White Mages are one of THE quintessential job classes and they were introduced with the original game all the way back in 1987. Since then, White Mages have been a mainstay in the franchise, appearing in copious amounts of games in one shape or another, including Final Fantasy II, IV and IX. Many characters have also featured White Mage as a secondary focus, such as Aerith, Garnet and Yuna and the MMORPGs have fleshed White Mages out in a significant manner.

My older sister, who doesn't even game, even loves White Mage. But she's biased because she's an actual doctor. She was first introduced to the concept of WHM way back when I was playing FF1 on NES in the early 90's. She never got into playing the game, but she really dug the WHM's sprite. Many MANY moons later after we had both grown up, I offered to cover her Halloween costume one year. By then she was a nurse pursuing her doctorate and I got her a staff and WHM robe to wear to a Halloween party. I did my best to cobble together a Paladin costume so I could be her tank(this was 05, at the height of my FFXI addiction). It worked perfectly, as she was a nurse and I was cop. Healer and protector. She loved how I fit that together. 16 years later, and she still has that old robe in a jersey frame in her house, hung on the wall with the picture of us at that party. I recently got my 15 yr old niece into FFXIV and she started as WHM. I imagine that choice was at least influenced by that display in her family room.

i was going to mention this as the possible reason white mage had red, because in ff1 white mages all appeared to be women, and the shrine maiden traditionally wore red and white clothes. this would also make sense with the dancer mix from revenent wings, as miko shamenism used ritual dances.

I like how Final Fantasy XIV made Aero, Water, and Stone tied to White Mage instead of Black Mage. Usually Black Mages only get Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder anyway, so it's not a bad idea to give the healer job the ability to contribute to the damage as well when they have spare MP.

It should also be noted that in XI, resurrection magic (especially Reraise) was exclusive to them and they brought back and expanded upon FF1's defensive spells, with the prefix "bar" - they generally granted resistance to various status ailments and elements. Love 11, by far the most comprehensive iteration of the Job system to date.
@timepassesbye
@timepassesbye 3 жыл бұрын
agree that XI does an amazing job of really showing what each job has to offer, but resurrection magic isn't exclusive to white mage. red mage, and scholar also have access to raise 1, summoner gets access to raise 2 and reraise 2 through caitsith as well as a reraise 3 type effect through caitsith's astral flow. scholar also gets raise 2 and 3 and reraise 2 and 3, but only white mage gets arise. white mage is also the only mage to gain access to cure 5 and 6 as well as fullcure later on. also white mages do have access to maces and hammers which wasn't noted in the video

23:15 - Dont forget, when using benediction you are essentially sacrificing yourself for the rest of the party. The enmity gained from using Benediction would dwarf any/all enmity gained by the other party members, which basically just means when a WHM would use benediction the mob would target them and not stop attacking them until the WHM was dead. Usually the WHM would use it when its a guarantee they cant kill the mob, and they would just try their hardest to stay alive while the rest of the party ran away to avoid dying. It just goes back to your original point of the white mage sacrificing themselves in previous games. Just thought it was interesting! :)

@timepassesbye
@timepassesbye 3 жыл бұрын
scholar does gain access to quite a few of those through their stratagems. that can make pretty much any enhancing spell aoe, haste excluded, their shell and protect are included and they are at just a slightly lower potency to white mages. paladin actually gets a stronger protect now, and gets access to aoe healing. scholar gets esuna as well as most of the NA spell line. but yes, i agree there wasn't the best representation of XI in this video, but it wasn't a bad start

@@balsamon69 I just really like how the FFXIV Job story for DRK subverts the “brooding, edgy” stereotype the Job has generally been associated with.
@JJMomoida
@JJMomoida 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAzureGuardian I don't think XIV's version of DRK necessarily subverts that. There's still that brooding and edgy quality to it, especially on Sidurgu's character. The story is just handled in a more tactful and introspective manner, so it's more like... it adds some depth to the "brooding" rather than outright change it.
@TheAzureGuardian
@TheAzureGuardian 3 жыл бұрын
@@JJMomoida True, Fray and Sidurgu are pretty much all about seeking the Darkness for more power. But your character is like “we can find another way” by rejecting what Fray is trying to get you to do and helps Sidurgu find another path to power; protecting others (name Rielle). Then the 60 to 70 quest line is about confronting their past (Sidurgu getting to see his mentor one last time) and then your character accepting that Fray is a part of them due to the DRK Soul Crystal originally being theirs.

I play FFD20 a TTRPG and I am currently playing a white mage Lamia named Ellanya, she’s the only healer in the group and everyone loves her. For all the dps fighters she is the heaviest hitter though her vows prevent her from killing and living creature( makes for interesting roll play) she a typical healer very kind and compassionate even towards enemies with a thick accent for aesthetic. Definitely my most favorite character I’ve played

Currently playing a game that doesn’t have a job system, but I have it setup so I basically have two tanks, a white healing mage, a black damage mage, and two supports. Aerith is my favorite white mage of all the FF games I have played.

I like that mobile games were included in this video but I'm surprised (and a little bit disappointed) Fina was not mentioned as she is basically the white mage representative for Brave Exvius AND a main character. Also Ayaka is from Brave Exvius, not War of the Visions.

Small quibble. In the FF11 section you say that low intelligence and high mind as a stat controlling white magic hasn't been seen since FF3. The names are different, but in FF4 Wisdom and Will are two different stats, Wis controlling black magic and Will controlling white.

Nice breakdown for most of it. You missed FF15. Lunafreya seemed to be based on a white mage archetype. For FF8 I always assumed Rinoa was based on a white mage as well, though more battle focused.

A little piece of trivia for White Mages in FFXIV, prior to the Stormblood expansion, white mages had an ability called cleric stance that would switch their mind stat with their intelligence stat so they could do more damage with their damaging spells. When Stormblood launched however, all spells that were casted by the healers would scale off of mind, regardless for what its purpose was.

As a XIV player, it’s fascinating to see how XI had it spells set up, like Benediction as a AOE or the Afflautus being like passives(?). Can’t wait to see more of these!

xi was unusual, it was a everquest 1 type game, so much less clicky. i played a monk, and could only use shoulder charge every few fights. now this was at the start and it likely made qol changes later, but at start it was very auto attack oriented, and wms could really not solo very much at all.

FF14's lore also describes the White Mage garb as being sacred vestments given to those who mastered white magic: the white symbolizing purity while the red traditional red trim represents the blood coursing through all living things.

I have to admit I very much like the Cat Eared Hood used by many White Magic classes, both White Mages, and improved/upgraded versions (Devout, Seer, etc.) possibly one of the best (or at least cutest) accessories in all of Final Fantasy. In fact I believe it does occasionally appear as a piece of Equipment in some of the games, often with effects that make it particularly good on White Mages (at least, for the time you get it.)
