Genuinely, I think that point about the anti-tilt factor of making funny faces with other people is something super overlooked in competitive games. Giving players the opportunity for completely non-gameplay-related self-expression and giving us a way to humanize our opponents turns it from a frustrating struggle against the enemy into a game to be played with other people who love doing the same thing. We need more things like this in all forms of competitive game.

This video is so cathartic. As someone who played Smash and got into traditional fighting games via Guilty Gear Strive, smash and other platform fighters are so behind in some areas. How has no platform fighter at least ATTEMPTED a super meter (besides smash meter that doesn’t count)

Well, because they're Brawlers. "Platform" and "Traditional" "Fighters" are new age terms, they used to just be Fighting Games and Brawlers before (This is not a dig at competitive Smash or me saying it doesn't require skill, please don't burn my house down). Brawlers are basically a deconstruction of the Fighting Game genre for the sake of creativity and experimentation. They'll remove or add as many things as they want and generally prefer a more casual feel for the sake of attracting bigger audiences. They CAN be used as a bridge over into Fighting Games, though Fighting Games are far off from being a "Party Game" and are almost entirely about intrinsic skill, whereas with Smash you can still pop on 4-16 players, random items and goofy stages and have a blast. Super Meters were never a thing mostly because Sakurai never viewed Smash as a Fighting Game and never went into it with that intent (Before anyone brings it up, yes, Sakurai DID call it a "Fighting Game".. as an apology after his own fans attacked him for referring to it as a "Party Game"). Sakurai is an old school arcade man and grew up doing what a lot of OG Fighting Game players did, which was hang out at arcades throwing quarters into machines for their turn at dethroning whoever was on a streak on Street Fighter or King of Fighters. Had he wanted to, he very easily could have made Smash more like Fighting Games, but he was invested in making a Brawler and Nintendo themselves did not want a polarizing game that would turn off half their audience, so Smash Bros it was. The Meter isn't there for a reason, but it could totally be implemented. Some games like Playstation Allstars did, though its means of implementation didn't sit right with a lot of people (Metered Supers were the only way to kill opponents and the games devs were woefully underrepresented and under budgeted).
@RushWheeler
@RushWheeler 11 ай бұрын
I've been thinking about making a platform fighter with a super meter mechanic, though. But it'll have to wait until I have the time and resources to make it.

As a traditional fighter, this video was really cathartic. Alot of Hardcore FGC say stupid things like "all you need to draw people in are cool moves!" or "Simplified controls doesnt bring anyone in" or even the REALLY stupid "I dont need single-player content; I just play online" but when SF6, the biggest Fighting game IP out there, decides to try these things, it actually starts bringing people in. SF6 has done so much right even for Traditional fighters, and its great to see that its bringing in people from Smash too cause they did things like...tried to teach people how to play in a single player mode instead of just saying a wall of text in tutorial mode is good enough. Also I concur with other people saying thats one of the best descriptions of fighter I've ever heard. And also Please put a recording feature in platform fighters. Holy crap. Even trying to play games from the 90's can be painful just cause you dont have it; it takes so much effort to find stuff otherwise.

It's difficult to make a recording feature for Smash since any balance change can change things drastically so the replay won't work in newer patches due to it being input based. The solution is to slap a giant (this replay is in version x) and make actual video records rather than input records but Nintendo Online sucks

Drive Impact is my favourite piece of game design ever; because the best (most satisfying) counter to Drive Impact is to Drive Impact BACK, meaning that new players naturally learn to hold on to it for the sicknasty counter animation and then start learning other mechanics of their own volition
@SSM24_
@SSM24_ 11 ай бұрын
It really is such a well-designed move. At a casual level it's just a big-ass move that's easy to input and ridiculously satisfying to land, but even at higher levels of play it retains importance as a reactable but high-reward option that affects decision making everywhere. They really nailed the design on it.

I guess? I just don't see it. If anything, "air combat" has existed in many fighting games for decades, Capcom already had "air combat" as early as 1994 when it released Children of the Atom, which was followed by X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel vs. Capcom. Anyways, glad to see people enjoying different games and not arguing about what constitutes a fighting game!

"Street Fighter 6 has a lot of respect for the time that you do decide to put in." THIS. With that one sentence, you perfectly summarized our entire experience with SF6, and by juxtaposition, Smash. SF6 makes it the entire point of the game to teach you how to git gud and gives all the tools you'll need to do so. Smash gives you barebones training room, online eldritch horror experiences, the same "How to Play" video from over a decade ago, and broken characters they have no intention on fine-tuning. One game cares about our experience and I thank SF6 for being it.

I might get killed by something and try to recall what happened but it’s just like “uhh I played bad and died”. But in sf6 I feel like it’s easy to understand EXACTLY what’s going on and what I should be doing better. Strive was the closest traditional fighting game to really sucking me in before SF6, it's really cool. If it had World Tour quality single player content it'd be perfect and might've really converted me, but sadly the campaign is a literal 4 hour movie haha. I'm sure it's great for series fans but I was 100% the Victorian child being shown a Marvel movie there. It wasn’t implemented nearly as thoughtfully, but without them I wouldn’t have gotten as into the game as I did. Amazing video, I'd seriously try mouse don't tempt me; my last street fighter game was alpha 3 and then smash 64 came out and then it was history; I never knew this was so developed, I'll give it a try, thank you for the great upload

For all the people who are getting into sf6, TRY BOTH, modern is nice but some people like classic more still, and try all the input methods you have (not gamecube controllers you dont have enough buttons) see whats nice to YOU, cuz thats what matters

You totally do have enough on a GameCube controller! The new “Simultaneous Input Assistance” Button allows you to use a GameCube controller perfectly fine!

SSBM has rollback netcode, ranked and unranked, and advanced training mode. You do have to play on Slippi and make an uncle punch iso from the tiny disc that you burned your 1.02 Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube iso from.

I HATE ONLINE IN SMASH. I hate how good SF6 players have it right now. Healthy competitive scene that's arguably getting bigger than Smash, way better online play, WAY better balancing (active Dev team), and so much more.

I honestly do think that World Of Light is a great tool for new players, having spirit battles gives interesting constraints, and giving yourself spirits gives you a chance to try out some aspect of a moveset that you missed before.

Ive never played a traditional fighting game in my life but when sf6 came out, one of my friends who had been playing the series for probably 15 years told me i should get it. It was honestly because of modern controls that i even gave the game a try... and i turned out to LOVE it. I dont have a ton of time to dedicate to the game and i think learning everything on classic controls wouldn't have been fun. So im very glad this modern control system is an option. It helps me to be competitive without giving me an advantage against the people who already know all the combos. It really levels the playing field in a way i don't think any game ever has before.
