There are many REALLY good older fighting games you can play for FREE on Fightcade! My favorites are Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Vampire Savior (aka Darkstalkers 3). Both are pretty easy to initially pick up but truly mastering them can take a lifetime. One of the largest benefits of one of these older games is the communities are usually VERY excited to have someone new pick up these games... they realize if new people don't pick them up then eventually they will die out. I've tried a ton of the newer games, but nothing has come close to the experience of the golden age of fighting games so I prefer them... also, unlike new titles where every few years you will have to buy a new game and relearn everything, and every few months now there is a new patch that changes the balance and meta, you don't have to worry about any of that so everything you practice and learn is always useful.

Two years ago, I watched this video on the heels of a decent FighterZ fascination that, due to the circumstances of my work life, I flexed a bit at the very casual level and didn't play for very long because I didn't have the time. Now I've come back to watch it again. I've been out of work for a while, after that very same job landed me in the hospital (more than once) and left me with almost a year of nerve damage, during which time I slowly descended into and slowly crawled back out of being bedridden. For a time, I couldn't turn on a light switch. I couldn't pick up a drink, lift a remote, couldn't even grab the edge of a blanket and drag it up over my legs with my right hand, not for many months. It's been a long road to recovery, and I'm still not at 100%, but heading into this Christmas season I've bought Tekken 7 on sale and started my first fighting game in quite some time. I haven't even played a match yet, not even against the AI, I've just spent many hours of a few days in training trying to relearn how controllers work. But goddamn, I won't lie; getting to where I could reliably and continuously land the Hunting Hawk combo almost made me cry. I just wanted to say, I appreciate this now more than ever, and once more this video has helped remind me of why I've come to love fighting games over my life, and keep coming back to them. I'm anxiously awaiting my first online match where I hop in against a California professional Yoshimitsu with 8k hours and a foundation of 300 ms lag easy, it's gonna be fun.

And on top of that, despite the fact that it has the potential to poor lots of salt because of the fatalities, I feel less frustrated with losing because it feels easier to pick up where i went wrong and how to fix it or understand the playstyles of certain characters and the kinds of people who play them. @@dj_koen1265 League being a team based game is a huge part of its appeal. Players will shift their faults and mistakes onto others to free themselves of feeling inadequate. Players create a lie in their head to protect their ego and tell themselves they are Pro and are being dragged down by the system and shit players. So they keep playing without working on themselves and essentially become addicted to gambling. Now most players don't want to work on themselves/fundamentals so a lot of them just fall into the gambling category. In fighting games you have to work on yourself and do "boring Drills, practice combos/matchups" just to PLAY the game. Players just want to turn off their brain and press buttons and have fun. Nothing wrong with that but fighting games just can't really provide that unless the roster/visuals really make the player invest in the game while at the same time create a environment where you fight players in the same level. That's why fighting games won't reach a wide audience. even the population of league that work on themselves competitively is a small percent. Most players playing ranked league are gambling every time they play.

The number one reason most people dont play fighting games is cause of online matches and cant accept losing a match and are even afraid to lose so they dont play online at all. ANd then there are those who try for the first time in their life and goes online and suddenly gets a ass whopping from hell so hard that they didnt know what hit them and decided the game is not for me ill go play a slow MMO. So yes everyone needs to accept losing and not shame yourself from losing. Everyone starts from losing especially fighting games.
@joshreynolds8695 жыл бұрын
@@unixjpn It's about setting expectations. The game needs to teach a player that you can't win on day one. They need to introduce players to the journey and set expectations. People get mad because they expect to be able to win. When they get blown up they either believe the game is broken or the opponent cheated in some way. The scrublord's prayer from Core A Gaming comes in handy here as you know what they will be thinking. When a game finally gets that right and teaches people that the fun in fighting games is the journey, that's when fighting games will explode and the game that does that will be massively popular.

What happened to me is that I gained an emotional attachment to a certain character, not because I liked the character but because of a certain memory associated with it. For example: this one time, I was at a sleepover at a friends house (I was in like 4th or 5th grade) and I was having a really bad week. They’re were 4 of us and we decided to play a little Brawl. I’d never played Brawl before because I was kind of the poor kid at my school who didn’t have enough money for a Wii so I was the biggest noob. I got my ass kicked like 20 times, always with a different character. At one point my friend’s mom came in to tell us that this was the last game because we had to go to sleep. I wasn’t in the mood to actually think out a character so I just pressed “random”, and got Pokemon Trainer. I was never really that into Pokemon and since I just picked the characters that looked cool to me I never picked him. When the game started I just started pressing random buttons, like not even playing much attention to the screen and before I knew it, I won. Nobody could believe it (least of all me) and I got bragging rights for the rest of the night. I still remember the screen showing Red petting Ivysaur with the word “WINNER” all in bright colors in the bottom. I never actually got good with Pokemon Trainer because I never played Brawl again but that guy will always have a special place in my heart.

One of the main reasons I love fighting games is that to me it is the highest expression of "skill" one can exercise in any video game genre period. In a fighting game it's you against another player and the better player wins. Period. There is no such thing as RNG, there is no such thing as camping, there is no such thing as abusing a glitch, a spot or getting a lucky stray kill, there is no such thing as relying on team mates or any single thing outside your own ability to play. It's a clash of pure mechanics and strategy with no bullshit in between. No matter who you play or what you do, the better player wins. And if someone is better than you, you will know it. Nothing comes free in fighting games. You practice, you learn and you adapt. And if you can keep doing that, the wins will come. Fighting games are one of the very few genres that give you the player absolute agency and absolute skill expression. It's pure 1:1 competition and it's beautiful.
@syrelian6 жыл бұрын
RNG... occasionally exists, either literally(SF2 Stun is hell), or in the slight chaos of physics interacting in corners occasionally As for Glitches, SF2 says hi again But any good modern FG has minimal bugs(or even integrates them into its identity, hi again SF2), and no RNG(or at least RNG that matters, hit sparks and dust can use RNG so you're not throwing the same thing out every time)

@magicmanscott40k5 жыл бұрын
@@toesnub9676 I just got mk11 and after playing online a lot, I would say it's block heavy. Learning a character's weakness makes a big difference in a match. I would say knowing how to punish is better than combos. Also in mk11, after u do 5 hits or so, ure damage becomes next to nothing with scaling. Big combos can do 40 percent usually but a couple good punishes does the same. Learning how to block and learning the match ups helps the most i think.
@cantfindawayout5 жыл бұрын
@@magicmanscott40k Mortal Kombat 11 is much more focused on footsies and punishes compared to Mortal Kombat 10 or 9 (which were both extremely combo/vortex/50/50s heavy). Mortal Kombat 11 limited the number of characters that have 50/50 combo starters to very few compared to most in MK 10 and 9 and made it that the characters that have actual 50/50 combo starters cannot get 40%+ combos off of those without a crushing blow or spending both bars. Before, in MK 10, you could get either a 40%+ combo from midscreen with 1 bar or a vortex/restand/50-50 with most top tier characters. This time around, characters that hit like a truck (Noob Saibot and Shao Khan being the two best examples) only have highs as their combo starters, but they can get 35%+ on 1 bar easily, while characters that have true 50/50s don't have access to easy 35%+ combos. I kinda like the balance. Also, Mortal Kombat 11 is the best game in terms of fighting games with tutorials. The tutorial for each character has useful frame data (and it's explained too, which is very nice), each special move and combo string is explained for each character, you have a complete tutorial on footsies, string gaps, 50/50s, restands and so much more. That's giant progress compared to, say, MK 9 which didn't even have frame data easily visible in the game or MK 10 which only had bare frame data and no tutorial for new players on what those numbers mean and how they can be utilized. 10/10 on that part of the game for the new MK, for sure.
@cantfindawayout5 жыл бұрын
@DeadMemes NeedToStayDead Well, I'd say there is an easier way to look at it. Most characters in MK 11 have a less-damaging combo starter (used to utilize tight frame advantage) and a more damaging combo starter (usually much slower, for whiff punishes and such where the whiffed hit is so minus frames on whiff that the startup frames for the punishing character don't really matter, they're still beating the recovery frames of the character who whiffed an attack) and (usually) 2 or 3 'main' combos. Those less-damaging combo starters usually start with something like a 7 or 8 frame attack. Learning how your combos interact with those 7 or 8 frame attacks is the only important frame data a beginner has to learn. Everything else will come naturally as the person continues to play the game I'd say.

@@whitesmith5985 My recommendations are going to training mode and try to hit the dummy the hardest you can, also checking at least how to do the special attacks (well, the video says the same thing). In one moment you will notice that you can do this move after that other move and will start to make combos. If you don't want to be bored in a match you can't lose the 1 player modes and battles against the CPU is where I practice the most of the time without getting bored. If you end up making a good combo, repeat it all the times you can so you can understand it better and do it more easily, to the point it's gonna come out almost automatically. And one of the most important tips is to attack with fast moves, or moves that you can use safely in a distance (a.k.a. long range). Because it doesn't matter if your attack makes a lot of damage if you get hit before you can land it.

I used to call combo heavy fighting games "guitar hero fighters" because there were to many button presses per combo! When you get better you don't think about what button you are pressing anymore, you "press the move", not the button. (if that makes sense)

Nice, its always good to see people enjoying tekken. Find a main? If this is your first tekken and ur trying to git gud and the game I'd suggest paul as a good beginner character, that is if you haven't found a main. His kit is just a very basic outline of tekken, and teaches very inportant concepts for offense, and defense because he doesn't have a lot of panic moves, so you have to learn defense.

@@vibercib2667 miguel's an offensive powerhouse if thats what you like. His savage stance pressure is honestly some of the scariest in the game. Play who you play and try to learn how to korean backdash (canceling a backdash with a crouch, and then backdashing again) since backdashes have an innate block because you're holding back, you move backwards really quickly while blocking, which makes a lot of people whiff, and miguel has very high damage. The input is b,b,db,b,b,db.... b means to press towards the back of your character, db means to press down and back at the same time. Really just enjoy the game and figure things out as you go.

@@vibercib2667 3 years now. I still don't know that much, just the core mechanics and some characters. One more thing thats a must-know; if you think a low is coming, press df (down and foward at the same time) and you do a low parry. Any small low will now get them thrown on their back for a combo. Example: law's junkyard kick is a mid, low, mid string. You parry the low which is safe on block and you get a full combo. They really should make a tutorial on this in-game, but they don't.

And learning your opponent extends to things that are otherwise "blind" 50/50s, like ol' 3S Chun Li, learning your opponent, either intellectually, or on an instinctive level, allows you to realize what they will do even when the standard info isn't there, maybe you pick up a pattern where they alternate how they exploit the 50/50, maybe they have a mental cue based on one or more vitals like meters or HP, its behavioral adaptation, and when you're dealing with chaff in low rank, or the same few guys in high rank, you start to notice patterns, either because everyone sucks in similar ways(low) or because its like 12 guys and they are doing their own unique thing, but being unique doesn't mean being unpredictable(high)

Not sure if you're even still playing FighterZ, but I recently got into it, and I'd say the hardest thing in that game is learning to just block and not try to force your way out of pressure all the time. Until the recent guard cancel changes that make it easier to escape pressure now, most of the cast had ways to just lock you down for at least 2 to 3 sets of block strings that of course have a mixup element to them. I think because defense is so daunting, the developers made basic offense relatively easy and universal for most characters until you start incorporating character specific tools (like Krillin bomb loops in the corner), so that is a relief that you can do the same basic low into jump cancel starter with about 90% of the cast and do decent damage.

Some games can be played to kill time regardless of player skill. Some other games need to be treated like a hobby which demands regular physical and mental devotion to be competent. Fighting games are definitely among if not leaning towards the latter.

I'm mostly a spectator with FGs, so I might not have much of a say (as this is mostly anecdotal and based on someone watching from the benches most of the time), but I'd definitely say that most FGs are entirely in the latter category if you're aiming to play at even an average level. It's one of the reasons why FGs aren't as mainstream as something like FPS or MOBAs or, more recently, BRs. There's a LOT to learn just to get into it, between your character of choice and their gimmicks/potential combos/punishes/frame data, and also the matchup of anywhere between 15 (something like For Honor) to 70+ (like Smash U) characters. And that's before factoring in stuff like tech, where you're delving not into just your character/your opponent's characters, but the engine of the game and how you can legally abuse it. It's because of this depth and trust in the player's intellect/ability that I love FGs and want to get into them, but also because of this that I struggle to fully invest my time with one (though I'm slowly trying to wrap my head around Smash U rn).
@astral60696 жыл бұрын
I think it's both. Fighting games can be really simple for everyone, press a button do a thing. While I mostly played FGs for fun or just to mess around with friends, it's still enjoyable without learning all of these skills, but just because of the depth you CAN go deep into the skills and learn these new things but you can still kick back and play with friends who don't know how to play by relaxing and not caring about your specifics
@ResponsibleToTheRealm6 жыл бұрын
Nah, this is wrong. you'll improve in a fighting game even if you play it at its most casual only ever so often. You'll just improve slower than people who play it all the time. You'll be killing time all the same.

I think the one piece of advice that I think got looked over, but more a for people that are already into a game but are trying to improve, is to identify your big weaknesses and figure out a way to eliminate them. Being humble enough to recognize where you're not doing the best is important to growing in any given game!

@@HennyVenny thanks! This really seemed from my history of friendly rivalry between myself and one of my closest friends. We're always competing against eachother at any game we both pick up, but its most prominent with Smash Bros. Theres always a cycle of one of us getting better than the other until we figure out what we're failing at and step it up. Because of this we both got good enough to play in legit tournaments, but it wasn't always like that. We both used to get mad at each other when we were losing until it just clicked one day that getting that way wasn't helping. From that point on we just kept helping eachother get better and better!

I think what turns most people off from fighting games (at least the people *I try to convince to play with me), and what this video sort of glosses over, is that practicing and becoming competent takes more time than they are willing to put in. too many people are used to “pick up and play” games, and when they are hit with a skill wall that they need to overcome right when they start playing, their fun stops at that wall and they give up, labeling the game as “too difficult”. I was kind of hoping to hear something that would help me convince my friends to try out fighting games, and i was really dissapointed to hear the same things ive been saying to them (“you just need to put in time practicing, like an instrument”/“there are a lot of helpful tutorials online you could use to get better”).

@Zinras6 жыл бұрын
@Mwarrior1991That's very true IMO, people who are into fighting games tend ignore just how many hours it takes before you get competent enough to actually have fun. Most video games are specifically and carefully designed to follow the "easy to learn, hard to master" school of thought, where the further interest comes from the fun you can achieve as a beginner and how it can increase as you gain mastery of maps/moves/weapons/whatever. It's fine and dandy to sit and say that hitting a button sequence isn't that hard but that's not really the problem a lot of people have with fighting games: The problem they have is that there are multiple hard stops to their progression along the way and the games themselves are often awful at explaining them. There are probably some very casual gamers out there that can nail a sick Guitar Hero track because failure there never stopped the fun and improvement made you look awesome at parties or with friends. In other words, it's not about combos or timing issues but the experience between point A and point B on the competence scale. Contrary to the belief of people who hang out on youtube and such, the absolute *vast* majority of players in any given game don't want to play any further after hitting a wall a few times. It's just that while most games have a youtube guide to show how to defeat or circumnavigate the challenge blocking your path, all a fighting game has to offer is "get good or your fun ends here". This is a sentiment I can appreciate from a competitive aspect but also one that absolutely prevents me and many others from getting into the fighting genre as I just don't have the kind of time necessary to commit to the non-fun activities before the fun ones begin. Do I want to spend 2-3 hours per day having fun or do I want to spend them not having fun? And do I want to pay for the non-fun experience? It sounds harsh but that's how the market works.

This Video… This is the video that got me to pick up Street Fighter. I remember back in 2020 (I think) I searched up a guide on how to play Chun-Li in SFV. I looked at the combos and thought to myself: “I can’t do that.” Back in the day I was trying to play Smash competitively. Fast-forward to early December 2021 and I happened to stumble upon this video. It was a bit of an eye-opener for me in terms of fighting games other than Smash. On Christmas Day I played SFV for the first time and I haven’t been able to put it down for more than 2 weeks. There were days where I’d wake up or go to bed excited for the next time I’d get to play it. Funnily enough SF6 was announced yesterday so I picked a good time to get into the series. I’m also looking to get into Tekken as well (if the definitive edition wasn’t so damn expensive) and considering dropping Smash competitively. This video is awesome. Hopefully more people will watch this.

First of all: work on your launcher. You must have a mean hook to put the adversary 15 feet up on the air... you must work it. Second of all: don't skip leg day on your workout, or you won't be able to jump at the height you're launching your opponent. Third: don't forget to see tutorials on how to do projectiles trough your hands, and practice. You can set, as your target, to light your oven with your meter, for example. Fourth: you must coordinate your launch and your jumping to connect the first hit in the combo, and keep going from that. Please, post a video showing the results of that. Now go hit the gym.
