There are flaws to the Dawntrail story (namely the pacing, good god it took forever for things to finally start moving with some gusto) but the core of the story was really good, and I liked the exploration of passing the torch. I think it's fitting that the WoL is now the mentor figure, the "Big Good" pushing the next generation's heroes to achieve their dreams. We're out for adventure, but we had our "walk before": the threats of this post-Ascian age are for "those who come after" to deal with, in their way, on their terms. I think Wuk Lamat embodies this well. I enjoyed 7.0 MSQ and I'm looking forward to what the patches bring.

I actually kinda am happy this was the ending theme, for one because it was so different to that of all the other expansions that were all very much in similiar style, so having this for the start of a new journey is fine, EXSPECIALLY at least for me because this expansion was not about the WoL really, like we were never before quite as much in a background support role as we were here for Wuk Lamat, so for me this was truely her Expansion and for her that theme kinda fits, with her ideology of happiness and also her more positive outlook on life and death Explanation for the Wuk Lamat thing: Normally even if expansion like stormblood with lyse had front and center characters it was always the WoL who had to defeat the big enemies, so it was alone the WoL and people supporting the WoL in some way that drove the main story In comparrison in dawntrail is that we never truely did anything meaningful without Wuk Lamat being front and center, like all the feats were her ideas and understanding the people or us supporting her, the fights she always was there even in the none trust trial and lastly we were quite often litterally told to stand aside and let her do what only she as the leader should do, which for me is fine simply because power scaling wise the wol is a monster for the writers i guess exspecially if you want to start the next arc in a way where you do not want to have our enemy and the stakes be something that power wise is stronger than despair personafied, sonce staring slower lets you build up a story once again BUT i also understand if people are kinda dissapointed with the player taking such a beackseat in comparrison to pretty much all the other expansions and did not enjoy being forced to be the support this time since it is a self insert MMO which normally does put the players in the main active roles

I know a lot of people are torn on this, but I think the OST fits. The not so subtle message of the final zone (at least to me) is about letting go of the past and learning to move on/how it's okay to let go, and this song invokes the imagery of a "new day" or a rising sun, which fits into that perfectly. That, and the imagery also doubles as an "and now that this storm has passed, we can look forward to the future (next patches)."

ngl I think some people forgot that we were *literally told* what this expansion would be about and were somehow expecting another mega-banger like Shadowbringers or something. I had a grand time, personally! The MSQ is far from perfect (some writing issues, some pacing issues, etc), but the characters and moments and themes were so enjoyable to me that it didn't matter that we were going on The Great Tural Tour With Wuk Lamat. Also, Soken is still at it. Bless him.

I personally find a lot of flaws with this expansion. The pacing is terrible for one. Nothing actually happens until you're close to the 5th zone. In fact all story beats up until that point have been in service of building up a one-dimensional, friendship-is-magic Disney style children's cartoon of a character. Which is the second point, that we take to the sidelines in favor of a character whose only emotions are: "I want to be friends with everyone" and "I like peace". Mired with ridiculous amounts of fetch quests chugged along by the machinations of Saturday morning cartoon-style villains in the first half. Last two zones are vastly better, owing to the fact that they launch what clearly should have been the story from the start. The setting gets better, the characters get better, the narrative gets vastly better. The final zone was something truly special not found elsewhere in this game. That is until the annoying cat opens her mouth to yet again say something so ridiculous and out-of-touch with reality that it makes Lyse seem like a masterwork of character writing. And let me just add, before the inevitable hordes of white knights appear, that the flaws of this story have got nothing to do with it being the set-up for a new story arc. The flaws are bad pacing, poor character writing, poor quest design and a very awkward narrative that doesn't start being interesting or making sense until the last act. All of those points could have been rectified without "stakes" or "making it as good as shb/ew". We all knew it wasn't going to be that, but it was certainly flawed regardless.

I loved the story, but this felt like a weird song to end it on. The ending largely felt a lot more somber than I think this portrays, functionally committing a (justified) genocide. I think the happier tone fits well, since the question becomes can you genocide already dead people? X was my first game, so the last area gave me zanarkand/gagazet Fayth vibes. Which definitely influences my interpretation. It gets to be happy because we didn’t kill people. We gave them a Sending. All those souls are heading back into the life stream to Flow into their next big adventure. The aethercurrent quests and the dungeon emphasize the wol is helping spirits move on. Sphene and her people get to rest after centuries of prolonged not-death in a soul eating rock. It’s interesting that Sphene isn’t compared more to Zodiark in the comments I’ve read.

The thing is, people are spoiled with ShB and EW. Hence, whenever a new expansion announced they expected something on par with ShB and EW. So when it’s delivered not with their expectation, they immediately come into conclusion for it being worse than SB. And itself feels unfair comparing ShB and EW, which at the climax of the saga, to DT, which is literally the first arc of new saga.

@@ScholarEnjoyer I have yet to find a single person presenting an actual good argument instead of saying "Wuk Lamat bad, story bad." There's people saying she's worse than Lyse, so it's hard to take these people seriously. It's the same vocal minority that was shitting all over Endwalker at the start of that expansion. Or the people that constantly doom & gloom about the game dying, when it's healthier than ever population-wise. Don't get me wrong, when there's a time to shit on the game, I'm the first one in line. If you want to complain, then complain about the lackluster job design and how practically every job just got a bigger AoE in this expansion instead of ANYTHING interesting. But crying about a story just because it wasn't what you were looking for makes you look like a cry baby. It was very well done and achieved exactly what it set out to do.

Good song, I enjoyed it better than the main theme. However, this needed more oomph in moments. As for Dawntrail, it's good, aside from the bs filler moments. However, even Endwalker had worse trash like the Ragnarok building quests and Mare Lamentorium. Lord knows this did a better job than ARR when introducing the peoples of the land. It's a good start to the new people we'll be spending time with for the next 10 years. It also did a better job at redeeming a starting villain than most previous characters fitting that mold. Hot take, Dawntrail actually had a story unlike the 6.X storyline that was basically leeching off FFIV. So if Dawntrail can make a good 7.X post storyline, it will be better than Stormblood and Heavensward.
