I really like the scene where tifa basically asked cloud on a date and even asked him to wear matching clothes to which cloud blatantly agrees immediately. To other character, when female character tries to flirt or even so much as to ask cloud for a date or call him 'my hero', clouds just just sigh/stare away/call them desperate. Yet for tifa, he is doing a lot of the subtle flirting himself lmao. Like giving her flowers, saying 'beautiful' while staring at her and making her blush, trying to impress her and play nice when he asks him to, plays hero and hugs her down the train. Not to mention the little jealous scene where the merchant says if cloud ever need a replacement as tifa's debt collector, he can always fill in to which cloud disgustedly says "in your dreams!". They even have a theme song which plays everytime they seemingly starts getting affectionate to each other. Plus, Cloud is an outcast and very distant but he is willing to do everything outside his comfort zone for tifa like making an effort of being more social/nice to people when tifa asked him to, help avalanche multiple times despite saying it's just for money, offer to help tifa get money for free even if she still owes him, refusing to leave even after he gets his money because tifa was in a 'tight situation', agree to crossdress to help tifa from Don corneo. Tifa is the first and only girl cloud has ever tried to flirt willingly lmao

A major reason: The aestetics. Nomura's designs are just my cup of tea.

Young'uns may ship Clerith because it's cutesy, but when I saw how Tifa took care of Cloud in Mideel, that just sealed the cake. @@daeith1233 In AC, cloud just feels guilty about what had happened to aierith. He blames himself for her death and feels as if he could have prevented it. Plus he had the sickness of geostigma, so he could have felt like he didn't want to infect them. It's the typical "If I'm alone, no one else I care about will get hurt." mindset. Tifa wanted to show Cloud that this wasn't the case, but he was blinded by guilt. Tifa was the only one who knew that Cloud had fake memories during the events of the original FF7, yet she still stuck by his side and his whole reason to get into the SOLDIER program was to get stronger so that Tifa wouldn't get hurt again. Plus, Tifa is mentally older than Cloud, as Cloud lost about 5 years of his life due to being in a comatose state at shinra, so mentally, he's still an edgy teenager going through the motions of learning how to deal with emotion.

The scene in the gardens was absolutely heart wrenching and beautiful. I remember seeing it for the first time, Tifa starting to tear up, and then she just winds up crying into Cloud’s chest and all I can think is “Hug her you idiot!” and when he finally does my heart just melts. It’s such a powerful, touching moment between them that shows how much Tifa trusts Cloud, and how easily Cloud’s walls are torn down around Tifa. The two just make each other better.

Tifa’s the reason why he wanted to be in soldier in the first place anyway. Cloud had a crush on Tifa even way before they were kids and promised her that he would come back stronger just so he could protect her. It is also obvious in Crisis Core how canon their ship is when he saved her from Sephiroth. And also from the book, They started living together like family adopting Marlene and Denzel. He only left because he still felt guilty from Aerith’s death and was afraid he couldn’t protect anyone anymore. But it ended in Advent Children with him smiling at Tifa after letting go of his guilt. Aerith was there with Zack assuring him that everything will be alright. (And Aerith and Zack acts like Cloud is their adoptive son in Advent children with the way they talked in the movie) atleast that’s how I portrayed everything until suddenly a lot of people played the game shipping who on who.

The subtext of that drink scene just hit me: The first drink he asks for, something bitter--his request is basically for a drink that is like himself. It's even yellow to match his most vivid color--his blonde hair. The drink is an obectal correlative for Cloud's emotions--but also, just for Cloud himself. The second drink Tifa gives him when the first doesn't impress him is the house special--it probably reflects her preferences more than any other drink on offer, and in so doing it reflects *her*. This is made even more clear given the fact that its coloration matches *Tifa's* most vivid color: the red from her arm-plates and her eyes. It's an objectal correlative for Tifa. When Cloud calls the second drink 'beautiful', he holds it up in his line of sight, putting it between himself and Tifa, looking at her through it. Overlaying Tifa's objectal correlative and Tifa herself. Both are beautiful.

Kingdom Hearts 1 for example, Nomura vaguely tells what was Cloud and Aerith’s relationship, his interview wasn’t even a definite answer, he just lets the people decide what it is, but the thing is in KH1 it seems Cloud was looking for someone and Aerith just happens to be ther, it wasn’t even disclosed Cloud was looking for her but Cleriths find this as a cannonical proof their ship is sailing - and here comes Kingdom Hearts 2, it was already implied the one Cloud who was looking for is Sephiroth all along and Tifa is his light. Still, most if not all Cleriths choose to ignore this and holds on tightly on Nomura’s very old interview and KH1. For crying out loud they even made Crisis Core and even brought Zack back to life - as if that is not enough proof which couple SE is preferring more.

Many people say that it was Aerith's actions that softened Cloud's heart. And after playing through the game many times, I realized that's just not true. During the Jesse mission, the flashback with Tifa on the tower was what softened him up. That's when he started becoming his old self and started to care about other people. Aerith included. If Cloud hadn't softened up by the time he fell through the roof, he would have just shrugged off Aerith's bodyguard shenanigans and asked to be paid in gil.

Briana White (Aerith's VA) shipped Cloud and Aerith at first. But then, after she voiced and played Crisis Core Reunion, she changed course and fully became Zack and Aerith shipper. Agreed. What I find interesting is that Square Enix seems to be trying to acclimatize Clerith shippers to this. SE has already made it clear that they themselves prefer the Cloti and Zerith ships, judging from statements made repeatedly in the Ultimanias and developer interviews (see user Squall_of_SEEDs analysis of the Love Tirangle Debate on thelifestream.net for more detail). The devs seem to have taken this acclimatizing approach to narrative design as well, because ALL THREE versions of the scene in Chapter 14 of Remake could theoretically be canon--Cloud first dreams about Aerith meeting him in the garden and so wakes up, then goes out to that same garden and sees Tifa, whom he comforts as she cries over the loss of Sector 7, and then as she goes back inside to get some sleep, Cloud hangs back for a few moments just to chat with Barret and reconcile over their prior hostilities.

I feel like Aerith balances Cloud’s personality very well since she’s more flirty and extroverted. I won’t be surprised if he had a crush on her. And I say crush because they only spent like, 2 days together Their relationship is like, a dreamy, cute, delightful, almost perfect, illusion but ephemeral. Reminds me of animes. Whereas Tifa and Cloud’s relationship, is more realistic, feels more natural tends to focus on the real world and its events, not always happy, it has ups and downs, joy and tears just like any couple in real life. At the end, it’s up to the player to choose how to interpret these relationships. For me, I’d go with Cloud and Tifa. Not only because realism works well with me, but also because their relationship was build up from the start with so many events, and yet they’re still here, standing strong and caring for each other. They are both similar which might be boring in a relationship, but that’s what appeals to me. And their back story has so much impact, it makes their relationship endearing. EDIT : It seems to me that in the game, Aerith is more pushing Cloud and Tifa together than thinking about Cloud lol. Cloud and Tifa just feels right to me.

It's been actually even stated that Tifa is the only one who Cloud truly opens his heart to. He might've had casual chit chat with Aerith (and that was his SOLDIER persona), but that's pretty much it. He had a lot more meaningful topics with Tifa, but also flirting and having fun too. It's funny how Nojima truly has written things more obvious between them and there's not even close so much players preferences and choises.

@@Daraptii First not Clerith but i guess you would say that. Second she didn’t rejoin him, there’s a book describing the events of AC and nothing says about Aerith rejoining Zack. Actually there’s a credit scene where Aerith is still watching Cloud. Finally you have a book, prequel to AC, wrote by Nojima called Cloud as Aerith’s lover. So let me ask the cloti fanclub, what did you think about Cloud and Tifa not ending together and them being called only “friends” in DOC?

@@Daraptii Case of the lifestream is the name of the book. No they were shown infront of Cloud as to remind him to keep on living lol not about them walking out together. If we are being true to the lore, Zack would have fused with the lifestream however due to Aerith having the ancients’ powers, she could not fuse until she wants to. True every ship creates stuff out of thin air to prove something that isn’t there. Case in point; the thing you said about Advent Children. Or this OG comment

There is another brief moment in the maintenance hangar of the train graveyard, after the scene where Tifa gets annoyed that Cloud only asked Aerith if she was okay. After the ghost almost drops the train on top of them, Cloud turns to Tifa first this time to ask if she's okay and she smiles.

Plus if Tifa dies the huge backlash that SE will get would be insane, it will just cause “shock value” and honestly would be just bad writing. also, how will Cloud regain his memories without Tifa? There’s a lot of great symbolism and artistic exhibition in this game. It’s such a rare treat these days. Like, at the very beginning of the game when they’re playing the opening theme, but the subtle hits of One-Winged Angel playing just beneath the surface was excellent foreshadowing for the tone of the game.

Miranda Lawson Not to mention Cloud and Tifa’s relationship is, in a way, the backbone of this whole story too. She’s the reason he did anything and the reason he found himself later in the story. She’s also the person who helped him with his depression in Advent Children. Man, their story is so engrossing. I am so glad it’s so evident in the Remake, I can’t wait for part 2.

42:57 Honestly, I’m with aerith on this one. Tifa and Cloud are simply meant to be, it was fate that brought them together and no matter how far or how different things may be in the universe. They find each other. Cloud can watch and despair over Zack and Aerith, fight sepiroth or prevent the coming of meteor. But in the end, Tifa was always there. When he lost himself, when he needed to cry and when he needed some comfort at the end of the world. Tifa would always be there. In this scene, this one small scene, the music. It feels as if over decades of tension and hand grasping close calls are finally over. Cloud, at the start of this new time within the remake. Finally hugs and comforts Tifa when she needed it most, showing the boy who promised her to be a hero. A promised fulfilled time and time again as this story progresses. When the final ending comes to this series, it should end with cloud finally kissing the girl who sat with him on the water tower. The war is over soldier, its time to come home to her.

And _Oh_ god when Tifa cries..nothing to do with the voice-acting at this point, but for the majority of the game, when alone, Cloud and Tifa had been speaking to each other with some amount of deliberate, compositional emphasis on the distance between them: at the bar, in Tifa's apartment, in Cloud's apartment...Then the plates fall, and the first moment Cloud and Tifa have alone together she closes the distance between them, head down and fists balled, eyes already shrink-wrapped with tears. And she lets out the _deepest_ pain--pain that's probably been welling up inside her for who knows how long now. Pain that's all come to ahead with her home destroyed, again. And Cloud doesn't know what to do. Words fail him. He can't attack her troubles with a sword. He feels utterly helpless. So what does he do? He hugs her. He hugs her tight, tighter than anyone's ever hugged her, and even _that_ hurts her too. Damn. It's such a good established progression to show how far they've come and how far they have left to go in order to fully understand each other's feelings.

That was the best scene aside from the train. The metaphorical distance and physical distance closes. Sure, Cloud is still an awkward dork who doesn't know how to comfort anyone, but he tried. You could see the struggle on his face as he thought of things to say, almost spoke, then rejected them and stayed silent. Tifa's been strong and alone this entire time. She's had no one who knows exactly how she feels and then Cloud returns and she's so happy he's there, that she has someone to rely on and trust. I really hope they're still endgame and Square doesn't change the Mideel section even if they make Aerith live.

You nailed it. I don't think she was really "hurt" by the intensity of his grip as much as she was surprised at his momentary ability to overcome the layers of bullshit his personality is armored in. Her immediate reaction is to thank him for the comfort. Because she knows that unlike all the heroic theatrics his psyche lives and dies on - showing tenderness is actually what is hard for him. Can't wait for the rest of this to play out. Tifa is one of my favorite fictional characters ever. I'd be totally fine if they make her the lead for all of the 3rd game (assuming they make 4).

For me, Aerith is the only person who cares about those two pairs relationship better than anyone else, without having to be so blunt with it. Maybe it just me, I always see her as a person who is always very thoughtful and aware of everything around her, that always seems to be covered by her cheerful personality. That's why sometimes she's unpredictable. When she died in the original version I screamed why, but i only have myself to blame for feeling not doing good enough protecting her. I still can't forget that smile before Sephirot end her lives tragically, as if it says "it'll be alright." Very sad..

fiprosha I agree with you even if I do prefer cloud and tifa’s relationship more. to be honest SE made it very clear that cloud has affection for both women, and that’s the point of the love triangle it’s kinda supposed to mirror how real life is. There isn’t one person that you like and you end up with, sometimes it gets complicated down the road, and in cloud’s case, the love triangle. Personally I just prefer cloud and tifa’s relationship because I mean there is no denying that he did like her as a child and true feelings can change but as you said before it’s really up to what the player’s choice is. To me, even after all that time, and making a promise I just don’t think feelings like that go away easily. I really do like Aerith as a character but I think the main reason why both Aerith and Cloud was attracted to each other to begin with was because partially Cloud adopted Zack’s persona and I just think there is no denying that this is the reason for their initial attraction to each other, BUT however as the story does progress I do think Aerith does like Cloud for more than just because he reminds her of Zack. I don’t know it’s really up to you and what you think but I just ship Tifa and Cloud more, but respects to my sis Aerith🤝
