Paris Aeneas and Helen try to escape the city. Paris sends Aeneas and Helen ahead while he tries to find his family.
Paris discovers his mother, Hecuba, kneeling by Priam’s body. She refuses to leave her husband and tells Paris that Priam never blamed him for what happened. She doesn’t want Paris to die with them.
As Greek soldiers approach, Paris screams for Hecuba to run, before trying to escape himself.
Paris is shot down by Menelaus.
Helen runs to her lover, begging him not to die. They speak lovingly to each other, reprising the songs: ‘Trust in your heart’ and ‘Hell or High water’.
Agamemnon attempts to cut off Paris’ head to take as a war trophy. He is stopped by Menelaus, who is horrified by his cruelty.
Menelaus realises that Helen loved Paris, she hadn’t been taken against her will.
He is guilt stricken by the pain he caused her in his blindness.
He reprises a verse that was originally sung by Helen in ‘a long time coming’, showing he now understands how she felt trapped by her former life.
Helen sings quietly to Paris as he dies. She breaks off into tears on the line ‘love has power’.
The chorus, starting quietly but gathering strength, echoes the sentiment ‘love has power’. Both to bring joy and destruction.
