'Final insult': Andrew Bolt slams Vatican's treatment of Cardinal Pell's body

The Vatican should feel “deeply ashamed” as to the way in which Cardinal George Pell’s body was treated before being sent to Australia for burial following his death, says Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
Mr Bolt discussed how a “Pell confident” who was at the opening of the Cardinal’s coffin found the body had been treated with “gross disrespect”.
“Perhaps it was just incompetence, but some of Pell's closest associates have told me they suspected some in the Vatican had not forgiven Pell for exposing corruption,” Mr Bolt said.
The Sky News host said he also spoke with Cardinal Pell’s brother, David, to check what he knew of what had been done to the body.
“As he confirmed, the embalming, in his words, had been mucked up, or buggered up," Mr Bolt said.
"A Sydney undertaker had to clean the body - Pell's nose had also been broken. Pell was also shoeless, said David Pell, his brother.
"In fact, I'd been told he wasn't only shoeless - all his clothes had simply been just thrown in the coffin.
“It is true that, outwardly, the Vatican did Pell the full honours at his death, with a packed service at St Peter's, attended by the Pope, and Pell remains of course admired by many around the world, including me - and not just Catholics of course, because I'm not, I'm not even Christian - admired as a man of God, a man of principle, a reformer, a strong leader and a man persecuted for his faith.
“But the Vatican should now be deeply, deeply ashamed to have treated his body so shabbily.”
Mr Bolt said it was a "final insult" to a "great and innocent man".

I would forget their names after they were placed in their coffins as I had to 'let them go'. I nearly received a known pedophile and was very glad my funeral home didn't do his funeral. After that, I asked my people not to tell me if they were a good person or not, as I wanted to have the right attitude, while preparing them. Yes, there are horrible people who shouldn't be anywhere near another human being. But there are people out there who do, do the best they can for your person. My condolences to the Pell family. I've worked in a Mortuary. You don't end up with a busted nose from Mortuary work or transfers from Overseas. I'm betting his nose was busted when he was murdered in post recovery operation. I agree the accusation against Pell, other than that he may have failed to adequately report to police complaints against some priests, was suspect. There is no precedent for abuse of two minors simultaneously in an open room adjacent to a sacristy following communion, contrary to the memory or belief of a priest’s assistant. It has too much the aspect of a framing designed by the boys in retaliation, as they were known delinquents at that time. When you transfer a body overseas the embalm is done to ensure the body doesnt leak like a sive on the plane. When you are buried in a crypt or vault you are embalmed and bio sealed to ensure leakage doesnt happen. It's not pleasant. Trust me on that.

@franktully3065 On a principle of legal technicality Pell got special leave granted before the court. The High Court didn't consider the actual evidence that a jury unanimously convicted on and an appeals court agreed with.

Yes, the High Court heard the appeal, as it has heard appeals many, many times before. Legal guilt is established (or not), in criminal cases, on evidence the prosecution is obliged to provide, that establishes guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The prosecution failed to establish this. Not only that, but, as the High Court implied, the Vic appeals court behaved as though it were up to Pell to "prove" his innocence; despite saying earlier that they understood the above basic principles concerning the burden and standard of proof. Some of the "reasoning", if it can be dignified by the term, bordered on pythonesque.. Eg: Mr Anonymous was "convincing", both when (and because) he got the facts completely wrong or when and because, he was correct. Oddly, this "reasoning" apparently didn't apply to defence witnesses. Utterly bizarre. Then there were the words: "Not impossible". Completely irrelevant! Criminal cases aren't decided on what is "possible" or on a balance of probabilities but on a standard of proof beyond any reasonable doubt. I'm wasting my time I expect, but if you are genuinely serious in understanding what happened and why, read Windschuttle's book on the Pell case. If you read it with an open mind (which may prove difficult), you'll see why the case shouldn't have ever gone to trial. Why in earth do you think the High Court decision was seven- zip?.. a "technicality"?

Did you check out the specifics of his case? There have been terrible cover-ups and incidences of sexual abuse within the catholic church, but I suspect Pell was not one of them. It was overturned because of a lack of evidence.

The High Court dismissed all charges against him. in a unanimous decision. They made it clear that no reasonable person could convict Pell on the evidence presented. He is innocent. Cardinal Pell did not get off on a technicality as the misinformation spread by certain media outlets allege.
