It's FINALLY Time To Build Our BARNDOMINIUM - Putting Up ALL Eight BENTS Using A CRANE And A LIFT

This is the video we have all been waiting for! All of the milling and all of the hard work has brought us to this day - standing up all 8 bents for our barndominium ( barnhouse ) using a crane, a lift and an eager crew! This is the very beginning of building our own home on our own - the timbers are now attached and we are ready!

We are milling our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. We finished the first slab last summer, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home.

***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!

A year ago, next week, my brothers and I did the same thing on a ridge in southwestern Wyoming…5 old guys assembled and raised a 4 bent guest cabin…at 8,000 feet elevation in 5 days… and only one of us having ever done it before. Very few people ever get the opportunity to build a home. It's takes a lot of planning, cash, being able to make major decisions, and commitment to make it work. The results for the effort make it worth the time and effort. Seeing this project makes we want to build a similar home. I love the timber framing. Once you start there is never turning back. Home like this will empty your bank account. I was down to my last $8,000 when my was done.

Nothing cheap about doing it yourself. Sure you save some money doing it yourself but everything else still costs a lot. But it will be worth it in the end. 😊

Great job. Brings back memories. 50 years ago, this month my wife and I did the same thing. The difference was, no crane or lift, no lasers, no nail guns. Just ropes and snatch blocks tied off to trees as she backed down the driveway in my 1st generation Bronco. Levels and plumb bobs, and within 1/8 of an inch end to end. Also, the 10 bents were two floors. I added the peak beams after, giving 3 floors plus a walk-in basement which was planned for and became a 900 sq. ft. in-law apartment. The 2nd and 3rd floors plus the entire outside of the house is 9000 sg. ft of T&G 2x6 planking. The same as used in most timber frame homes. Only 2 windows, with 9 sliders on the ends. It is 3000 sq, ft. of living space. We moved in, sophisticated camping, for Christmas

With deciding not to put bolts in the middle of your brackets, which I agree is a good decision, you may consider hurricane straps to further anchor the frame to the foundation. They help with high winds. Same with the roof. They're good for any region in the US even though they were developed for hurricanes. Slow and steady did the job!

Hi, KJ- I went back and put through bolts on the H bracket- post to concrete. But I was thinking about putting hurricane strips on the post to the rafter beam. Is that where you were thinking?

This type of situation is one reason why all new homes built in germany have a crane installed as the first order of business . they are of the swing arm variety so clearance is not an issue . the cranes remain in place until almost the comp,et ion of the project . the completion amongst crane companies is fierce which lowers the cost .

Hi, The crane was sure handy. With a structure that tall and heavy it would have been hard to build it from the ground up. From here on out we will have the bucket lift and a tele handler for most of the heavy lifting. 😊

One of the most important lessons to learn when working with a crane is to let the crane move the work. Do not move the work for the crane. As the worker who is guiding the work your job is to keep the work “square” and to prevent swinging and twisting. Your job is not to line up the work. You can give helpful guidance as in alittle north, or I need about 6 inches west. But do not push the work to get there.

Now there are exceptions to every rule. One example being the final inch or two when you are trying to land it perfectly. Or when the crane is slightly out of reach.

Hi, Philip- That was a hard lesson for the non crane operators to learn. Erik kept on telling them not to guide them into place instead of him “landing “ them into place. We were a lot more efficient by the third or fourth lift. Your comment is spot on!

@@ourdreaminthewoods Probably some sort of Norwegian tradition. Folks sometimes ask why timber framers place an evergreen bough on the peak of the frame after a raising. The short answer--tradition. But I'll take a stab at the long answer, since there isn't much information out there about this tradition. "Topping off" a new frame is a practice that has been around for hundreds of years. It's the act of placing a bough on the highest peak of a newly completed frame. The bough is always an evergreen. I have used pine, cedar, magnolia, and even a discarded Christmas tree. Ask ten timber framers about topping off the frame and you'll get ten slightly different answers. But the common thread is that the whetting bush is placed as a symbol of thanksgiving and respect. Some say it gives thanks to the forest for providing timber for a new home. Some say it gives thanks for a safe raising. A few simply say it's "good luck." Whatever their beliefs are, topping off the frame is a special time for each person. For the folks starting life in a new home, it can be almost like a dedication ceremony. For the carpenters who built the frame, it's a chance to stand back and see the fruit of their labor. For everyone present, it's a moment of celebration. (Found this for you)

So the first thing I do if I was in your shoes lay on floor Joyce on 2nd floor so lost in the main part of house shop and then do beams on the sides of the house and start working to get roof on as fast as you can and that would be my plan you do not have use it , it is just what I would do lol

I cannot believe you did not have new angled T-shaped larger bolt plates made to connect the roof pitched members to the verticals and get rid of those woefully undersized plates before you raised the bents in place. There is no way those meet code

Hi, Chris- The wise thing would have been to put a bigger plate on that joint. But with timeline and an effort to be dried in by late fall, I couldn’t make it happen. We added two 12” screws and plan on putting some hurricane strips on those joints. No structural inspections up here - but it doesn’t mean we don’t want to build to code. Doing the best we can. 😁

@@ourdreaminthewoods You could have the bigger steel plates cut now while you are working on other aspects of construction and when the steel plates are ready rent a boom lift to install them one side at a time before you button up the structure. The last thing you want is for your roof to fail after putting in so much time and sweat equity because of something that is easily remedied.
