havent seen it mentioned so maybe its doublepost. the root note is a f, cause its the basskey you have the violin key on c and the basskey on f. so this is a basssynth so its root note is f :)

In a land of C to C two-octave keyboards, E to E was a practical choice for the Monologue for playing with a band live or in studio. In standard guitar/bass tuning, the lowest note is an E, so even with the 2 octave limitation, the Monologue is very practical in a band setting or for anybody more familiar with guitar/bass than keys

I absolutely love my Monologue. Not only do I enjoy the sounds it makes and its workflow but experimenting with it was seminal in my learning electronic music. I have found it useful as a bass/rhythm machine, playing leads over another synth, and a fantastic tool for experimentation. Whether playing live or recording, this little synth has never let me down. That said, I recognize it won't be for everyone. Some people will want different features and that is okay.

I had a similar experience with the Novation Bass Station 2 recently. I got it long ago but shelved it because of a lack of sequencing options. But these days I've gotten my amount of simultaneous channels enough that I've pulled it back out, and it quickly became a go-to for me because of its feedback loop options. I think that whole era of monosynths will be regarded well for decades to come.

One advantage is also it does instant patch changes. Not all synths do that. When for example sequenced with a Digitakt, you can parameter lock patch changes to every note which can result in some funky bass lines. But I've replaced the Monologue with the more compact Dreadbox Typhon. I didn't use the keyboard after all.

The star of the monologue is the sequencer. You said it doesn't have much modulation but the sequencer can be a 4 sample and holds or 4 LFOs or just 4 per-step sequence values for any knob on the thing. Not to mention the LFO can be used as a one shot envelope. and the Envelope can be used in a cycle like a LFO. I feel like I am getting defensive, I think I like my Monologue more than I realized. I'm primarily a drummer and bassist playing mostly rock and blues. I wanted to add an analog synth to my studio keys (ES110 and VR-09) and the monologue was a perfect fit. The E to E was great for my bass playing brain. I can easily reproduce some classic sounds that fit rock perfectly. In my limited time with the Uno I had a hard time producing anything that didn't sound like EDM but that's down to me not the synth. Thanks for taking the time to review the Monologue. Well done!

I love my monologue. I always like to point out that, while other synths in the same price range may be more feature rich, the monologues strength is in it's sound. It has a deliberately chosen set of features and components that give it a unique and beautiful palette. You won't be able to get sub-par creamy moog bass lines out of it and it may not have a noisy delay circuit slapped on as an after thought, but it does have a fantastic brassy quality to it's timbre that nuzzles comfortably into the overlap of an sh-101 and a DSI Mopho. Running it through some quality eq and compression really allows this synths strengths the opportunity to shine and highlights how much thought went into engineering the tone of this synth when compared to some of it's more budget-minded, jack-of-all-trades competition.

In its price range I recommend the Behringer Model D. You can’t rival that on bass or lead. The Minilogue XD is like a super charged Monologue but a bit more money. Well worth it even just for the added oscillator options like from Sinevibes. As you can see I love the Korg logic line, but for these reasons tough to recommend the Mono.
@LowFlatRate
@LowFlatRate Жыл бұрын
@Sibby Eskie The minilogueXD is not like a super charged monologue. It's a polyphonic digital-analog hybrid and calibrated with a completely different focus. It's also 200% the price of a monologue so I'd hardly say they're competitors. As for the behringer clone, it's true that if you want a moog-style sound the Boog is going to get you much closer, but the monologue has it's own sound. You won't get the airy, overdriven sh-101 style leads out of your Model-B. You can't get the mutating, wave-folded percussive lines out of an MS-1. The monologue can snarl and squeal or it can lift you into metallic, shimmering clouds. There isn't one synth to rule them all, every synth has it's own strengths, weaknesses, and use cases. My point was that the monologue has a unique set of offerings. It knows what it is and wears that identity with pride.

@sibbyeskie

@@LowFlatRate If you don't use the extra oscillator on XD, and set switch to mono, it's pretty much just as mono-analogue as the Monologue. The Monologue also has digital components, of course, so neither are pure in this regard. Not sure about the envelopes but the architecture is very close to the same, which is what you expect when designing a line of synths with the same overall parameters. Again, it's the drive that mainly separates the two. But the extras on the XD are incredible, in my estimation. Sinevibes is putting out a new OSC that has analogue modeling that rivals the best modeled soft synths, and that's on top of all of the wild FM stuff that is already out there. It's hard for me to recommend the Mono over the XD unless you want the same basic sound as those two OSC's but at a lower price. We disagree and that's fine.

The E to E keybed is for guitarist and bassists not joking. Bass and guitar have low E string in standard tuning. I use mine for 303, some simple leads but not much else. The sequencer is fun but the VCO sometimes lacks fatness to my ears and without fx it is quite dry. Did you try the minigame on boot? Different from Mini or Mini XD.

Bo, that was a question that I’ve made to my self the other day. I was wandering if it’s good for bass in techno and house music

I’ve not used mine much as I don’t have a room for equipment at the moment, but there’s something about the rawness that is so appealing. I remember getting the BassStation when it first came out in the 90s, and loved it to death, might have to get the BS2 now or a minilogue to complement the Monologue

The good thing about the Monologue is the compact size. If you don't have space to play with that little thing, not sure why you're considering to get a bigger synth, unless you plan on making more room...

I was literally performing a knobs off, isopropyl spring clean and polish of my monologue an hour ago. Haven’t watched yet. I pre ordered mine in full the day it was announced Richard D collaborated on its features. To this day, still my favourite mono for so many reasons. Bought a few since too. It just tops them all in sheer versatility. It’s Far more versatile than it’s given credit for. In fact, it’s Far more inspired and forward thinking in its signal path design and execution than its given credit for too. Might be a little biased here, but, IMO, it’s in the shortlist of pioneering modern masterpieces that’ll become future vintage classics up there with the 303, 808 and mini moog. Ok. About to watch. Making a coffee to enjoy with it. Don’t let me down now Bo…

It's odd how some synths just don't record as well as others despite eq ing. I've got an old Moog Rogue, with many age related quirks, and it always records beautifully. Yet others I have just don't.

Thanks for the video Bo. I purchased a monologue last year and have really enjoyed it. The main thing I feel it lacks are some nice effects, especially delay and reverb. I run mine through an electribe 2 and use the insert and master effects from that. I have also made use of the Distrokid link to get an ep out. Going well so far. Thanks for the work on the channel, really helpful content 👍

One drawback with the Monologue is that it does not change presets at the end of the sequencer-loop, like a groovebox. This causes problems in a live set, if changing Songs, when using the sequencer in a preset. Preset stays in tempo, but loses the position in time.

It's as I remember the initial reviews made me feel. I would have loved it at 18 or 20 or so because it is so HARD most of the time. But I generally don't use those kinds of sounds these days. I definitely would enjoy having access to this in my studio, but I can't imagine it being a "go-to" synth. It would be more something to play with once in a while & get some gnarly character sounds out of it. Great review.

One of the first synths I bought and one of the first I sold... but hearing it again made me kind of miss it. It certainly has a 'sound' but not that much diversity. I think it's been pretty much out paced by newer additions in the market since it's release.

I find it odd how many reviews claim it's odd that the keyboard doesn't start on C when lots of keyboards doesn't start with C as a piano starts on A. As for why E, tons of instruments has that as its lowest note from the bass & guitar listed in the manual to Bb brass instruments (tuba, trombone, trumpet, etc), so, being a brass player, I'm used to having notes below my fundamental pitch and often find it annoying using synths that start on C cause then I have to drop the octave down to get low notes yet then have to jump up an octave again to play a normal melodic range.

A tip for those with the XD, the only real positive difference on the Monologue is the drive knob rather than 3-stage Many don’t realize the OSC mixer actually drives the signal with gentle preamp. Select a single OSC saw and watch the scope how it rounds out into sine territory (IE: bassier) at higher gain. So you can achieve effectively more steps in the drive by gain staging the OSC’s. The drive is harsh while the OSC gain is gentle, and so you can hit real sweet spots particularly with basses when paying careful attention to your gain structure.

Does this have the same filter as the XD? Trying to decide if it’s worth picking up if I already have the XD.
@sibbyeskie
@sibbyeskie Жыл бұрын
@@en3970 Yes but it's overstating the differences in practice in my opinion. Most of the essential difference comes from the drive prior to the filter than the filter characteristics itself, which is based on the same 2-pole design. If you play the XD in mono mode and legato and gain your signal right you get effectively the same type of results. It is nice to have that drive knob though.

I suspect the keyboard is laid out like that because E0 is about the lowest note a person can 'hear' at a smidge over 20hz... Being (apparently) a colab with Richard D James, that's the sort of thing I suspect he'd think about.

Also, rather conveniently, an octave up at E1 is approx 41hz, the lower end of what your average hifi speakers will put out.

Behringer has a boat load of monosynths. The closest might be the Neutron, which is also paraphonic. The fit and finish on Korg products is generally better. The Dreadbox Typhon also seems like a direct competitor (modulo the keybed). Also see the Moog Minitaur. Too many choices!
