No a ball can be touched over the tryline by ant part of body between waiste and neck. control of the ball only comes into question if the ball is knocked FOREWARD

Try should have been awarded. Stormers player knocked the ball forward, so backwards for the carrier. Carrier falling on the ball completes the score. Only question could be, when the player fell on the ball, was the ball either on the line or over it. If so, it's a try.

@@notyoureverydaycultist2579 It would be a knock-on if the ball went forward from the ball carrier's hand after being knocked forward by the defender. This did not happen, so it cannot be a knock-on by the attacking player. The only reason the referee could disallow the try would be if he did not see clear grounding of the ball by the attacker, either on or over the goal line. In this case a scrum to the attacking side would have been the correct call.

It was onfield decission try so the actually question is can you see any reason not to award the try. wether or not you see grounding in replay is irrelevant as it has to be clear and obvious that a try has not been scored.

@@stormersbrain4746 You dont need control of ball to score a try. Lost control of the ball only applies if the ball goes forward. the law book doesnt have the words lost control in it. the ball can be grounded by any part of the body between neck and waist

Thats another thing I dont understand. If the opponent, in this case blue, never had the ball in his hands how could it be a knock-on? Deliberately knocking a ball out of an opponents hand is just part of defense I would argue, its the ball carrier's responsibility to keep it in possession, the opponent's to rip it out or dislodge it. If the ball is knocked down/forward after being passed that is another story.

Still dont think it is a try. There was no hand on the ball anymore, just got stuck under his chest uncontrolled. If you only have to use your chest, then by all means its a try. But then again, why just stop with the chest, why not your belly, leg or just step on it? Main thing was he lost control, there was a disconnect he definitely didnt have the ball under control anymore when he fell on it.

100% correct, just wondering why they not showing the alternative angle which clearly shows HD hits the hand. From the get go of this video they insist it was knocked by looking at one angle, so the rest of discussusion is based on that false basis. Terrible analysis

@@cobusbrits2 You dont need to be in control. therefor can dive with any part of body between neck and waist on a ball over the try line and the try will be scored. "losing control" really means knocking in forward in the attempt of a try score.

The Stormers player was behind his line. If he knocked the ball towards the dead ball line it would have been a knock on. This he knocked the ball BACKWARDS. So how are they saying that it was a knock on? Bloody confusing!

The White player clearly loses the ball, it gets dislodged. If this was awarded as a try, can a player now score a try if he looses the ball backwards by placing his foot on the ball ? Or with his elbow. This was clearly loosing the ball, not a deliberate knock down by blue, so no penalty. Neither was it a knock on by white, but the ball was over the in goal line. I would have called it the same as a ball being held up in the in goal.

It's irrespective because you can't intentionally knock the ball out and forward of the oppositions hands, technically this is a professional foul from blue as he knocks the ball forward and in a downward motion in a try scoring situation. Penalty try to Ulster

its either a knock on by blue or a drop backward by white. what ever way you look at it the ball never went forward from ulster and thats the only thing that matters. the lawbook states a try can be scored with any part of the torso between neck and waist for example if you dive on a ball that has been kicked through.

people how many times have we seen in rugby when the player loses the ball and it goes straight down, the ref always rules it as a knock on even during normal play. this has happened many times to the SA teams in the early stages of the URC and no one complained so lets just move on and stop bitching about somethung that we cannot control

Unfortunate that it was a result-changer. I think Ulster can feel hard done by; but the spirit of the game should rule. These official 'conferences' should have a time-limit; say 30 seconds, specifically to counter the referee's decision. The referee must be in charge of the game, or else next we will be having lawyers in wigs and gowns on the touchlines, with the United Nations in the background.

The simple fact is, Ulster are better than the Stormers and won that game, the TMO was bias! That is why the TMO has been called into questioning and the referee commissioner, who is a South African, said it was a try!
