I remember watching Banshees at Venice and immediately predicting Condon for the supp actress win. Something about her performance just gives me vibes that the Academy will go for. I think for Basset we've been relying too much on the narrative and places like the Globe's have been trying to push it, but 's time and time again the Oscar's love to prove that's not the case.

@@MuhammadAhmad-oj6mf Who do you want to win and who’s going to win are two very different things. Although, I honestly believe that either Yeoh or Blanchett could pull off a win on Oscar night. But based on the odds and the momentum in this final week of Oscar voting. It seems to me that the ship is sinking rapidly on Cate Blanchett’s side and her favor to win for Best Actress has gone down dramatically. Having said that, let us leave all the arrangements to academy voters, I’m sure they would choose wisely…It will not, however, be Blanchett ( not in pejorative sense lol). I believe Michelle Yeoh is going to win and should win on Oscar night. I wouldn’t miss it for the world to witness that moment.

I was thinking about an Andrea Riseborough upset back when she was nominated, but the To Leslie team just stopped campaigning after that. It just died, fizzled out. They've given up and disappeared. If she wins, it will be a huge upset that potentially plagues her for many years, similar to Marissa Tomei in 92. And it’s more damaging than beneficial. Not that she isn’t good or that her campaign is really scandalous. But her top 2 competitors are too beloved and presented their career-best work, and to take it from either one of them would be the real scandal.

Save for Julianne Moore in Still Alice on the last decade, but she was also nominated 5 times before. Personally, I want Stephanie to be the surprise win. If we're awarding based on performances, Stephanie gave a lead actress-level performance. She's 1/3 of that movie and carried her weight fantastically. However, I believe Basset is taking it. I wouldn't be upset either cause she's amazing. But, if I'm being honest I feel like with the upset of Davis and Deadwyler getting snubbed, there might be a strong pull to support Angela. I don't think the Oscar's wants the narrative of 3 incredible (and deserving) black actresses getting snubbed.

Just as a side note - I won't deny that Austin Butler was fantastic in Elvis but he was done a huge disservice (again IMO) by Tom Hanks' extremely annoying character who was constantly taking the focus off his performance. Why they chose to tell the story from "Col" Tom Parker's point of view is beyond me. Then Baz Luhrman covers up the weaknesses with flash per his style. My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 11.3): Best Picture: 10. Triangle.of Sadness 9. Avatar: The Way of Water 8. Women Talking 7. Elvis 6. Tár 5. The Fabelmans 4. Top Gun: Maverick 3. All Quiet on the Western Front 2. The Banshees of Inisherin 1. Everything Everywhere All at Once This race seems locked. Best Direction: 5. Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness) 4. Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) 3. Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) 2. Todd Field (Tár) 1. The Daniels (Everything Everywhere All at Once) Todd Field could pull an upset, but it seems incredibly unlikely. Best Leading Actress: 5. Ana de Armas (Blonde) 4. Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) 3. Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) 2. Cate Blanchett (Tár) 1. Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) An incredibly tight race between Yeoh and Blanchett, but I believe the latter's incredible disinterest in winning again will come into effect. Best Leading Actor: 5. Bill Nighy (Living) 4. Paul Mescal (Aftersun) 3. Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) 2. Austin Butler (Elvis) 1. Brendan Fraser (The Whale) Another incredibly tight race, but I believe the career narrative, frontrunner status, and everyone being sick and tired of Austin Butler's Elvis schtick will end up working in Fraser's favour. Best Supporting Actress: 5. Hong Chao (The Whale) 4. Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) 3. Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once) 2. Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) 1. Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) A true toss up between the top 3, but Condon seems to me like the solid, stable pick with the one with the least working against her. Best Supporting Actor: 5. Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) 4. Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans) 3. Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) 2. Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) 1. Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) #QuanSweep LES GOOOOOOOO Best Original Screenplay: 5. Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner (The Fabelmans) 4. Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness) 3. Todd Field (Tár) 2. The Daniels (Everything Everywhere All at Once) 1. Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) I'm fully aware that I'm predicting an upset here, but I just can't see the 2nd strongest movie of the season go out with only a Best Supporting awards won in a toss up, and that's assuming that Condon does win. A win for The Daniels wouldn't shock me in the slightest tho. Best Adapted Screenplay: 5. Rian Johnson (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) 4. Kazuo Ishiguro (Living) 3. Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, Christopher McQuarrie, Peter Craig and Justin Marks (Top Gun: Maverick) 2. Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stockwell (All Quiet on the Western Front) 1. Sarah Polley (Women Talking) Here's my thinking when it comes to Women Talking vs. All Quiet on the Western Front: if Women Talking only got nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay, does that not mean that the Academy thinks the screenplay is so good that its strength is enough to elevate an otherwise unremarkable movie into being 1 of the 10 best movies of the year? And if so, what are the odds that another movie's screenplay can compete with such strength? IDK, that's what makes the most sense to me, but I'm not ruling out All Quiet at all.

The reason I'm not doubting Bassett is because the SAG went to Jamie Lee. If it had gone to Condon, i would've said the momentum has shifted, but Bassett won the early awards, won the most so far and you could argue BAFTA wanted to be different, and SAG wanted to honor the Curtis family for all their contributions. Martin McDonagh is literally an Oscar winner already, in fact he's been an Oscar winner since 2007 when his short film "Six Shooter" won in the live-action short category. Granted, he's never won a writing or directing Oscar, but he does already have an Oscar to his name, so it's not like he's gotten all these nominations and never won anything.

The funny thing about Angela Bassett is that people falsely remember her winning for Whats Love Got to Do With It. Like I have had several conversations where people have gone “Oh she won for playing Tina Turner right?” So idk how that effects things, either people thinking she has already won or people coming to the realization that she lost for that and being more inclined to vote for her this time around.

You make a heck of a good point about Regina King’s 2019 win and I did successfully predict she would win. The same can be said about Angela Basset for this year’s ceremony but the main difference I see between these is that King won a ton of critics awards throughout that award season prior to her Globe and Critics’s Choice win. However, the big winners of this season for critics have been Kerry Condon or Stephanie Chu. My instinct says Condon will win but could Basset? Less than a day till we know

If you actually think about it, when Austin butler won the Golden Globe award for best actor, he dedicated the wind to Elvis Presley‘s daughter, Lisa Marie, who tragically passed away three days after the award ceremony so I honestly think Austin Butler deserves the best actor in a leading role because not only did he portray Elvis Presley Perfectly his singing talents are exceptional, his mannerisms were perfection, and he even got Elvis’s body language, correct. I honestly think that Austin Butler deserves the best actor win because Elvis is such an iconic pop-culture icon not just in music but as a person

Final random Oscar thoughts: EEAAO will become the zaniest film ever to win the Best Pic Oscar. You have to admit, it’s kind of silly. Even though I like Michelle Yeoh and think she will win, I think Cate deserves to. The quality of performances isn’t even close. As much as I like Jamie Lee Curtis, her SAG win was kind of a joke and more of a career award than anything. I really hope that Kerry Condon or Angela Bassett takes The Oscar. Austin Butler will probably win, and that’s fine, but I’m rooting for Fraser. Obviously, the Daniels are taking Director, but I’d like to see it go to Todd Field. Please let RRR win for song as expected. That is all.

When it comes to narratives there are few that make the case. With comeback narratives Ke Huy Quan has the best narrative to win but at the same time his narrative overshadows Brendan fraser and his narrative which is similar. EEAAO has probably the most original screenplay I’ve seen in years while Banshees has a great screenplay but kinda feels it’s been done before. Adapted screenplay does come down to AQOTWF and Women Talking and hope Sarah polley wins. Supporting Actress is a free for all. If banshees has a chance to win something it’ll be for Kerry Condon and she was great so I won’t be surprised if she wins. Angela and Jamie could split the veteran vote but Jamie has an edge because she is Hollywood royalty and coincidentally is nominated in the same category as her mother Janet Leigh for PSYCHO. Best Actor is where I’m gonna rant so bear with me: ever since I watched ELVIS I was amazed on how Austin Butler was able to give the king the humanity that we sometimes we forget because Elvis has mostly become a caricature. Austin didn’t imitate Elvis, he BECAME Elvis. Brendan Fraser in THE WHALE is another transformative performance but the film is divisive but people’s love for Fraser kinda saves the film. I’ve gotten annoyed that everyone wrote off Austin as a contender because he wasn’t known to everybody and they all put Brendan and Colin at the top because they have the years to be in this position and making Austin third place. The internet ADORES Brendan Fraser and they want him to win because he means so much to so many people and I get it and if the internet were academy voters, he’d win in a landslide. Side note the Jeff bridges win had more to do with him being due since he was nominated couple times before. And best makeup is an indication on will win best actor. Also we don’t know when if any of the nominees gonna be nominated again so if Austin has a chance to win now this is his chance and I’m prepared for a beyhive-type outrage for when Fraser loses. So I know Austin will win because you can’t deny that he put in the work. 3 years of work and it shouldn’t be ignored. Best actress really does come to Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh. Cate is not actively looking for a Third Oscar and she is the Australian Meryl Streep and I get the argument of her being a two time winner but her performance in TAR is just a brilliant OMFG. I won’t be mad if she won and if she did win she would’ve won in each decade from the 00s,10s,20s and a possible fourth win in the 2030s. Yeoh has a good chance also to win and I think her winning would be a breaking the internet moment. The Daniels could win best director but never count out Spielberg Best picture EEAAO is easily the favorite to win but there might a be a surprise.

3 of the 4 acting categories are so hard to predict. When it comes to your predictions you have none of the BAFTA winners winning; I don't think that's happening. My head is telling me one thing, my heart is telling me another. My heart would pick Michelle Yeoh/Brendan Fraser/Stephanie Hsu/Ke Huy Quan. My head is saying Cate Blanchett/Austin Butler/Kerry Condon/Ke Huy Quan. So, I'm going to go with a mix and hope for the best. One stat that sticks out for Best Actress is the BAFTA winners over the last 10 years. 9 of the last 10 winners there have gone on to win the Best Actress Oscar (except last year). With that in mind I'm predicting Cate Blanchett, undeniably the best performance in that category. I'm picking Brendan Fraser for Best Actor (the most emotional performance of the 5). Supporting Actress I'm going with Kerry Condon. I just don't see the overall voting body giving it to a performance from a Marvel Movie. I also think Angela Bassett & Jamie Lee Curtis could actually split the career win narrative allowing Kerry Condon the win. In either case that category is going to be extremely close. Supporting Actor the only acting category that's a lock Ke Huy Quan. Quick picks in others: Best Picture - Everything Everywhere All At Once, Director - The Daniels, Adapted Screenplay - Women Talking & Original Screenplay - Everything Everywhere All At Once (so I agree with all of your picks there).

Almost 100% agreement. I'm picking JLC for supporting actress (despite agreeing that Shu was the more deserving performance in EEAAO). The Academy is 80% white and 65% male, and supporting actress is SO often a "career recognition" award. Historically this award is a much better chance for a POC (9 wins out of 84, starting with Hattie McDaniel in 1939). However with two other awards almost certainly going to POC (Yeoh, Quan) they will feel more relaxed about the optics of giving this award to JLC over Bassett. Plus I think they are at peace with the "sweep" aspect for EEAAO.

The way I see it, the Blanchett vs Yeoh discourse really boils down to one thing and one thing only: does the Academy wish to remain stuck in the past or would they rather get on with the times? Beyond identity politics, a Michelle Yeoh win would be a lot more inspired for a myriad of reasons, but perhaps most of all it would help alleviate the persistent genre bias that ONLY serious dramatic acting is worthy of an Oscar. Sure, her performance has dramatic moments, but it’s also a layered tour de force that encompasses comedy, sci-fi, and martial arts, among others; hopefully, moving forward, her win would allow actresses delivering a performance that’s beyond the staid-and-solemn (some of the most recent examples include Toni Collette in Hereditary and Lupita Nyong’o in Us) a chance to be recognized via a nomination or even better, a win. I would like Michelle Yeoh to win Best Actress NOT because I don’t admire Cate Blanchett or think she wasn’t stellar in Tár; it’s just that I think it would make a rather boring, predictable win. When we think of exemplary acting, we think of someone who looks, speaks, and acts like Cate Blanchett and plays roles like Lydia Tár. She’s the type of actress that gets canonized and does roles that also get canonized in the media and major award shows. But why is that? What makes someone who looks, speaks, and acts like Michelle Yeoh or an Evelyn Wang type of role less Oscar-worthy or canonized? Why should it remain that way too? These are questions that WE need to interrogate ourselves with as an audience. “Diversity” doesn’t - and shouldn’t - boil down to race and race only. In the context of a performance, it should also extend to the type of film the nominated role appears in, the type of role itself, the language used in the film, and the nominee’s age (so yes, the Academy needs to nominate and reward both younger AND older actresses - on that note, a Michelle Yeoh win would also hopefully alleviate the age bias and show that it is possible for an older actress to triumph against her younger, more media-favored counterparts), to name but a few. But above all, I think anyone in their right mind would agree that it IS ludicrous how there’s only been exactly ONE non-white actress to win Best Actress thus far, in the nearly a century that the institution has been around. Plain and simple, it’s wrong and unjust. Surely there have been countless outstanding performances over these past few decades by non-white actresses worthy of a nomination or even a win? Michelle Yeoh gave one of those and is rightfully being considered as a winner, so why not rectify the situation and just let her win? I think people need to realize that as local as the Academy Awards are, the ceremony is broadcast worldwide and has a major international impact beyond the American media. A Michelle Yeoh win, and an EEAAO sweep, would send a strong message: “We’re ready to welcome the future and reimagine it from this point forward.” As I said, at this point it’s really just a question of whether the Academy is choosing to remain safe and predictable, or to do right and just by their own tenet, which is to reward artistic excellence in acting. Clearly, there are so many ways to demonstrate excellence as there are so many kinds of people in this world, especially in the acting world.

frances won because her movie, nomadland was the front runner that year that won best picture, best director, best actress, and the momentum of her movie drags her along for the win even though she had only won bafta that year. same scenario. michelle movie is the front runner, it wins all the guild awards leading up to the oscar, and that momentum will drag michelle along with the movie for her win. another factor also favors michelle is that, she will become the first asian to win best actress, the same narrative when halle berry became the first black to win best actress by beating out the favorite, sissy spacek, who won critic choice and golden globe, and beating out judy dench, who won bafta, and halle berry won sag, and oscar that year.

The performances between Bassett and King are not being compared…What is being compared is the similarity between the awards King won and that which Bassett has also now won. Which is important to consider, when thinking objectively, since so much emphasis is being placed on SAG. King didn’t even receive a SAG or BAFTA nomination. So, I’m not sure that it was even necessary to re-watch scenes from King’s film to justify your point. I remember that year personally being surprised that King was nominated. I watched the film, but her performance didn’t stick with me (not that it wasn’t good). The supporting performance from Aunjanue Ellis, is the one that stood out to me-even to this day. Either way it’s all subjective, so you could have stuck with your Condon opinion w/o going to watch past movie clips.

Hiya Brian, Most film Critics & Predictors whom are rationalising why Frazer should win instead of Butler, because of age, a more seasoned actor against a younger break through acting role, is reminding me of an unjust occurrance in 1951. That year the Oscar went to Humphrey Bogart, instead of the clearly deserving winner, Marlon Brando. Everyone knew it, but the same narrative by the Academy was used to honour Bogart. Bogart was old by then & wouldn’t have a chance again at receiving his one & only Oscar. But fortunately for Brando, he went on to receive the Oscar in 1954. Should'nt it really be about the BEST Actor wins? I believe this way of judging is so unfair for Butler, like it was for Brando. What if unfortunately Butler' career, turns out to be like Paul Newman', Bogart', John Garfield', Robert Mitchum', Robert Redford', Steve McQeens', Tom Hardy', etc. Why must the Academy judge this way & not reward the Oscar to the BEST ACTOR of the year?! Why do these competitions have to be unfair & meet some sort of secret, hidden agenda?! (I'm not singularling you out, so please don't take any offence). Most videos I've seen or articles I've read, are all similar. There's also most other competitions which I follow being always the same & complicated. :) Ty n Cheers

It’s so frustrating that all these YT film critic channels agree that Stephanie Hsu SHOULD win, but will not because of the politics and game. So unfair.

ABSOLUTELY on Judd Hirsch. If it's not a legacy for supporting actress, which goes first, I think judd gets it.

Even though I love Michelle Yeoh's performance and I want her to win but damn Cate Blanchett in Tar is a masterpiece of acting. It’s one of the greatest performance in years. I would be very happy if they tie for best actress.

Btw Best supporting actress I’m rooting for Kerry Condon and Hsu but I think Condon has more opportunities for winning.

I HATE how people discredited Cate's work just because they like EEAAO better than Tar. Like of course Michelle's performance was great ( I personally think Cate's was better) This is an award for Acting...and of course Michelle, Cate, and the other nominees deserve any award they can get. it's just unfair that they're not actually judging Cate's performance but judged it from the Movie Tar. But if course, Michelle have momentum...EEAAO being one of the best movie + Killer performance+ Dominating other categories, Plus she's asian and represents us (I'm asian) and could have a great chance at making history which is why I think the Academy Committee would 100% make her win. Plus, it also helps that they will appear less racist for once 😆. And if Michelle don't win, People would STRAIGHT up go to saying the Oscar is racist and won't even acknowledge other's work.

@@clonnlijinhlong2713 having Michelle Yeoh win will not make them appear “less racist.” Also, I truly doubt the Academy cares how it will look if Blanchett wins…if she’s good, she’s just good, there will be complaints either way. There will also be a need for work to be done either way, and that extends beyond the Academy.

I personally prefer Michelle yeoh to win best actress due to its historic nature, but I have a gut feeling cate Blanchett will get it as the academy won’t allow tar to leave empty handed in the ceremony.
