That was the main problem with the original book and direction. Unless you've seen the movie and/or read the novel, you had no idea what the hell was happening.

@@sindelscat9336 because they yet again, didn't put out what they had originally written and composed, and let other people tell them what needed to happen to it. if they had kept and put out all of the score, and the book and stayed true to the script that was written and composed in the1988 workshops, than it would work, cause if they had done the sets and costumes straight out of the movie, and stayed in the 1980's worlds of both book and film, it would have worked much better.

So frustrating how the critics have never given this show a fair shake. To be able to make such an amazing musical from anything by Stephen King was a huge deal to start with. So many amazing leading ladies have played Margaret White. And they have all done such amazing jobs. And, to have one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written for a musical. "When There's No One" is a tear jerking piece of work. I cry everytime I hear it. I always loved Betty Buckley's performance, and will always be a huge fan of one of the greatest Broadway Dames of all times. But, to hear Marin Mazie's rendition, it's simply heartbreaking. She brings the emotion that this beautiful ballad was needing. I think the critics need to give this amazing show a break, and the credit it truly deserves. It's so long overdue!

Well take this clip: if the setting was in the household or even just darkness with spot lights on both Margaret and Carrie, this ending could have been so heartbreaking. But, instead, they chose to have it play out on some weird gigantic white staircase that made absolutely no sense. It's production decisions like that which ultimately killed the show.

Amen. Agreeing with all of you here. The 2012 fixed the odd awful parts ....the Carrie+Margaret moments from 1988 were perfection by the time Betty Buckley joined .... Proud to be a Crazy Fan

@bnm73me To be fair, the show only lost money because investors pulled out, so they couldn't continue running. The several performances they had were all sold out, and the run at Stratford was as well.

Apparently the audience on Broadway was very divided. Betty Buckley and Charlotte D'Amboise have both told stories of how they heard both cheers and boos coming from the audience at curtain call.

really love the last scene as it shows so much of motherly love. even though Margaret was a hush mother it still shows her loving side. I wonder how it would end if carrie accidentally kills her mom as it looks like the stopping of the heart was on purpose. plus this did not show a mother killing her daughter so it would have been better if it was an accidentally kill then a one that was on purpose.

No, Margaret actually DOES stab Carrie in the back like in the book (well, it was shoulder) and movie, except it's damn hard to see it because they're perched so high up on that staircase. That was one of the criticisms the original staging got.

@@evanwall1128 agree agree agree agree. It's even my opinion that the boo-ing we've all heard about (at the end) was the audience hating that Carrie dies --- not showing hate for the show, but hating that our lead avenged herself and then dies. 💖😭❤❤❤❤❤❤🙌

That's a fair point. I saw the last night at Stratford and before the cast left the stage at the end, I recall a male member of the cast saying something like "the critics didn't like it but the audiences have been great". I wouldn't say the mood was that we had seen a classic, but we had certainly seen something brave and ambitious, that had some memorable highlights and was worrthy of respect.

It's a mix of metaphors. Most commonly it's the Stairway to Heaven, which explains why Margaret is descending down it since she's Carrie's equivalent to God. Also the fact that both Carrie and Margaret die on it. But in story it's meant (at least from what I heard) to be the roof of the school, which Carrie collapsed after killing everyone at the prom.
