Great to see LIT taking these older boats and reusing them to the fullest. Although its sad to see these classics go, LIT has a history of refurbishing them and using them until no longer possible.

You did a beautiful job on honoring her as a Great Lakes veteran. She will live on through personal memories, photos and videos. She will never be forgotten. 🫡❤

What a fantastic ship she was. How great if she could have been preserved as a museum ship! So sad she will be taken apart. Scrapped is awful sounding for this ship. Thank you for sharing this awesome video!

She served well, and she served with pride. She certainly deserved a better fate Than The Scrappers torch but then again, progress marches on. She'll be reduced to a pile of scrap metal but she will live in the mines and the memories of those of us who had seen her, and loved her rest in peace and thank you, steamship!

I grew up on the Straights Of Mackinaw and used to see her pass the house all the time. From my vantage point I could see from the Poe Reef Lighthouse to the Mackinaw Bridge. One of the things I remember the most is seeing the plume of black smoke from the coal burners on the horizon well before you would see the ship itself.

I didn't realize this ship with such a great history is so recently heading for scrap. I see it was converted from coal to oil in 1995 and does have a triple expansion steam engine that faithfully served her. I do hope that the engine makes it to a museum or better yet a steam club where it can be displayed. Best info I found was at Shipwatchers News Great Lakes Ships which had good info and pics on her. I sure hope someone tries to find a good home for the historic engine. Thanks for the excellent video.

Would have been nice to use as a floating museum somewhere around Detroit.

I don't think you can make any more off a cargo ship like that. Even the Queen Mary is struggling and she is what was a fancy ocean liner in her day. If people aren't interested to visit Queen Mary enough for that ship to turn a profit, how many people are really going to visit a old bulk carrier cargo ship? Honestly ships seem like they are some of the most difficult and expensive things to put into preservation, even more so then trains and maybe even planes. It's probably why not many ships survive past then service life, they are just to difficult and expensive to work with.

The old girl isn't dying, she's being re-formed into many useful things. Part of her may be in the next new car you buy, or in the steel beam being hoisted up for the new building downtown. The old lakers certainly had a character about them that is sad to see disappear. (One could say the same about so many things.) I may have missed it in the video; when was the S.T. Crapo's last revenue run?

That old lifeboat didn't look to be in great shape. One thing you would always expect to be in good shape, even a ship being retired is the lifeboat. You'd think the company would replace the lifeboats every so often with new ones because god forbid the ship ever sinks, the lifeboat is the crews only chance to survive.
