, we could scream together (he had no idea how to help me feel better and tried to work with what I was doing to express myself). FFX is my favorite game, and holds a special place in my heart. I was instantly reminded of Yuna’s question when he asked me that, as well as the rest of this scene, and instantly started crying. Both because of the earlier incident and also because of just how similar the situation felt. He was so concerned for me, and only got confused as I tried to explain this whole scene to him. But it helped me feel so much better

I was around 13, playing this game when it was new, and I think it was the first time I felt embarrassed to play a game. My mom was walking through the living room during this and I felt compelled to turn it down or cover the screen, like I was watching a steamy sex scene or something. I still get a little self conscious, watching this stupid scene.

Oh man, I'm STILL afraid that my parents will walk in when I have to visit one of those Great fairies in Ocarina of time. '-' It's bad enough for a player to endure this stupid crap, but now with an out-of-touch parent thrown in? Yeesh.

If you wish to fully appreciate the context behind this, it's really worth it to come back to this scene after beating the game. FFX is a game well worth playing through twice: first time as a newbie, and the second applying what you learned from the first.

You guys don't get it. This was the FIRST time they had "serious" 3D facial animations in a game. It was a HUGE deal back then. This scene was all about showing off their technology, with the smiling people and such. I remember being blown away at age 15 by this.
@yellowcard19333 жыл бұрын
Never understood why this scene receives the disparagement that it does. The way Yuna explains how they are Spiras only hope and that she's learned to smile and laugh even when she's sad. Then she teaches Tidus how to do the same. Just like he taught her to whistle. They laugh together and it sounds fake because it is. Eventually it turns to real laughter and joy. Guess you could say they both got pretty good at it. I will say I'm biased. I love this game to pieces and it's heavy with nostalgia for me so it's difficult for me to find fault with anything In this game.

Looking back as I play the HD version... This scene is still one of the most memorable scenes I think of when I think of Final Fantasy X, remembering to smile and have fun in times of stress is always so important and even though this is only a video game, it had a great meaning to me when I first played it. You don't see games like this anymore...

Its so strange going back to this scene realize the laughter is supposed sound canned and forced because he's forcing it at her request to let go of his frustration and dour mood after the revelation about Sin. It's really taken out of context when people bring it up as bad voice acting, when it's not, especially on how they both start laughing normally afterwards at how ridiculous they sounded.

I know the feeling, of suffering inside. From physical abuse, that led to addictions. I know the feeling of wanting to scream, from my insides dying and decaying. But I also know the feeling of having to put on a fake smile, to hiding it inside, of not worrying those on the outside of that abuse. Of those who didn't know. I know the feeling of everything on the outside, being the opposite of what I was really going through. But maybe..Just maybe..This scene taught me something special, that many others will never be able to grasp. I learned to push through it.. *tears every time* Thank you..
