fun fact about the Beatles is that they kind of indirectly were the reason for segregation in stadiums/concert venues to end. they had it written into their contracts that they would refuse to play segregated venues, and since they were so huge at the time, the venues in the south didn't want to miss out on the money to be made by having the Beatles play so they desegregated.

Paul McCartney was the one in the black suit with a beard. You can also tell because he's the only left-handed player in the band and is usually the bassist. John Lennon is the lead singer here wearing the brown fur coat and glasses and playing the light brown guitar. George Harrison is playing the black guitar wearing the black fur coat and green trousers with a moustache. Ringo is the drummer with the red coat. They performed this above their office building in central London for the conclusion of the documentary film of them making their final released album 'Let it Be'. This was the first and last time they performed as a group since 1966 where they quit touring due to the fact that they were overbooked, had no rest, and the crowds screamed constantly so they couldn't hear themselves playing so their musicianship suffered as a result.

Really enjoyed your reaction. I really like watching young people enjoying The Beatles. If you can sit through over eight hours of a Beatles story, you need to watch the entire "The Beatles Anthology" DVD set. You both will be Beatles experts after you watch it. The roof top segment was the ending to their movie "Let It Be". They ended it with a rooftop mini concert. That was the last time The Beatles performed live. There’s a movie called Backbeat about their early days. Basically John was 15 and had a band. Paul met John right after their first performance. He was 14. He joined John’s band. He has a younger friend named George who could play a difficult chord. He joined the band. It became just the three of them. They met ringo in Hamburg Germany when John was 19. He joined the band right when they started recording a couple of years later. So basically three childhood friends plus ringo who grew up in the same city Liverpool.

Guys there is still enough live concerts and footage of the beatles.. for example I think in Australia and on a british billboard awards back in 64. John had a group that was playing at a fair at a park. His friend Ivan also knew Paul, from school and knew Paul could play guitar. John was 17 and Paul was 15. Ivan introduced them during a break and Paul played guitar for John and John was so impressed he asked Paul if he wanted to join the band, Paul said yes. Paul and George were friends at school. George also played guitar, really well so Paul introduced him to John and John heard him play and asked if he wanted to join his band and George did. Eventually, John let the original group go and him, Paul and George played. George became lead guitar at 14 yrs old. There was a drummer, Pete Best. When they were playing at a club called The Cavern, in Liverpool, Brian Epstine, saw them and offered to manage them and get them a record deal. He didn't like the way Pete played drums so he told them to find another drummer. They had had seen Ringo play with another group and asked him if he would play for them and he did. Ringo was 17, same as John. So basically, by the time they came to America, they had played together for about 5 years. They played in clubs and fairs and tv shows but in England and Germany. They were from 20 to 23 years old. So this was their last time playing together as the BEATLES. It was 1969-70 and they broke up because of a few differences. They were only 25-28 yrs old. They were a band for 7 years, the concert, Beatlemania band, but changed music forever. They were more like brothers. Sadly John got killed in 1980, George died in 2001 from Cancer. Shortly after the video starts you see British police. The crew was trying to talk them down and allow the Beatles to finish recording their session. The Bobbies were called because once the public realized it was the Beatles on the rooftop it caused a crowd and traffic problem down in the street. Billy Preston on keyboards was regarded as the Fifth Beatle. Performing on the rooftop was a spur of the moment decision and they weren't prepared for the cold so they wore their wives coats

They all grew up in Liverpool England John Lennon made a band called the Quarrymen when he was 17 and Paul McCartney Joined when he was 15, Paul and John started to write songs together and made a songwriting partnership that each of their songs will be credited to both of them it was called Lennon-McCartney Paul then got his friend George Harrison to join some time later when he was 15, they played in Clubs in Liverpool until they decided to go play in Germany as a band called the Silver-Beatles where they started to get attention, around 1960 they got an official manager named Brian Epstein and by 1962 they were offered a deal with a record company, the Beatles producer George Martin didn’t like their current drummer at the time Pete Best so Paul, George and John all decided to kick Pete Best out of the band in favor of the final member to join the Band Drummer Ringo Starr ,then they recorded their first album Please Please me in 1962 all in one 13 hour recording session which had multiple Number 1 hits on it that launched their career

John was skeptical when Paul brought George to hopefully join the band, because George was only 15 at the time and John was close to 18. correction, John and Paul didn't meet in art school. John was playing in a skiffle group he formed called The Quarrymen (named after the school he and his bandmates attended Quarrybank.) John did attend Liverpool College of Art later on, which was near The Liverpool Institute where Paul was a student. The Quarrymen were playing at a Woolton garden fete at St. Peter's Church in Liverpool, England on July 6, 1957. Paul's friend Ivan Vaughn brought Paul to the fete and introduced him to John. the rest they say, "is history"

They did do three tours of the US.It is true they couldn't hear themselves due to the screaming and the primitive amplification they had in those days. But they did do concerts. This video wasn't really a concert but a live recording session. Instead of a proper concert they did it on the roof of their record label. They played around 40 minutes before the cops made them stop. It's all in the film Let It Be. Paul is the one with the beard.

another reason why they stopped the live performances was because their music was straight up getting so complex that it was impossible to reproduce live (in the 1960s with the tech they had). The sound (echo-ey) ur hearing here is from the speakers that were set up to transmit this mini rooftop-concert. There's video of songs besides this one where cameras catch reactions of ppl on the street (ABBY ROAD) down below. When the crowd begins to gather, that's when the police intervene. This rooftop concert will forever be one of my favorites of my life. So thankful to KZbin for preserving it. Billy Preston played in some of that concert clip & we get a tiny glimpse of him now &then. I'm 70 now and I was 14 when I started following the Beatles back in 1964. He really can't be called the 5th Beatle as he only played on a few songs off Let It Be Lp, Most Beatle's fan give the 5th Beatle spot to their producer George Martin, because he was VERY much a part of the music they recorded and played piano on many of their songs. Actually, they did hundreds of live performances before 1966. You are correct in that one of the reasons they quit touring was because they couldn't hear themselves play. When the went to Japan, the crowd was different. A lot of police kept the people very reserved and the band could hear themselves. They were startled by how badly they played during the first show. They used to be tight. They got better in the next shows. What really broke them was when they went to the Philippines. The Beatles had their share of rude people throughout their career, but that incident was over the top. Their enthusiasm after that dropped to nothing. They finished the tour and packed it in August 1966 after the show at Candlestick Park. The weather wasn't good. When they loaded into the armored car after the show, even McCartney had enough.

That fifth guy was Stu Sutcliffe who unfortunately died at a very young age. He wasn’t much of a musician and actually had left the band prior to his death. He was a much better artist and his works are still occasionally put on display in Europe.

There are several Beatle bio-pics: 1) Backbeat 2) Birth Of The Beatles 3) Nowhere Boy (mainly about John Lennon 4) Two Of Us (about Lennon and McCartney post Beatles) to name just a few. I also would recommend watching A Hard Day’s Night. Though not strictly a bio-pic it’s a comedy that stars all four of them and does give a good insight into their different personalities. It was critically acclaimed by both critics and fans. The other film they starred in together was called Help and it was funny as well. Their music is featured in both films. The best documentary about them is The Beatles Anthology. You’ll learn more accurate information about their formation and career there than anywhere else in my opinion.

I'm sure someone has already told you this, but if not, the Beatles toured extensively from 1963-1966 in Europe, North America, Asia, and - I believe - even a few places in Africa. They retired from touring in 1966 due to their inability to hear themselves over the cheers. In 1967 they performed semi-live on the first world-wide satellite link-up, in 1968 performing Hey Jude, and this rooftop surprise concert in January 1969 (the police shut them down).

correction, they DID know Ringo before they asked him to be in the band. Ringo was the drummer in another Liverpool group Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. BOTH bands played in the Cavern and also in Hamburg, Germany in the seedy clubs that were in the Red Light district in Hamburg, the Reeperbahn. So they knew him, were friends with him and always admired Ringo's drumming (Ringo was a stage name he used, his real name is Richard Starkey, but because he wore 2 rings on each hand, he thought I could use "RINGO" and altered his last name from Starkey to "STARR". Ringo would occasionally sit in with them in Hamburg when their drummer Pete Best wasn't there for whatever reason. They loved the way Ringo played with them and he also fit in more personality wise with them. Sadly, just before they got their recording contract they sacked (fired) Pete and brought Ringo into the band. The rest they say is history SO they DID know Ringo as teenagers, Ringo was only 3 months older than John Lennon, RIngo was born July 7th, 1940, John on Oct. 9th, 1940, Paul McCartney on June 18, 1942 and George Harrison on Feb. 25, 1943.
