A note about cleric stance people forget, it didn't buff/nerf damage and healing as a modifier. It straight up swapped your Mind and Intelligence stats

In 1.0 you could complete the BASE msq (Yoshi-P changed that fast) could be completed without EVER fighting anything...and could be done by DoH/L. You did "Parley" (yes, that minigame in the inn) instead of fight if you chose to. There was visible belts, but also ammo slot, and 2 slots above ammo where literally nothing ever went in them so no one knows what they were for. Conjuror did ALL the basic elemental attacks, and Thaumaturge only dealt with light/dark attacks, like Bio and Dia. You couldn't play Arcanist nor Machinist, but they still had guilds and there were some Arcanist NPCs that could give you an idea of what Arcanist was ORIGINALLY going to be. They used a weird alembic type device on a long pole rather than a book, and they didn't have pets, but casted buffs/debuffs revolving around time. There were minor stat differences between races and what diety you chose affected your elemental resistance. There was "class exp/rank" and "physical exp/level". Your class rank worked like your job level now...but with physical level, your character had its own level that remained static (or increasing) even if you switched classes. You could see both moons (Menphina and Dalamud) in the sky from the behinning, with Dalamud NOT red, visibly orbiting Menphina over time. Also Menphina appeared MUCH further away than it does now. GMs would occasionally do spontaneous mini real-time events where they would roleplay as an MSQ NPC and wander into a town or camp to actually interact with the players in person. I personally saw Nael Van Darnus visit Camp Drybone, and Urianger visit Uldah. Urianger did less interpersonal exchanges with people, but he did pause from prophesying to look at me and cast hour-long Arcanist buffs on me. But speaking of camps....literally ALL camps were semi-fenced in circles with literally just a couple of tents, and an aetheryte and a campfire. There were WAY more camps and larger maps (most places having become inaccessible, and the places in La Noscea straight-up sinking into the sea). The maps were so large that there was "aether points" (aethernet) out in the worldmaps (but NOT in towns). Teleporting to the aetherpoints from their appointed aetherytes was free, but teleporting to an aetheryte cost not gil, but a resource called 'anima' that recharged over time. I don't remember exactly what teleport cost or what max anima or regen rate was, but it was SOMETHING like you could hold maybe 20 anima at once, and they recharged at about 7 anima in 24 hours, and it cost 3 anima to teleport...so it was like you had only 2-3 teleports a day. It was common practice to just set your home point before you left town and strip naked and kill yourself when you were ready to go back, as there were NO chocobos and no airships, and it took approximately 45 minutes to run from one town to the other. There was no jump, but there was tiny land elevations you had to walk around everywhere.....EVERYWHERE. Traveling anywhere was dangerous as level cap was 50, but there was often level 80-99 mobs just walking around waiting to one-shot you. Coerthas didn't have snow, the Black Shroud was a literal maze, and the West Shroud existed. Dungeons weren't instances, and there was no limit on the number of people who could go in at one time. You didn't have to form parties, but if you wanted to, you could form one up to 24 people in one party. There were now non-existent dungeons such as the Mun-Tuy Cellars, Shposhae, and Nanawa Mines. There were no jobs, only classes. And no VO other than English. All classes could wear all gear at all levels. If you weren't wearing something "recommended" for your class/level, the stats would just scale down to almost nothing, leaving them as essentially fashion items. It was common for people to wear best stat gear when out in the field, but in town put on just whatever they thought looked best. There was realistic movement physics. You would have to gain some momentum to get moving, and the inertia would have you take a few steps to slow before stopping. You turned or reversed direction exactly like real life people do, actually pivoting and everything, and you would lean into every turn as you ran along. The sharper the turn, the more you leaned. It made dodging tricky but looked great. Also, there was NO telegraphed attacks...you just had to learn and memorize what enemy attack patterns were. It wasn't just your shoes that made different sounds based on what you stepped on...ALL of your clothes made realistic soft sounds as you moved, varying by what materials your clothes were made of. Strictly lorewise, the Black Shroud elementals looked like element-base faeries, and there was 'greenwrath' that you'd be marked by if you did ANYTHING even remotely bad (woodsin) in the forest. If you got enough of it, the elementals would abduct you into a different plane of existence where you'd lose your mind and sense of self, and sometimes be able to reach the real would, but essentially as some kind of shade, and from then out be called a "wildling" and given up for lost. The echo functioned differently. You would be participating in any flashbacks, and though unable to actually change reality, you COULD interact with people within the echo and alter the outcome of just the flashback. There's definitely a lot more, but I'm tired. I might come back and add more in a reply to this comment if people ate actually interested in hearing about what i remember about 1.0, especially launch version.

Players: "We want the game to be more complicated." Devs: "We did that, and everyone left."
@obviouslykaleb7998
@obviouslykaleb7998 2 жыл бұрын
the game was less fun. tedium does not equal complication; food buffs are not complicated, as the only complication involved is either looking up "X primary stats," or piecing it together via your own stat sheet. yet, having to sit for 20 seconds before every pull as in WoW to get another food buff is tedious. having to wait for the AST to get the right cards pre pull was tedious, being entirely unable to play despite loving and knowing your job because of low TP is tedious, pre-nerf ARR was tedious. if complication were itself an issue that the devs were trying to avoid, SGE's -"kardia"- _eukrasia_ button wouldn't be a thing, and it would follow the same lines as every other healer in the game. it is, after all, one of two most recently added classes and therefore most accurately reflects their current job design. if complication were an issue, the dev's fix for DRK's Living Dead wouldn't be the veritable essay of "ifs," "ands" and "buts" it is now. if complication were an issue, hunts and hunt stuff would be much less complicated than they are now, not requiring you to go through all of the disconnected questlines in sequential order in order to even begin doing current content. if complication were an issue, the storyline would have a summary before and after each expansion, so you can catch up. if complication were an issue, new mechanics would either be perfectly explained beforehand or wouldn't ever have any real variation. no, complication is not why they're changing the game so drastically. they're _CASUALIZING_ it, explicitly because they're concerned that non-mmo players wont be able to "enjoy the story." it's the sort of brazen, scorched earth "as long as more people can have it, i don't care if the steakhouse starts serving literal garbage instead of steak" philosophy. it makes no sense, because it disregards the nature of the thing, but we're here regardless and all we can do is protest future changes. edit: totally forgot about the lack of auto-combo, giving NIN a more uniform buff instead of the ever so slightly different trick attack they had, the changes to healer's GCDs meaning that weave windows are now always open, the changes to SAM's kit making no sense under the guise of less complication for its' own sake (kenki is a dead mechanic now, for instance), and im certain im forgetting much more. the game isn't getting less complicated for its' own sake; the fact that they're adding skills to classes every expansion shows that outright. it's just a new, suffocating ideology that demands changes that are toxic to the very playerbase they've built up over the years.

Raiding in Stormblood was so hard that normal Omega raids were as difficult as Extreme trials, I wish I was joking and it wasn't because of the fight itself, but because of the way jobs were balanced at the time. In Heavensward it was worse, in Heavensward there were jobs that were simply unviable for raiding, such as Paladin. In SB and HW both, there were jobs in the game which no one played, such as Dark Knight, Machinist, Ninja and Paladin. End game Heavensward was *always* Main Tank Warrior, Second Tank Dark Knight. In Stormblood it was always Main Tank Warrior, Second Tank Paladin. Very few guilds cleared the final 4 Savage SB raids when it was current content, a lot of statics and guilds were always one tier behind, often not finishing until only a month before Shadowbringers released. Most people gave up entirely on raiding Savage and went to do Eureka instead as it was *easier*. That's how mechanically hard it used to be.

The problem every long running game has is that over time the new stuff starts to make the old stuff look worse than it is. It’s like power creep in moba’s. In the beginning everything is roughly equal but then 5 years later you have this 1 thing that can do all of those first things BUT BETTER. And the old things just can’t compete anymore. But people love those old relics, so the devs go aight, rather than get rid of it like we should, we’ll try to change the entire foundation to fit the new stuff.

Astrologian cards had such diversity back then - Balance is a damage buff (which is basically all cards now), Bole is a % damage mitigation, Arrow is Haste, Spear is recast time reduction (think long oGCDs being up faster when used under this buff as 20%) until it was changed to a crit chance buff, Ewer is MP cost reduction until changed to MP refresh, Spire is a TP cost reduction, until changed to TP refresh. AST twisted the battlefield when it comes to outgoing and incoming damage, durations and resources. Plus there was a way to increase the buff potency, extend the duration of the card played, and spread out the buffs to the party, at the expense of "burning" a card before you play the one you wish to modify. Think about AoE Balance (which was generally the best case scenario) that you need to pray to the Twelve that you pull off - sometimes even the raid waits for the AST to prepare the cards before pulling. Oh, AST-provided buffs being extended was a thing back then too - there was Time Dilation for a single target buff extension (to a party member except yourself), plus an AoE version with Celestial Opposition (which doesn't heal - it was a stun, but is also used for extending buffs, including those you cast on yourself). If you got lucky with the draws, it was phenomenal.

I learned New players that come to the game are gonna have a different experience then when I started. I am an oldie, joined for arr beta on the ps3. I will remember everything if its mentioned. Paladin didnt have a damaging aggro aoe. We had flash. It was a struggle because we didnt have as much aggro generation as we do today. A black mage fart could steal aggro if pld didnt spam flash and cycle aggro combo. Cause flash wasnt a damage move and a % of the aggro would be from the damage you cause. So big dongle dips would steal a mob or two. We didnt earn gil from dungeons and there wasnt desything items back then. if you wanted materia the gear would be destroyed in the process. We had elemental materia that i think you can still see on the board. It was strange times back then.

The major thing I remember (besides spirit dart spam) was that your MP did not regen until you went back to an aetheryte. I would walk out into the maze of Black Shroud corridors, kill like 3 mobs, and then have to walk back to whatever settlement and touch the aetheryte to regen mana. It SUCKED. Thankfully they fixed that really fast. But man. Y'all have no idea how fucking broken this game was when it first came out lmao.

The old Glamour system with the different types of prisms was removed when the devs added the Glam Dresser to the game along with glam plates a few months after Stormblood released. Before then actually having the gold saucer title for getting 100% in the dress up comp was a big deal purely because of the tedium involved. I love how in HW, PLD only had flash for AOE aggro and I don't think could pull any aoe damage abilities if I recall correctly, so it was all single target and you had MP for your only aoe, which was also a CD as it blinded enemies to make them liable to miss, that was fun for pulling aggro while trying to do damage (Not that you could much with the 30% reduction.) I started playing back then, hated PLD when I was in ARR, somehow came to like it by HW and have mained PLD ever since. I enjoy simple classes and it was pretty simple, more's been added but I'm so comfortable with it now, sometimes I forget it's not that simple go to easy class it used to be. It's still pretty easy comparatively but the addition of the spells mixes it up a bit more than dot combo, few royal authority combos and back to dot combo.

i do remember the time of Cross class abilities and the TP system, and also when Magic classes needed to have their highest level equipment because their max MP was Tied to gear. i remember once someone getting mad at a BLM in the party because they were not doing as much damage as others in the party(and we were in the very first Dungeon). Edit; i mean people complain that things have become too simple, but part of the reason for a lot of the changes was to make the game more welcoming to all play styles. like imagine if you will, when you cast Fire as BLM, it does Fire damage, and Blizzard does Ice damage, and not like what we have now where its just Magic damage; now the enemy you are fighting resists Fire, so you are now limited in what spells you can use. it sounds interesting on paper, but now imagine if they resist ALL magic damage from BLM; they would be useless, and it would really create the issue of people not wanting to play a particular class simply because it would be too limited in use. you might say "well why don't they just design around that and not favor any classes?" easier said then done. the larger the game gets that harder it becomes to really make new content without it just becoming just a bland paint by the numbers mess. besides, a game wont really last if its overly complected. there is a reason why super complex games tend to have a very limited player base, and MMO's do need a good sized Player base to keep them going after all.

Most of those jobs off globals were managed by the TP resource and TP functioned back then much the same as how Mana does now. We used to need potions and food that refreshed TP (all the potions and food which did that have had their stats changed or were removed from the game, for example: There used to be a low level item that restored TP that was changed so it is now a vanity consumable that releases fireworks in Shadowbringers, in Endwalker 6.1 it was removed from the game entirely, if you have any left, you have the last of them.) In Shadowbringers the number of off globals for dragoon got reduced by two (to only be returned by one in Endwalker). In Stormblood and before Stormblood managing TP was hell for a dragoon because a 3rd of their combat rotation involved weaving in attacks that used TP, so you had to constantly manage your TP gage *and* your life of the dragon gage at the same time. Also all tanks unique job abilities used TP so you couldn't just spam shield bash on all the mobs like you can as Paladin today. Paladin today is now a powerhouse of early game dungeons and a solid tank in end game, if played well is a dream for healers as they have the highest controllable damage mitigation out of all the tanks as they can just Shelton their way through tank busters (This also requires a lot of skill... or cheating to pull off). However, in Stormblood although Paladins were not unviable like they were in Heavensward, having received finally a heal and support abilities added to their kit, making them feel like a paladin instead of a Gladiator+, they were still a weaker second fiddle to Warriors then. They had a janky opener since no gap closer, they used mana for Shelton, so even if your gage was saying you could use it, with no mana you still couldn't use it and both shield bash and shield lob used TP, however they did have one ability which has been removed from the game which made life a little easier, it was retaliation, which ironically used to be their biggest damage dealer before they actually got holy spells in Shadowbringers, problem is, retaliation was entirely RNG, what it basically did was block damage and then immediately hit the enemy target with 10% of that blocked damage, meaning you had to sit there and take a tankbuster to the face just so you could hit the boss for a big damager immediately after and any Paladin who didn't do this would be considered "bad at dps" by raids who cared about parsing

I had started in 2.0 as a pugilist , and then switched to summoner/arcanist because the demand for Goad was too much to handle.. i had like 3-4 bars of skills, i mostly use Titan egi for the 0 damage buff it had then switched to Ifrit because he had the best 'dps' stats for single boss, garuda ws mainly used just for group pulls.

That will be missed. Actually think all tanks should have some sort of “sacrifice” type roll ability that allows them to raise a “healer”(specifically) back from the dead at cost of half hp or something. I know the new system is practically based off speed resets where if party wipes behind you, tank has to cliff dive to reset instance and everyone just re-enters, but there was something enduring about FFXI battles almost wipes happened and last dps would kite as best they can while party comes back from the grave(5min weakness too.) Here it wouldn’t save time with how things go but over there, holding out recovery was better than the hour of re-home then airship/chocobo back to location and reassembling just to give it another go, and if that happened, someone else may have claimed that mob and your waiting another week for its own respawn timer.

Looks like people just skip repair cost. Repair cost in ARR is really harsh. You will basically end up wasting 300k for repairing 0% gears (all gears) and nothing can get that gil back. The only thing you can do is leveling crafter, get dark matter which also freaking rare due to you get the GC seals freaking slowly or just throw your gear away..

A correction on the TP and Sprint thing. It didn’t increase speed but the duration would be tied to the amount of TP you had. Sprint was on a 30 cooldown but consumed all TP, and with the way TP regenerated you wouldn’t have full TP back by the time Sprint was back up so it would reduce the duration of the next Sprint. Also accuracy was a stat in A Realm Reborn and Heavensward and different roles had an “accuracy cap” for each fight in order to hit the boss, and since these were never explained accuracy in Coil had to be calculated while progressing each tier. Raiders would calculate the minimum accuracy required to ensure that you could maximise other sub stats while hitting the accuracy cap. Heavens Eye materia was originally accuracy rather than Direct Hit. Healers and casters shared a “rear” accuracy cap which based the accuracy on the rear of the boss for physical jobs, and they would never have to go above that, it was always the lowest. Melee DPS and bard had to reach the flank accuracy cap to ensure they could hit from the flanks for positional or if required due to movement. Tanks had to have frontal accuracy cap which was stupidly high in order for skills to hit while main tanking. If any fights required players to be in front of the boss all physical would have to hit frontal cap or risk missing hits. At one point they tried to dissuade healer DPS by removing accuracy from healer gear, which only forced healers to meld accuracy materia onto gear. Speaking of melding raid, tome and dungeon gear didn’t always have meld spots and those were only added in Heavensward. You only had the stats that the gear provided. Block rates in shields used to have a meaning in ARR with certain shields being preferred over other options. I never played PLD but iirc tower shields had a higher block rate at the expense of other stats while smaller shields had lower block rates. There was some crazy stuff from back in the day that part of me misses now but I’m so glad was changed or removed.

As for cross classing, yeah people complain endlessly that the jobs are all so simple now but personally, it was extremely common back in ARR and HW to run into people in duty finder and party finder who straight up did not know how to play their jobs and had no willingness to learn. 'You don't pay my sub' was only such a prevalent meme in FFXIV communities because people actually said it day in day out when you tried to tell them they actually had to hit some of their buttons, or that a Warrior needed to level Paladin to get provoke so they could actually perform mechanics like tank swapping at level 60. You still sometimes see people like that today, but not nearly as much. I'll take a more streamlined levelling/rotation system any day if it means the people in my party are more likely to be able to play their jobs.

Ah, cross-class skills. I do miss the system, it tied into the WoL lore greatly - canonically we're masters of all classes, so having to level multiple classes to make a complete job was on point. Wish they could have made it a bit less tedious rather than remove it entirely. Also being required to play every role gave you appreciation for how they play. I greatly appreciate the removal of tedium from the game, but wish they could do it without sacrificing the flavour.

I miss cross class abilities, could take BLM blizzard 2 aoe and put it on any healer so they could aoe dmg during low level dungeons before they'd have access to their own dmg aoe spell. But fuck needing to level other classes to unlock those other actions ugh lol. Another thing, when doing low level content, you had to manual swap out your higher tier attacks with your low tier ones as this was before upgrade trait system was added. I fucking hated max MP/spell costs based off LV, so glad 5.0 shadowbringers changed it. God send for healers saving MP. Same for removing bar TP for weaponskills.

Many veterans could tell you 3.0 was probably the best time to be around. The classes and Jobs were fun except range physical lol. It was complex but at the same time approachable. So was crafting. We had amazing crafting skills that helped us or punished us. And arguably, Heavensward had the best crafting and gathering sets. It was time consuming and expensive to make. And not to mention pentamelding. But once you had it, you felt very accomplished and rewarded by being able to craft useful things.

So. racial stats didn't matter for the most part... EXCEPT Piety was a main stat and increased max mp instead of increasing mp regeneration and wasn't limited to healers. So you might think having 5 more piety then other races isn't such a big deal right? It wasn't, until it ended up hitting a breakpoint. There was a point in HW where Dunesfolk Lalafells could cast like 1 more Fıre IV than everyone else iirc. Forget respeccing your attributes to play SCH and SMN, try using a fantasia to play BLM. To this day, I still wish they either brought back HW cleric stance or give us something else that is meaningful. It is a stance that effectively nerfs your healing by 90% but your dps OUTSIDE of cleric was garbage. The hardest thing to explain over text is it's cooldown of 10 seconds. You had 10 seconds between turning it on. You could turn it off anytime for free and it didn't have a cost but if you wanted to turn it on, off and then on again you had to wait 10s inbetween two activations, if that makes sense. The cooldown was only on turning it on. Currently in most content you heal once or twice, then have a 20-30 second dps window. Or you weave your healing inbetween your dps. What I'm trying to say is that the idea it "forced all the healing on one player" or "made it really hard to heal" isn't really accurate at all. Think of it like the Blood Lily system in WHM(now that it's finally fixed after so goddamn long). It just seperates the GCD's you dedicate to healing vs dps. A more modern and more interesting implementation of cleric stance might look like a reverse-lily system where you do one big powerful attack 4 times more powerful than your single target, but you can't use dps spells for 10 seconds, letting you gcd heal without it being wasteful.
