Way overdue on my January wrap-up (uhhh it’s almost March??) but I had some STRONG feelings about the books I read, so I still wanted to share my thoughts.

So glad you enjoyed Iron Widow. I've heard mixed reviews about it but I do know a lot of people don't seem to like unlikable characters, I do though because I think it's so interesting to explore and I think they're perspective is needed, can't wait to read it! At least you had a winner for January. Sorry about the books you didn't like (for good reason) but I love listening to the ranting lol. Also I love the little summary graphic!

Sometimes I have to sit with "unlikeable" characters and ask myself why they're bugging me. And I had to do that with Zetian in Iron Widow. I realized a lot of what made her unlikeable (for me) was that she wasn't softening her approach or forgiving people who had wronged her and then when I thought about it that way I realized that was a wild expectation under her circumstances. I'm still unpacking that a bit to be honest because it says way more about me than it does that fictional character. I'm glad you like listening to the ranting though! It's satisfying to rant about something but I'm really glad it's enjoyable to listen to in some way. lol.

@@TheLitReviewForBooks I get that, it can be tough sometimes to analyze "unlikeable" characters but it's good to ask questions like that for yourself. I actually love that she's not forgiving, I feel like we need to explore the less forgiving aspects because as someone who has gone through extreme trauma... no everyone deserves forgiveness or leniency or honestly even mercy. I think those stories need to be explored more because sometimes.... I'm just so tired of forgiving in stories, it just makes everything more predictable. For me at least. Ranting can be really fun lol! I love listening to Jesse from Jesse on KZbin rant too. There's something almost therapeutic about it. I love listening to people gush about their favorite books too but there's also nothing like a good rant lol! Honestly I think a lot of it is the passion for the ranting

So, so agreed with everything you had to say regarding Iron Widow- the book made me happy, made me rage, made me almost cry, just all of the feels. And oh my word… if Xiran ever does an adult book, if they ever want to go their, I would be *so* happy and would read it so fast! I so want to see what they do without the constraints of YA (on the other hand, I still want to read their middle grade too… but that’s for a very different mood) on them as a writer.

I will insta-buy any of their other YA work but I'm with you on wanting an adult title! I think I would try the middle grade just because I loved their work so much, but middle grade isn't one I reach for often.
