I totally understand what you’re saying about the English adaptation. My fam is indigenous American and everything in American TV growing up had natives be the bad guy or sidekick, while the cowboys saved the day. Then dances with wolves came out and I was like dude that’s still not us. So Mulan was to you what Pocahontas was for us. So I hope Netflix won’t muck up such a good book. And I do hope the right peeps are represented. All accolades to the writer Cixin Liu I’m about to hit Ball Lightning as I am so impressed by his work.

The last episodes were clownishly edited IMO. The American general (with his Australian accent!!) talking about some random psychopathic mercenary right before the nanomaterial slicing scene was especially bad and served no purpose, other than the screenwriter(s) having a sudden panic that the slicings wouldn't go over well unless the people on the ship were suddenly recast as "serial murderers, pirates and terrorists." Gee, OK, thanks general. And I actually laughed out loud as the whole vibe abruptly turned into a 90s action movie MTV supercut as the military got into position. Insanely amateurish. Watch episode 29 from 7:47 to 14:30 and tell me I'm wrong.

Didn't got to follow the show due to some emergency coding/data tasks. Binged all 10 episodes last night, I'm super pleased. The Great Rip was VERY well presented. As long as I enjoyed the game scenes, I still didn't felt the amazing solemn and defiance of the trisolarian civilizations, until the Great Rip scene did it. It made me feel such empathy for the Trisolarians, which I should at that joint. "90 million years later, civilization emerge again", Goosebumps, just like when I read the book. I was really amazed when I found out my parents following this show during my Spring Festival visit back home. Yesterday I texted them about the keyboard and mouse I bought them, and they send back "虫子从来都没有被战胜过!". That was priceless🤣

I agree with the point you made in the last of your video. We have to have our own version of the three body drama, so people have the chance to see the authentic chinese point of view, thus our voice could be heard. So, do reviews, I came aross the live-stream of Quinn's idea on the review of the 1-4 episode of Three body, one thing he said that really irritates me, that he is not sure the chinese version of the three body have the cultural revolution part written or not, what he has heard was that the part was greatly removed in the Chinese version. That for me, or maybe I just overthink, is that he sort of imply somehow the English version is more legit than the Chinese one. I liked his review on the all serie of the three body, but this kind of comments just reminded me again the hubris of the American typical mentality, and how important the Chinese reivew can be heard by western people is to us. It is glad to see a Chinese who understands the cultural and so fluently does she able to express herself in English doing review for this master piece. So, now we have not only the drama made by Chinese but also the splendid review done by an elegent chinese lady that can be seem to the world,

I agree with everything you said. I was so impressed with how it turned out, and how beautiful the entire drama was, so well-thought out in every detail. Casting, cinematography, direction, writing, special effects, everything was such high level. To have basically no tradition in China for this genre, and not a very big budget to work with, and then coming out with THIS as the first hard scifi drama, it's beyond impressive! And during episode 29 I was literally on the edge of my seat, and gasping when they showed the Guzheng in action, it was so well made and so scary! And even though they couldn't show too much gore, what they did show was just super effective. It gave me chills. That episode felt like it was two hours long, they packed so much into it and it was so intense.

A screenplay being faithful to its literary source material is not necessarily a good thing. Look at 2001, the Shining, Silence of the Lambs, No Country for Old Men, The Godfather, The Exorcist... they all veered off from the novels.

@@Case_ "Actually" the novel was written in parallel to the screenplay. Otherwise it would be difficult to understand why the goal of the mission is Saturn in the novel and Jupiter in the film, and why in the sequels Clarke reverted to the version of the film (again Jupiter). All this is explained at length in a book of Clarke's (Probably The Worlds of 2001, but I don't remember for sure) in which he says the screenplay should be signed by Kubrick/Clarke and the novel by Clarke/Kubrick, since both influenced considerably both final versions.

I'm halfway through the series and I love it so much. So faithful to the source material. I'm happy to hear that Tencent is already filming Dark Forest. I'm really curious what Netflix will do with it, although I know already that they'll fuck it up big time. So you have a very good argument that Tencent had to make a chinese version so the original voice can be heard. I really hope Tencent will do Death's End. It is my favorite book of all time, because I've never read such mindblowing shit in my life. It touches my sci-fi nerves at the right spots.

Fascinating, in-depth review. Once I completed this series, my overarching thought was about the horrific damage the Cultural Revolution did to Ye Wenjie, and THAT is the genesis of the entire story. It warped her opinion of humanity so profoundly that she felt it was not redeemable ... thus she responded back to the message, bringing on the eventual invasion of the aliens. Later, when she and her baby were so loveingly cared for by the people in the village, she would have not made the same decision. It was then that she experienced the warmth of human love and empathy ... this broadened her understanding of human beings. Sadly, by then the damage had been done, and could not be undone. Ye Wenjie is inciteful enough to understand she is the prime mover in what is coming humanity's way. But it all stems from her experiences during the Cultural Revolution. My second thought was I wish the well-translated version I viewed on Viki were made more readily available to the entire world. Although I do look forward to the Netflix version, I believe this version so grounded in Chinese history and culture is the more profound interpretation, and more faithful to the author's intent.

I just finished the series and I LOVED it. I totally agree with everything you said. Excellent drama with just a few issues. I will say that the foreign actors did take me out of it slightly. I had the same issue with Wandering Earth 2's foreign actors. They just weren't as good as the Chinese cast. Hopefully future productions can find better actors. 😅 Three Body has me so excited for the future of Chinese sci-fi television and cinema in general and I'm also so glad we got a Chinese adaptation of the book before Netflix releases it's version which I just know is going to manage to be stereotypical, sinophobic, and anti-communist. The west loves a chance to exploit Chinese history so that they can place themselves on a pedestal.

I really enjoyed your review of this fantastic series. What really impresses me about this series is the way it is written allows for the viewer to understand fully why the characters psychologically reach their viewpoint and the resultant actions they take. I am very worried that the Netflix version will not be able to capture the cultural revelence as to why people have a careful, somewhat stoic, thought process to their actions. I enjoy chinese dramas more for the melding of Confuscious/duoist/buddhist philosophy subtly blended into the psychology of the language. With 3 Body there is 'must remember' phrase in every paragraph. Brilliant.

Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough vlog on THREE-BODY! Well made! I am so glad that I found the Tencent drama series with English subtitles and I totally support your stance on the importance of the Chinese movie adaptation. What already fascinated me as a foreigner in the description of the Chinese cultural landscapes of then and now in the book was brought to the screen truly believable. At best a Netflix version may be “not bad”. So now I will reread the book with the images of the main characters to play in my head and I do hope we’ll get a movie adaptation of THE DARK FOREST that can fulfill its role as good as this one.

What a fabulous narrative analyzing the Tencent version of Three Body. I rarely watch long videos on KZbin, but I was riveted every word you spoke. Thank you for that. I will have to go back and find your original early Impressions video of the show. I'm curious if you mentioned the very strange and out of context music that would suddenly pop up over dialogue and scenes. Short of that weird bit, the series was quite excellent. I have read the book Last Summer and was eager to see a screen adaptation. This one does the job many times over. Simply love it. Thank you again.

I used to enjoy Star Trek TNG though not an avid Sci Fi fan, in a way it is more fantasy in my eyes. The 3Body drama gave me a more realistic but also futuristic vibe. I appreciate all the excellent work from the whole team like you have mentioned. The book 3Body was heavily influenced by the wave of Scar Literature in Chinese literature history, so Cultural Revolution is a natural and important background setting. I agree the 2nd book is way more dark and thought provoking. I still worry about the screen adaption of The Dark Forest, the emotional shaking will be hard to rechannel if not done "right". Fingers crossed and definitely looking forward to it.

Concerning the attractive of the IP to Europeans (I can only speak for myself of course) is that in the book China is represented as a country both confronting its identity as a contemporary society with a tragic past (a sincere, non-political acknowledgement) and standing together with all the world in an ecumenic way (I love how in the future the language is a 50%-50% mix of English and Mandarin). I think it also deeply resonates with the Chinese youth, since all the Chinese exchange students in my college days had this hunger in their eyes when talking world history, and went out of their way to learn and understand things that were very alien to them. It too reminds me of the May 4th Movement at the start of the XX century, the Internationalist spirit that is also very present in Wandering Earth.

I am so happy this show turned out to be as good as it is, from the trailers I saw last year it honestly didn't look good at all so I suppose we can chalk that up to the trailer people not being very good. Now when the Netflix adaptation comes out, we can point and laugh at how bad that dumpster fire is going to be, I have 0 faith in those game of throne guys to adapt such a nuanced story told from a very different point of view than the usual American hollywood point of view. That said, I hope the author is getting paiiiiiid super well for it lol that would be the best thing about it because Liu Cixing really deserves it.

Mastered on every level!!!. A universe more than a series. I felt like a scientist while watching it 😁 because of all those scientific discussions among humans and trisolarians themselves that many times got related to existential questions. The idea of stealth introduction of that unlucky earth through a game and how humans perceive it and how trisolarians perceive it, is super creative. The computer representation in episode 15, I think, is epic; the slicing of the ship is even more epic and done with no disgusting gore; not to mention trisolarians' discussion of how they manipulated dimensions to deploy the protons wow mind bending. Hope season 2 and 3 would be just as solid. And Avenuex thank you for such insightful reviews of Chinese drama. Your scaling is reflective of the actual artistic weight of the dramas. Chapeau bas!

Wow!! Such a detailed dissection of the drama. I would like to emphasize on another thing. The music and songs are brilliant. What I mean is, in many c-dramas, english songs are used often. In many cases the they seem like they were first composed in chinese, then the lyrics are translated to english and put into the main song. It seems forced sometimes. This drama is different. In here, whether its english or chinese version, each song has gone through hardwork. It feels original. There is one thing that I do not understand. I haven't read the books. So I don't know whether it happens in the book or not and even if it happens, its confusing. Facts- First, Evans is a ornithologist and has hatred for humankind. Second, he wanted the ETs to come and kill all humans. Understandable. But on the Judgment day ship, he engaged criminals as crew. Why on earth the criminals would agree to join a mission where they might get destroyed by another civilization? Is it only to justify the slicing of the ship where criminals are killed and not innocents. Also, from episode 1 to 30, ants had been heavily emphasized all through the drama. Is it only symbolic? or does it refers to something else?

Yes, it’s justification for the drama (probably to pass censorship). In the book, innocent lives, including our own spies were killed to ensure the success of the plan and that fact destroyed Wang Miao. The book is a more realistic and gruesome depiction, but the entire episode is still on of my favorites. So well executed.

I took a bit longer to watch the series, but was profoundly appreciative of this brilliant high quality ground breaking adaptation. I also greatly admired your knowledgeable analysis, so thanks very much for this. I'm glad that as you discuss, a Chinese production got first dibs on interpreting its own history and literature, and fearful of the Netflix take on this, much as I love many of their series. Their trailer was quite troubling, including the woeful depiction of the Sophons as fantasy Chinese warriors. Mind you, every society (as an Australian I certainly include my own) does have a tendency to revise their own history in accord with its current thinking.

I actually have the opposite thought that the Netflix series may be able to do the Culural Revolution portion better… I loved the series, but I do feel that those events were soft peddled vs the book (perhaps due to political and cultural sensitivities in the country of production) … and it was on the shoulders of the actress’ amazing performance to carry why Ye Wenjie would be as alienated. For example, they made it very abstract, and not clear how her father was killed during a struggle session (based on an insane ideological reading of basic science) and was denounced by the mother, the red guard schoolgirls or how the seemingly kindly interrogator dumped freezing water on her when she wouldn’t cooperate, etc. - so those early scenes lacked visceral pain. I did notice in the preview that they seemed to actually show the father’s struggle session seen in the Netflix production . Although I too overall share a worry of an overall Disney Mulan-ification of China in the series

Seeing many westerners complain about the English used in this drama and also in Wandering Earth, I have to point out that in Western films we have to put up with actors supposedly speaking Mandarin when in reality they are speaking really bad Cantonese and vice versa. They can't even get the dialect right. Most of the time you can't even figure out what they are saying- this even applies to some actors/actresses with Chinese heritage. The English in this drama and Wandering Earth is excellent in comparison!

GI have seen so many bad gringy western adaptations of for example Russian classics that I really was afraid the “Hollywood” is coming and robbing and molesting this authentic thing. Special thanks to you for explaining the book and drama differences and why and how it can/must be done. Enjoying that very much.

Hard sci-fi is also quite rare in the U.S., where most science fiction movies/series are, in fact, science fantasy, such as Star Wars and Star Trek.

I actually LOVED the inaccurate ethnic representation in this series. Every time the North American general spoke he sounded like if the Crocodile Hunter worked for NATO. The European general was just an American gay man. And the South American general was like Middle Eastern or something. Very very funny. It made me think how dumb it is that we spend so much time tailoring our cultural portrayals to be so accurate and sensitive, when maybe we should just be throwing all our stereotypes in a blender and enjoying a delicious multicultural smoothie like Three-Body.

I haven't read the book so I didn't really know the story, only that it's something to do with an alien invasion that is hundreds of years away, But anyway as someone who doesn't like reading very much being able to watch an adaptation that's so well made faithful yet it also improves on so many things has been amazing and it feels as if I read the book despite never touching it and I enjoyed it so much Feels like one of those adaptations where after watching it I actually don't need to read it because I didn't miss anything and in contrary they actually added meaningful stuff to the story I also didn't feel it was that long because well I am a Cdrama watcher and also since I didn't know important plot points I wasn't rushing to get to any part of the story that I would have been looking forward to

Just recently stumbled across the YT upload of this drama adaptation of one of my all time favourite shify novel. Enough to say i binged through 30 ep in less than 4 days. Overall amazing work, high production, very charming well casted actors, the script mostly respect the original material while going deeper with character development. One of the Best drama ever shown. Please someone tells me they are making serie2 and 3 !!! after reading the books, i had high hope in the netflix adaptation. i watched that serie in disbelief... i was prepare to some changes to adapt to western audience but the result was terribly disappointing, just saving some "game session".

Although there’s still ten months to go, I’ve already considered this the best C-drama for 2023. About the visualization of Operation Gujeng, the way it was filmed seemed to be inspired by the Gujeng Assassins in Stephen Chow’s Kung-Fu hustle, in particular the scene where a kung-fu master was disposed off by the Gujeng assassins. The other awesome scene in the drama is the human computer scene; though it’s rendered in animation, it’s still a sight to behold of.

@@替天行道-z2b it’s popular but it’s not as good as Three Body. There’s problem with the script, the characterization of some of the characters, mainly the good guy, and the ending. Some of the way the bad guys are caught just plain laughable.

The Trilogy become such a effect that a lot of Characters in the books may serve as "Tool Persons" as you said which I agree, but themselves have very good possibilities to be expanded into well-profiled characters stories, for that POV, you should watch the character story called "章北海传", although it's a cartoon series in Bilibili, but the story of Zhang Beihai is well finished.

I've seen that some western viewers review the trilogy as characters are NOT well built. I don't blame them, without knowing and understanding the history of that period of time, they wouldn't understand why Ye Wenji become the leader of ETO. The trilogy is such a success because it raised many questions, even without the culture background, some questions are still shared by all mankind.

I agree with your rating with the drama's production quality and acting of the actors. But this drama is not my taste. I keep drowsy and sleepy while watching the gaming part and some music makes me scared and my mind don't feel well while watching since most of the scenes are in the dark. I know this should be like that for that type of drama. But it's just me i don't feel well watching such kind of lighting. That's why i rarely watch crime dramas and sci-fi dramas.

I have a "little bit sad" about Mu Xing's dead. Because we just see the improvement of the relationship between her and Da Shi and i think it's very cute. They care about each other for real. Not in a love interest way. But like a brothers in arms in the same war just like Wang Miao. It's feels so suddenly when she been killed. She's not like a character who should be dead in the story like this.

First of all, thank you for spending the time to film and edit this! You're absolutely right that it was worth it 👍👍👍 Before I say anything else, I need to be honest: no matter how bad the Chinese version of TB was, I'm sure it would manage to at least be marginally better than the western version. And I'm not implying that westerners cannot make good stories, be it on paper or on screen. But westerners cannot make a good "Chinese story". Chinese culture is so DENSE, there is a history (of people, of arts, of politics, of multiple religions) that someone with zero previous contact cannot grasp. I'm a westerner myself and even with all my willingness and effort to be open towards this cultural wealth, I simply have a very long way to go. Now, put two very mediocre in terms of talent guys, with zero sensitivity to most things, and combine that with the average western person's lack of understanding about Chinese culture, and you have a disaster. Add the standard racism and the more recent "political enmity" into the mix, and you simply cannot expect anything other than a circus. They may manage to create a cool sci-fi show if they have serious help in scriptwriting and a big budget. But it won't be a good TTBP adaptation, I'm sure about that. For my part, I have already started ~brainwashing my friends to watch this and hopefully some of them will take the bait. It's better to hook them on the real stuff before Netflix drops whatever junk they're cooking. Luckily it's available on KZbin, so they won't have to look far. I will say, this whole unidentified flying objects situation has apparently raised interest in aliens (😅😅😅) so people can be more open minded when they hear what the story is about.

Overall I felt it was an amazing adaptation but JFC it could have been way shorter. They really drew out certain scenes and at times they added in some filler episodes, all so they could reach 30 episodes. I hope for Dark Forest they don't repeat the same mistake, just tell the story and let it take up however many episodes the story takes. Don't force it. I remember on one of your earlier episodes you had said how shockingly cheap it was to produce this show (and it didn't *look* cheap, not at all). Dark Forest is going to be way more expensive, especially the droplet scenes. I hope they have the budget to do those scenes justice.
