I like how the sequel movies both had dark reflections of Hiccup as the villains. Drago from 2 was the dark dragon tamer who used fear instead of comraderie. Grimmel from 3 is a more literal reflection of Hiccup as he is him if he killed toothless when he caught him.

It's hinted at in the second movie but not really explained that the dragons have human level intelligence, including having their own language that a human can learn. At least, they did in the books. Hiccup could speak the dragon language in the books. I think that Drago, in the second movie, could speak the dragon language. The dragons seemed to react to his yelling as if it were speech. And Toothless definitely seemed to be speaking to the enemy dragon in that movie. Also, there's an animated series that covers the times between the movies. I wouldn't expect you to react to them, but you might enjoy watching them on your own time.

Make friends and family and do what it takes to keep them safe. Learn to mourn the demise of love onces. Understand that nothing is fairy tale. Each action has consequences (like hiccups foot, losing father, then letting go toothless) learn to let go what u love if necessity arise. Understand the life and it's meaning. This trilogy has everything that kid should watch.

You just have to watch a TV series about dragons, not only because of the awesome connection with the second part and the explanation of some things (like Stoick's dragon and Hiccup's sword) but also because of the plot in principle. They dive deeper into what happened on that 5 year gap between the first film and this. They expand on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, Hiccup and his dad, as well as flesh out the rest of the gang, and how Berk adapted to living with dragons. You should also watch the Gift of the Night Fury holiday special because the events of that are referenced in the next film. And if you like watching Astrid and Hiccup's relationship develop (since when have they been engaged, for example) then you just won’t be able to stop watching this series))))
