If anyone is interested in trying out Final Fantasy XIV, it has a free trial that lets you play the entire base game, first expansion, and second expansion, up to level 70, for free with no restriction on playtime. You will also be able to play as 6 unique races(8 once you have access to other expansions), 15 battle classes(jobs in game), 8 crafting and 3 gathering, all of which is available on a single character. It has a very friendly and welcoming community, a fantastic story, wonderful world, and unforgettable characters. The start will be slow, but that gives you enough time to explore, practice fighting, and enjoy your time.

At this point, after 5 expansions and going onto the 6th one, World of Warcraft was already in a pit of despair, bleeding players, trust and quality like there's no tomorrow, and FFXIV is releasing their 6th expansion with not NEARLY as much of a fluctuation of quality of content. One character can learn all the jobs. And you can even change what your character looks like (race/gender) and keep everything you've learned. The game has massive maps separated by short (if at all) loading screens. And it's free (with limitations) up to lvl 70.

This is planned and typical for them. Expansion will release in the summer, and they probably have 2 or 3, maybe 4 more trailers in store that will definitely give some headway where the game is going to head story wise. Right now it's a little early for story content to be shown, so they go with the trusty potential class and dungeon reveals and will save the more juicy trailers for closer to launch.

The first few 'versions' of the game are F2P for starter accounts that haven't spent money. The few versions after that will require purchases and subscription. And if you've spent money, you can't revert to a starter account again. (F2P - A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and soon Stormblood. Normal - Shadowbringers, Endwalker, soon Dawntrail.)
