I did also .and still did for the first two years of his management .only this season have I seen a major improvement in the way Ireland play .for to long after Farrell took over he stayed with the Schmidt gameplay of bash bash rugby no offloads and no risk .he's finally letting them play with more freedom and show their talents .I think Paul O'Connell also played apart in change of game plan

It takes A LOT for the losing side to be so gracious and to recognise when they've been roundly beaten, but even more so for a panel of speakers who're "used to" winning. This is the best thing for rugby in general 👏, I'm gutted that the ABs lost but Ireland dominated every where on the field. This is the new standard of rugby and the ABs aren't up with the game. Well done Ireland, only very few can win in New Zealand let alone a series win 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Absolutely, this will help the ABs and is a real wake up call. I am Irish and 63 years old and never have I been so excited about international rugby. Well said, John Kirwan. Ireland had 5 clear try scoring chances in the first test. Execution let them down.If they had come off New Zealand may have lost. Test 1 result was an aberration. 42 points actually flattered the ABs
@ryanway9346
@ryanway9346 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Although I would add, the start of the second-half in game 3 was also very potent from the ABs. I personally still think they're the most dangerous attack when they're clicking (no other side can pile points the rate they do), but Ireland are just a better overall side right now.... ABs defense is no good, their tactics and execution is weak for majority of the game.. Don't have much faith in them for the world cup tbh.
@MrWillt100
@MrWillt100 2 жыл бұрын
No not an aberration it actually happened and I watched it. Everyone in the world knows that when the All Blacks are in the zone watch out whoever they are playing cause they'll punish you and punish you very badly if you let them, so don't insult the All Blacks by saying that win was an aberration cause the whole world saw it and so did you.
@williamwalker3837
@williamwalker3837 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrWillt100 I saw anIrish team on the try line at 7-0. Ireland made an intercepted pass. ABs broke away and scored an opportunistic try. TOTALLY against the run of play. Instead of a certain 14-0 to Ireland it was now 7-7. On 4 other occasions Ireland failed to score CERTAIN tries. Fine margins viz a failure to execute meant the initiative was given to the ABs. Yes, the ABs took their chances. But everyone, including John Kirwan, could see that if Ireland sorted out those marginal issues they had the beatings of the ABs. And so it transpired. So in the context of the 3 games the first test was an aberration. The ABs are and have been a fine team. I for one would never insult that great history. However, thats where it stops. ABs have no devine right. They are just 15 men on a pitch carrying an oval ball. Ireland were the better team over the 3 games on this occasion. Ireland now have NO FEAR of the ABs. They and future Irish teams will always feel they can beat the ABs, which can only be a good thing for rugby. For the above I totally stand by my original point.

I thought the comment by Dane Coles in his interview post the 3rd Test that "we gave them a good hiding" in the 1st Test, revealed a lot about the AB's mindset. Clearly they did not give them "a good hiding" and the scoreline was not reflective of the game. Ire had 60% possession and 60% Territory in that game (75% in the 2nd half) ... they clearly underestimated the Irish and thought that they just had to show up .... let the Irish make mistakes and win ..... that is not a winning philosophy and comes down to management not hammering home the 'reality' of how good the Irish actually were .. IMHO.

I'm an Ireland fan and its a great achievement, but I actually see this result as more of an indication of where New Zealand are. Ireland lacked ruthlessness in the six nations, and I think they had more quality and variation in years gone by. Intensity-wise though, that Ireland pack is the greatest its ever been. Its evident when Leinster demolish Ulster in the League play-offs each year... Where I noticed it most was in the France-Ireland game in this years 6 Nations. It was pulsating, brutal stuff, from both teams. And watching Conan, Ryan, Beirne, Henderson et al put their bodies on the line, was something else!

SA perspective. When Alistair Coetzee lost 57-0 in Albany (we still have the shakes), we collectively reached our limit and were going nowhere after his two years in charge. Tumbling down the rankings. Was simply unacceptable and we didn’t need a review, Rassie was appointed and the rest is history. Do not fall for the trap of supporting the coach when the country has collectively realised it’s simply no longer All Black rugby. Just like we got humbled … the ABs have been humbled. A red line has been crossed. What more do you need to see or know? A drubbing in SA? There was a series loss against Ireland at home, first loss to Argentina, humbled in Dublin and Paris, SA wins and draws on Nz turf, outplayed in 2019 semi, last minute one point wins, etc, etc. The writing has been on the wall for two years now. Back to basics time and cut out the rot.

From an English perspective. Ireland were superb; the combination of set processes and play-as-you-see was exceptional. Core skills were at a very high level. Plus whilst having players, mainly/mostly from 2 teams (Leinster/Munster) should be much easier than from a group of 10 or so - although I have to admit that Scotland and France disprove this. So, for me, it has to be a combination of very good players (although not necessarily the best in the world at each position) and excellent coaching (at both provincial and national level). Good on Ireland - now go on and repeat this in France next year. I look forward to 2024. Farrell managing Ireland and Roman O Gara managing England.

Sad reality for New Zealand is that the team is just a top international team instead of being one of the best teams ever. You've had 8-10 years of 5-6 players who were probably in the top 5 all time in their positions . They all aged together and have been replaced with decent players but, one of the issues is all the top teams have decent players. The other issue is that everyone else has caught up with NZ level of fitness. They no longer blow decent teams away in the last 15 mins of games.

In NZ its unacceptable. Losing to Ireland as a fan doesn't worry me so much as they are a fantastic team. What worries me is the team's collective lack of progress over two years which has eaten into the ABs confidence and their mojo. SOUTH AUCKLAND PAIN I'm a Kiwi who lives in Australia and that's what I said to an Irish man I met at a kebab shop after the game on Saturday night! I'd mentioned to the man who served me that the All Blacks lost, then the Irish one next to me (his strong accent gave it away) stated that it was GOOD and GOOD for rugby too. Lol. He wasn't happy about what I'd said either, which was understandable, so I quickly replied that it's what we say when we lose. I kindly congratulated his team AGAIN and was relieved to see the smile back on his face before grabbing my kebab, then leaving as fast as I could without running. 😁

Having had the pleasure of being to New Zealand and meeting lots of Kiwis as far as I’m concerned they are the nicest people you could possibly meet. Having said that I find their attitude to rugby slightly unhealthy. They assume they should have a god given right to win every game. The fact that it has been said that losing to Ireland is “unacceptable” just shows to me a lack of respect for the opposition and a high level of arrogance that “we NZ should win because we are the best”. They are still a good team and will be back.

I see what you're saying about us thinking we should win , but in my eyes that isn't arrogance , it's expectation based on experience . I believe that we have held a certain national pride , a thought that we , little old us , from the bottom of the world were better than anyone else at SOMETHING ! What is happening at the moment is a lot of kiwi's haven't yet grasped the fact that there is a new reality , the rugby world has changed and we are struggling to adjust . It''s a little hard for some kiwi's to swallow , the more rabid among us tend to equate All Black success to life or death . Congratulations to Ireland , you deserve all the accolades , the best team in the world right now bar none and have worked bloody hard for the success you are enjoying . @@rscoops3986 I know there's quite an audience for "attacking flair", and I always advise such people to watch either League or especially Sevens-both smorgasbords of all the attacking flair you can eat! Union is a different game in that it requires a wider range of skills, and players specialized in subsets of them. This results in an opportunity to coalesce those different elements into a cohesive whole. That's neither good nor bad, it's just different. It looks like teams are getting better at this overall, which makes Union a more interesting complex game, with far more room for intelligence as well as brilliance. I take it you're new to the sport? NZ have mostly been one of the most cynical teams since I started watching ~50 years ago, with significant help from referees overawed by their aura. Probably the most cynical era was the McCaw one, he was a master of playing past the edge and manipulating refs. But the age of 'shamateurism' was pretty low too. Anyway, to each their own. French rugby fan here. My 2 cents: not to take away anything from Farrrell (who is a great coach), a big factor to how good Ireland are is that their are basically playing with the same players (bar a couple of Munster / Conacht players) and style as Leinster. Meaning these guys play together, and a similar system all year long and find each other with closed eyes. They were fantastic on the night. The AB's, on the other hand, look very disjointed and what really shocked me is how inaccurate they were. Now this is a team that still has class players all around, and one really has to question the coaching team if they can't extract a better performance from this group.

Since the Irish won the 2009 Grand slam they have slowly but surely getting better and better despite a few ups and downs but finally we've stopped dropping the ball when in or near the opposition goal line which is a big reason for this victory because when the All Blacks got back to 1 point normally we'd give away the match but this time when we got the player back on we went up the other side and got a try and 3 more points to win the game and IMHO the All Blacks looked a bit lost for the first time in a Long long time.

Aust and NZ both wanted the SAR teams to stay but understood why SAR headed to the Northern hemisphere. The ABs have coaching issue not a player issue, Remember your own issue in SAR when your coach Coetzee was replaced by Rassie in 2018 and turned the whole team around 2019 to win the RWC. The forwards create the opportunities that the backs can exploit, provided they don’t knock it on and have to rely on the forwards to get the ball back. Ireland played as a cohesive unit. Yes playing rugby in opposition 22 makes sense, but not knowing that very few other teams that have beaten Ireland employing this tactic, because of a very capable back three under high ball, well It smacks of poor tactical leadership. Possible Lowe is the weakest link but if he gets it, he punishes severely with the boot. If they felt they had to kick, grubbers behind the rush defence was the way to go. They didn’t try it once. They needed open play and did punish Ireland when they got it, but rarely created it rather latched onto Ireland few defensive mistakes and yellow card. Ireland are weaker out wide and in the scrum although both area’s are improving. The fact that the centre pairing could never really get it to the wing is a problem. You have such weapons on the wings, yet there was not even one short kick behind to the wings to spread the Irish D. The fact that Ireland, a weaker scrummaging team than France, England and SA bossed the ABs pack should be the most worrying aspect of all. I fear the Safa’s are going to pummel you into submission here so possession will likely be less than Ireland afforded. For me, my second favourite team after Ireland have lost their way a bit. I really hope they sort the current short comings.They have the talent.

Completely agree with you. As an ireland fan I know we are not one of the most physically dominant packs in the world yet we looked like physical powerhouses once we sorted out some of the scrum issues from the first test. The France and SA packs may tear the Abs pack apart.

@14:26 "We gave Ireland a good hiding in the first game" says Dane Cole!.....No you didn't mate! You had a purple patch of about 10 mins and were gifted a couple of tries thro Irish mistakes but that final scoreline flattered NZ. There was no "hiding! ....Except the TWO HIDINGS that Ireland gave NZ in the 2nd and 3rd games...and in fact in most of the recent games between the two nations have been HIDINGS by Ireland!!

Ireland lost 42-19 in the first test thats 23 pts, when the ABs lost the next two tests they lost by margins of 11 and 10 positions respectively. Loosing by 23 pts in an international test is a wee bit of drubbing (hiding). Equally the excuses you used for Ireland losing NZ ccould also use even though it was a far less margin. If NZ lost by 23 pts in a test we would be brave enough to say we got a "hiding" and I'm sure the Irish team were brave enough to admit it and equally brave enough to rectify the problems. Kudos to Ireland in the series win, we'll done.

The Irish are world class team. They deserve to win. We need to make changes quickly. Foster is not cutting it. Razor Robertson and Leon MacDonald would work well together. In great all black teams of the past we have had the edge in the loose forwards. We need great trio of loose forwards. Sam Cane is not up to standard anymore. Savea is world class.Dalton Papalii should be starting. We need props that don’t give away stupid penalties. We don’t need players that tackle peoples heads. These players are liability. We need a team that wins line out ball. We need a team that wins scrum ball.

It’s the same thing that people have been saying about the ABs in the whole Ian Foster era. His system is static, it doesn’t move and flow the way the best teams in the world do (Ireland, France, SA). It’s a system that relies on the talent elevating the system instead of the system elevating the talent. Sad to see, as an American, because the ABs are immensely talented and it feels wasted by playing a system that would’ve been successful 5 years ago.

Jacob Shafer I totally agree with others that this is well put and Ian Foster wasn't there for the first game, which says a lot as well! I do have empathy for him as person, yet my feelings are stronger for the players and fellow supporters, as the All Blacks are beyond a rugby team to most New Zealanders. I'd be offering to leave if I was Ian Foster, but I'm obviously not him and he might not be allowed to do so anyway. 🖤

In the past if we scored early v NZ I'd think "I hope we havnt made them mad" we could have a lead and I wonder how would we lose it.... but I knew once we won a game wh would be able to do it again. Now if we play better than the ABs we will win in the past the ABs would win no matter how well or poorly they played.

I get sticking with the coach, especially because of tradition, but if you're the AB's you just have to realistic about the situation. Yes, it would be tough for anybody to follow Hansen and replace the sheer quality of players he lost to retirement, let alone former stars who are nowhere near close to their best anymore. It would be a huge task for anybody. But, fact is, Foster got the job off the recommendation of Hansen with a desire to keep continuity, and in that time, what can you say that Foster has achieved? Has the team been reinvigorated? No. Have they evolved with the times? No. What exactly are the tactics? Quick ball from Smith and...that's it? Waiting for Barrett to intercept or Reece / Jordan to make something out of nothing is not a sustainable way to win. The historic losses have been well documented, but in games against the fellow big sides, they've been decidedly outclassed in pretty much every single one. Bossed by Ireland and France, close score lines against Boks and Wallabies, but did you ever feel they were gonna win? I didn't. Thing is, people are turning on Foster because he already wasn't a popular choice when he was given the job. But, I also like to think fans were smarter than that. They saw the game changing direction to the way France, Ireland, South Africa are playing now. Those teams evolved, learned from the AB's and took the game to the next level. Having somebody like Robertson would've ensured that they stayed ahead of the curve, but the safe approach ultimately led to this. If they sack Foster now, it's just gonna be Joe Schmidt ball and who knows if that is even sustainable.

Totally agree. I think the frustration as an AB's fan hasn''t been the losses, but the directionless nature of them and the lack of any clear improvements over the past 1-2 years. It may be a hail-mary option to change the coaches, but I don't see the point of continuing with the current set up either. Tough place for us to be tbh!

Foster was never the man for the job, they should have picked Scott Robertson but they were too comfortable and wanted continuity with Foster but look what that has gotten them. Better to cut your losses now and work on evolving with the times.

Not so much that this is a weak AB side but arguably best Ireland performance we have ever seen in NZ. Congrats due to Ireland ... NZ cannot expect the consistent superiority it has displayed in the past but increasingly - cards permitting - rugby will be more competitive. Best therefore to temper our reactions and enjoy the game for what it is ... as we used to.
