Although few gamers do, you want to connect to the game. Rather than just thinking "entertainment", you want to connect the game to your life. Your experiences and how it relates to you. If it doesn't, still, you want to feel the characters and the story. Place yourself in with the characters and feel what they feel. When you do, at the end of the game, no matter what ending, you feel like you accomplished something. And if a sequel is coming, then you will be anxious and eager to get the next.

When you play a game, what you're suppose to look at is the story, whether or not you feel something from it, the character development, how the designers chose their characters, and whether the game benefits from it, the complexity or whether history is used in the game. Finally, the gameplay itself, totaling out the fun, sound, art, and effects the game gives. Then at the end, you look at the adventures you had, and the message the game gives out. Usually, a game has that kind of message.

That does not take away from the fact that you still evaluate everything it has to offer and not evaluate it on just having boring gameplay or a meaningless story. Hey now, emulators ain't so bad. It's cool to see older games being enhanced with higher resolutions/frame rates, widescreen hacks, that crazy perspective correction for PS1 textures, etc. A lot of neat stuff going on there. But there's always something endearing about seeing the real thing on its original platform, for better or worse--kinda makes ya appreciate what was being accomplished back then. 👍

@Tinhh Not to mention it's about Basch proving his innocence and showing his loyalty to his kingdom. I read somewhere that HE was supposed to be the real main character, and that Vaan was just there so that younger players could have someone to "relate" to. Go figure. Seriously--you could remove Vaan from the game and no one would notice the difference. I also agree on the story's pacing. It's got some interesting elements, but I gotta do so much grinding that I totally forget what's going on.

Well, I must be playing the "wrong" kind of RPGs, then, 'cause all the ones I've played have always had engaging storylines, as well as top-notch gameplay. Now don't get me wrong--I completely understand that, at the end of the day, it's the gameplay that's most important (a game's no fun if it isn't fun to play), regardless of the genre, but sometimes a good plot helps keep things interesting. Without that, this game's still somewhat fun, but it's no Monster Hunter, that's for sure.

This is a single player game. The character you selected as your leader is the one you're gonna control. You can choose any of the characters to be your leader, while the rest will be react automatically based on how you set the Gambit system. How the system work is for example, your leader targets this mob, the rest will start hitting it. Or if a character's health drops below say 30%, they will automatically use cure or potion on them.

I liked 3, 7, and 8 but 10 was just a life changer for me those were the only 1s i beat and i still have a demo of this game from dragon quest 8. i have over 100 hours and my most recent playthrough from 10 tho and need a different game to play. wondering if i should even touch it at this point

Eh, I think I've had enough of the usual JRPG-caliber drama in FFs as it is. I actually quite liked the intrigue/political/espionage type of story and setting they were kind of going for here--I just don't think it was executed too well. And they didn't really take enough time to flesh out the characters' personalities--it's mostly "Point A to Point B," y'know?

+t rex Hence "PLATINUM DEMO" it is a tech demo after all which they wanted to show us about the day and night settings,changing the weather mechanics and whole lot of other technical stuffs that are going to be available in the final game. Square Enix also said the final game is going to have two battle systems that can be toggled. Episode Duscae had the "hard mode" battle system while it seems the Platinum Demo has the "easy mode" battle system. The final game is supposed to have both. at the end,if you dont like this game then dont buy it. because it is not the usual turn based systems? go buy other jrpgs then.smh

While I absolutely loved FF12's gameplay and can't for the life of me understand people who don't, I can forget all that and recommend Lost Odyssey. It's got the traditional battle system but also plays similar to FF12 in other ways. Not near as linear or restrictive as FF13 either.

Well, I never said the game itself sucked; otherwise, I wouldn't have put over 80 hours into it at this point in time. Normally, I'm all for the "gameplay-over-story" mentality (it's the only reason why I still own Kingdom Hearts II), but when I play an RPG, I'd like the story to be one of, if not THE, most immersive aspects of the game. And let's just say I'm not playing FFXII for the story. But that's just MY opinion; don't let me rain on your parade. :P

kalle145 You mean like a New Game+ or just continued play after beating the final boss? I don't think this game has either one, if I remember correctly. Like, you can just load your save before the endgame and go do stuff.

I asked for this game for my birthday (that I had yesterday), I'm not sure what to think about Final Fantasy XII so far. All I can say as of now, is that, I don't like how you have to select your target before you attack. Attacks use to be just as easy as pressing X. Now when I press X nothing happens and it is confusing.

Think of it this way--it's not an action-RPG like Kingdom Hearts or something similar. It's still totally turn-based (every move from you, your allies, and your enemies are is being queued up), but it's just happening on-the-spot. Once you first choose to attack an enemy, you'll keep attacking until you either defeat them or decide to do something different. It'll pick up once you learn Gambits, then you can automatically attack the nearest enemy, or an enemy that attacks you, etc.

Is this game bad? I remember having it when I was 11 and I loved it because of exploring and the story was amazing. I never beat it though it was just as hard haha. I don't see why people say this was the turning point of final fantasy franchise. It was a great open world game and I don't like new lightning series where you have to load through every single fight and stand right in front of each other doing nothing but a stab then wait and turns and all that junk just got me bored. So I'm buying a ps2 just for this game

Honestly, it is the best in my opinion. You don't have so much repetition with the boring random attacks. Everything is on screen. I loved this game. Actually enjoyed sitting down and taking my time. This game had the best gameplay, best PS2 graphics, and best storyline, in my opinion.

Well, I don't usually try to relate a gaming experience to my own life, though if I do, it definitely hits close to home at times. But for the most part, I'm just looking for a challenge, an overall enjoyable experience. I don't necessarily need to be all THAT immersed in the world of the game. I mean, technically, it *is* still turn-based--everyone's moves are automatically being queued up one at a time, and whoever's up next, gets to go next--it's just happening faster than most other turn-based RPGs. I guess it's kinda like a single-player MMO of sorts. I kinda dig it.

All in all, a game has to have at least a good balance of all of these traits before you can say it is even "good". If you leave graphics down a bit, then that isn't so bad. Graphics is more of a "relishing" or "polish" attribute to the game, only giving it as a "plus" rather necessity. If you didn't do well on the story and/or gameplay, then of course the game won't be that great. When you play a game, you want to feel like you accomplish something.

Well, even though this is fairly late, isn't the true value of a game whether it gives out a good moral, has good meaning to the gameplay itself, and it is just plain fun to play? I mean, I don't wanna play a game where it has the BEST graphics and the BEST gameplay where it would make a death of a family member seem like nothing, IF the story was half-assed, childish, and not prepared/well though out. This was the game that signalled the turning point for the FF series. For the worst. After the sublime brilliance of FF10 they changed the gameplay to a more real-time feel of the battles from the traditional turn based system. Every FF since has been, frankly, rubbish.

I can honestly say, without a shadow of a doubt, that this is the game I have more loathing for than any other, and I have played a hell of a lot of games in my time! The actual gameplay is fine, on a par with similar games, the graphics are gorgeous, but the damn cutscenes that just drag on and on and that ridiculous 16th century olde englishe style dialogue just bored the hell out of me and completely ruined the game!
