According to dev interviews, Odin was the first ever Summon devised by Square all the way back during FFIII's development over 30 years ago now. They wanted to implement a gameplay feature where you the player got the power of the game's monsters, and thus the Summoning magic mechanic was implemented. Odin's art design in FFIII was taken from the monster sprite designs they had available, when it was later brought up that Odin wasn't typically known for using a sword they just kind of shrugged it off as Rule of Cool.
@Dracobyte Жыл бұрын
Where did you read this?
@twelfthknight Жыл бұрын
@@Dracobyte I got it from Ludiscere excellent retrospective on FFIII, though he was referencing an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka on the FFIII 30th Anniversary which you can find on the Final Fantasy website. According to Tanaka the first summon they created used some of Amano's art of horseback knight that they had conveniently sitting around. One of the members of the design team who did a lot of the Western-style naming for the monsters and such called him Odin. So, yeah, the divergence of Odin's FFIII design from his mythology roots and the decisively non-Norse inspired "Zantetsuken" are both products of a team creating this new mechanic with what they had available to them rather than an actual Odin-inspired character and why his iconography in Final Fantasy has been split between this original Amano monster design and the Sleipnir-riding spear-wielding version.

When Odin came as a part of collab with PSO2, he can appear at the end of his quest or just pops out of nowhere like many bosses in PSO2, the combat is basically identical with XIV but the player is much more mobile as it's an action-RPG, the best part of Odin is that the map he appears on can be on any map, including ones where multiple parties can be in at the same time, and the Zantetsuken can hit the entire map, so if you just happen to be unlucky enough to be on the other side of the map from a player that fails to take down Odin before Zantetsuken happens, you'll just die then and there Side note, while Odin takes the head of the last final hitter, he don't take the body in PSO2

To be fair that was mostly just lore found in the underworld Land of Summons that you could find in a book shelf that spoke of a battle between Ramuh (Indra) and Odin where Odin was defeated when "Lighting struck his blade" but in countless playthroughs I never saw an actual weakness to lightning. It was mostly flavor text.

FF Odin has another major design inspiration that's pretty easy to overlook if you're not familiar with Japanese history (or at least familiar with Sengoku era shows/games). Honda Tadakatsu was venerated as one of the strongest warriors of the era with a lot of myth built up around him. He was notable for wearing a very ornate deer antler helmet, allegedly never got a serious wound, and used a sword and spear. Granted, these are kind of weak connections, but I think they make up for the majority of where FF Odin strays visually from the Norse myth. This last point seems more like a coincidence than anything intended, but the Samurai Warriors 4 and Pokemon Conquest depictions of Honda have him in white armor with gold trim, not too dissimilar to many of the versions of FF Odin.

You can even acquire the sword after beating the fate. Then in Stormblood, during the Baldesion Arsenal in Eureka you fight against Raiden, an upgraded Odin, and just like with the Zantetsuken, the Primal Weapon, Shin-Zantetsuken, can be acquired from the fight. But that's not all. In the final Patch of Shadowbringers, a new Variant, Lunar Odin, is fought as part of the mainstory, bringing him into the Mainstory, where he was originally just optional content.

In Final Fantasy XIV, Odin is actually the Sword (Zantetsuken) and not the person. This is explained in the Urth's Fount story and then expanded upon in the Eureka story. Odin is a living weapon created by the ancient Allagan Empire - along with many other notable entities such as Absolute Virtue, Raiden, and Ozma. In his dormant state, Odin rests as the Sword Zantetsuken and then possesses whoever wields the sword - this is why each time he is encountered in the FATE he looks like whoever landed the killing blow in the previous encounter. Odin also appears as a summon in Heaven on High - a deep dungeon introduced in Stormblood. Here he can be summoned with the Elder Magicite. When summoned, Odin performs Zantetsuken which will kill every enemy on the current floor (even Bosses).

I dunno whether this has been already mentioned, but according to the Ultimania Guides, FFV happens to be the first time Tetsuya Nomura contributed to the series as a creature designer (with notes on his designs of Shinryu, Omega and other monsters being prominently featured in the FFV chapter of the guide book). Given that Nomura's style was later judged better suited to adapt into polygonal shapes than Yoshitaka Amano's, the appearance of Odin in FFVII might be either a nod to it's FFV iteration or simply a pragmatical decision by Nomura himself, since he would only need to adapt his own earlier design from 2D into 3D.

As a guy who loves all things Norse Mythology. Even find myself praying to Odin, Thor or Freya from time to time. I’ve never been a fan of FF’s designs on Odin. Anyone who’s read the Eddas knows how he looks like. He’s depicted is a one-eyed, white-bearded god wearing a cloak and a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a spear. Not a ugly looking demon demon with large horns, *2* red eyes, using a sword and shield. Oh, and Sleipnir has 8 legs. Not 4 or 6. And I’m very lenient on other artists take on known gods or fictional characters, but FF isn’t even in the same ball park of what Odin is supposed to look like. That being said, I think the World of FF and FF16 Odin look cool and have one eye, at least. Which I could say the same about the others
@mechanomics2649 Жыл бұрын
It's a good thing that FF never purported to be accurate to Norse Mythology then, isn't it? It's fine for what it is. Also, saying that none of the Odin's outside of the two you mentioned don't look cool is certainly a take.

Interesting side note on the FF14 appearance. The primal Odin is actually not the man and horse, but the sword itself. That's how he's been defeated so many times but keeps returning (and why the fate version in the open world has the physical appearance of whatever player landed the killing blow on the fate's last spawn). The sword was created by the box in Eureka.

Fun fact about Odin from FFXIV: in Yoshi P's original roadmap plan for ARR, which can still be found somewhere online I think, Odin was meant to grow stronger every time he was defeated and drop better and better loot. That never came to pass sadly, but I won't ever forget. One of the few promises they didn't deliver on (like Primals being summonable in giant Fates and the FC who defeats could summon it, changing the weather of the zone, which also didn't happen, but you can see the foundation for it in certain Fates like in southern thanalan, where tehres a fate chain that implies Ifirits about to be summoned, but never leads to it.) Also, Odin in the Fate will adopt the player race of the character who delivered the killing blow last time he was defeated, and carry their name in a moniker beneath his name. And the Trial was added later after lots of players asked to be able to fight Odin whenever they wanted, instead of waiting around for a Fate to spawn, which is like, on a weekly timer I think? Also the Fate can't be tracked on the map until you're very close to it, requiring players to work together to locate it; also when Odin is up, the weather of the entire Shroud will change to 'tension.' Also, defeating Odin in teh Fate gets you items you can trade in at Mor Dhona to get his gear I think, or trophies of it? I dont rmbr exactly. Its been awhile lol.

Really awesome one guys, just a couple things missed (or maybe I didn't hear you right) - in 9, Garnet can get a passive that makes Odin deal Wind damage should he fail to kill - And in XI he is the literal God of Darkness (and the main antagonist really by extension of his previous actions). When you go to summon him in-game, his spell icon has the Darkness symbol and I'm pretty sure he's weak to Light damage during the fight (been ages since I fought him) He also requires Astral Flow to be used and consumes the ability along with all your MP just like Alexander, except in his case the amount of MP consumed determines the chance of instant kill/damage (and he deals darkness damage rather than non-elemental I believe) One fun fact you missed was during the fight vs Odin Prime, he will do a monologue before using Zantetsuken and if you /kneel or /heal before he finishes you won't die.

Me neither! It's a minor thing, but, coming from someone who has done that sidequest, a lot, it's not a big deal, lol!

Y'know what always had me wondering? How did Seifer manage to counter Zantetsuken of ALL things, but then still lose to the party? Maybe he spent all his luck tokens, Idk

Think you could do a Evolution of Ramuh given that he is a part of Final Fantasy 16 and is a major summon in many Final Fantasy games? Also will you do a break down of the Final Fantasy State of Play from yesterday?

Echoing a few other comments on here. Odin is historically not Loki's father. Blood brother if anything. Marvel is the populator of Loki and Thor being brothers likely because Loki and Thor have a few poems where they travel together. But they were never brothers.

I did not save before I faced Odin in FF4 (SNES FF2 in my realm). I still haven't forgiven myself!

I don't usually leave comments like this and maybe I'll delete it because I wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of the creators, but I feel like so many of Final Fantasy Union's videos are just... Rote recitations of facts. There's like, no flavor, no meaning, no window into what the topic is really about. They're just 30 minute audible Wikipedia entries. "The Chocobo first appeared in this game. The Chocobo would reappear again, this time as a summon monster. The Chocobo showed up once again, this time as a companion." Like, I love Final Fantasy, and I love long encyclopedic explanations of things within the Final Fantasy series. I think examining the growth and differences between the versions of recurring characters and themes is a fantastic video concept, but the last dozen or so videos I've seen from FF Union are just so bland and meandering. It's like they're just reciting a list of Wikipedia bullet points without conveying what's actually interesting about the topic or the character. It's started to feel like every video is a college student padding an essay about Final Fantasy topics. It's just... Lists of facts.

I get what you mean there’s not much to these characters beyond what he’s said. Most of the time they’re just attacks in the game or background characters. What else more is there to delve into, even if you want meaning behind them there usually isn’t to begin with

@@extra4542 Its just rote recitation of bullet points. I actually care about the source material and even I'm bored. There's just no real meaning, no flare, no point of view. Like, look at Lindsay Ellis' Loose Canon videos. She's telling you about certain characters (i.e. wicked witch of the west, phantom of the opera, etc.) appearances over a length of time, but she isn't just reading you a list of facts, she's talking about them, about what makes them interesting, about how and why they changed.

Yeah, no offense to the KZbinr who runs this channel, but it would be great if there was more of the KZbinr in the video, if that makes sense; like he could mention his own opinions/experiences with whatever he's talking about, maybe joke about them in someway? I dunno, but act like it's an actual fan of Final Fantasy talking to us, and sharing the nostalgia or whatever? I mean here, okay, he talks about the history of Odin, but what is his opinion of Odin? Does he have a favorite version? Did anything happen while playing the game concerning this summon? It is what you say it is, a spoken article. Semi-Related: It always bewilders me when people make the opposite complaint to what you did on videos where there is more character, and saying there's too much talking about the subject, because I would say that's the beauty of KZbin - you're getting an actual person with actual opinions and experience with the subject talking about it.
