You are doing us all a service by stress-testing these motors. It is so much better than waiting years for failures to start happening under normal use. I just installed a DM01 on my bike and hope for many years of use under normal load.

I did the same with the DM01 and it is still going. I will have to try that one out again as well to see if the firmware has improved like with the DM02

It might have the same issues that Tongshen had. Just today had a TSDZ2 breakdown after the exact same ~500km. Stock controller & 58V so 1,2kW max.

Great video as always! What motor would you recommend for single track increment climbs. Torque sensor sounds the right direction but wanting to see your recommendation on reliability also . Thank you so much keep up the hard work!
@HighVoltageKits19 күн бұрын
For price and noise the DM02 or DM01 would work. Depends on your frame. There is also CYC and Bafang. No torque sensor on the Bafang though.

Ive been using my bike without the motor all summer now winter has arrived time to update all the firmware. This neatly gets me on to a request. I have installed the last 2 updates without issue prior, however I'm really struggling to install the download for the display, I get to the page with the Chinese writting and can't get passed the second page after hitting the grey button on the top left, not sure what I'm missing, any help would be gratefully received. Is the failure of an inexpensive sacrificial weak link, that is easily replaceable, really a 'failure'? I'd call that sound engineering. I would say it protected the rest of drivetrain, and possibly, electronics.
@HighVoltageKits23 күн бұрын
When you phrase it that way not really. It did do its job of preventing damage to the rest of the motor. Good point. In terms of squeezing out some extra power a PEEK would be awesome.
@polunu22 күн бұрын
That was certainly a respectable trial run, I would feel confident putting one on my own setup, and speaking of.. is that donor bike a good foundation for this? I'm hoping to find one that's got good geometry for someone 6'1" with wider(2.1-2.5") tires and big cogs for climbing, if you know something like that already? If not, no worries. I still see *only* the cottonmouth frame at northbay, tho 🙂
@HighVoltageKits13 күн бұрын
I would look at Surley and Salsa for something bigger. This is a salsa but the max tire at the back is 2 inches. Its a touring frame really. In terms of cogs it does fine with the motor on but if you are doing really really steep stuff then a wider range cassette will be needed I think.

Thanks for the extreme testing. Is shredding the 'sacrificial' blue gear really breaking the motor? As you say, it's an easy fix and intended to be so. I was expecting shredded main gear or shattered torque sensor or the like by the headline. I'm highly unlikely to push the motor to a 1000w until I add effective heat dissapation to the controller and buy a bigger battery - let alone 3000w, so happy with the motor as is and in this incarnation. Looking forward to your 'stock' testing. Have you installed it straight of the box or have you added grease to the main gear?
@HighVoltageKits23 күн бұрын
Cheers Ian. Its not really broken lol. A simple fix albeit consumption of time. I think it can handle up to 1000 watts no problem and for time especially with a peak gear. I will keep you posted on the stock motor. I just need to run the update and I will give it a test ride.

cnc metal ⚙️ gears ⚙️, maybe that is better/It that i see it plastic?
@HighVoltageKits23 күн бұрын
The metal gear option is possible. It does make the motors much louder though which is not always popular. PEEK would be the best material. We use PEEK with the BBSHD alot to give it some more strength.

There's a lot of skepticism about the the quality of Toseven motors online. I think you've been fair in your analysis of both motors, which is really benefy. Could you comment on the clearance between the bottom bracket shaft and the motor housing? I'm wondering would this be large enough to mount to a bike with an eccentric bottom bracket. If anyone knows if this would fit a Pelago Hanko, then I'd appreciate a reply. Thanks.
@ianbourne408423 күн бұрын
I have an Eccentric BB and the DM02 will fit fine IF i swing the bottom bracket hole to the bottom BUT the clamping bolt arrangement fouls the whole thing SO I will also need to grind those off and then shove a few tech screws through the EBB housing and into the EBB so it doesn't move around... I've decided to move my Alfine IGH onto another frame. On quality, I've had my fair share of stops and starts with my DM02 (s) but it's clocked over 2500kms, and climbed into outer space and is running better now than when I bought it. To be sure I knew I was buying in early and offered to be a 'test bunny' but I wasn't expecting my DIY motor to be SO DIY for the 1st year.

I will try and add that into the video with the DM02 running stock. Cheers

@@ianbourne4084 thanks..That's an approach I hadn't thought of. Re the Pelago Hanko it's the bolt mounts that I think will be the problem.

Are you referring to the dmo2 breaking or cyc. Why I ask is I just sent John N/O back a failed photon with 305 miles on it. No throttling. If I can get the range up on the toseven even close to cyc I will install them in lieu of the cyc. Price difference is significant as you know.
@HighVoltageKits22 күн бұрын
@alank808 I broke the 02 but I was really pushing it. My photon is still broken like yours.

@@HighVoltageKits It is great to know the limit of the little motor as the price vs power is highly marketable for my clients. If I can get the range up a bit nearer the photon I will be good. Most of the builds I make are for transportation bikes for working people. Thanks for your hard work and time Capt.

Now that you have exceeded the power capacity of the little motor and wasted the drive gear what`s next ? Your style of riding mimics an electric m/c not a power assist bike. I appreciate your testing of products but to exceed the power that the units were made for is for what. I guess this serves some people. Just not my reason for an electric assist bike. Thank you though for the testing to failure. But I was more interested in your testing of equipment being used for what it was designed for.

The information will get passed back to TOSEVEN and they can do with it as they please. If it was me I’d relocate the controller and expose the motor to the air and swap out the Nylon for PEEK and you have a motor that can sustain twice the power of a Photon for about 1/3 the cost. But Toseven need to put the work in. I felt that the motor could be happy at 1000 watts assist and it was. Hopefully you will enjoy the updates on the stock motor as well as the stock Hiboy bike more. Cheers

As you said though it serves some people. I find his testing extremely useful, he tests these items to their limits so people know exactly what the limits are and don't destroy their own motors. For example I commute a 40 mile round trip with some massive hills on the way back, before I modddified my bbs I'd always drive as being stuck to the uk's 250w's it'd take me hours to ride back and I just don't have that much time to spend getting back. But now with it modified I get exercise and its one less car on the road most days. So from me a big thanks HV for pushing these limits so we don't have to. 👍

@@HighVoltageKits Capt. I have run the toseven dmo2 for over a thousand miles. The heat buildup is greater with this motor than any other I have. I have 10 ebike builds with everything from cyc to bafang and throw in the tosevens. The way I ride is single track with no throttle and street riding. I have crashed two photons. Both on 52v. and factory settings with the latest firmware on them. My experience with the toseven dmo2 shows the motor runs very hot to the touch. I also have noticed the mileage on this motor is quite a bit less than any other motors i run. I attribute this to the heat build up which is due to a less efficient motor. Your thoughts on this if you please. Inefficiency yields heat I would think. But what do I know as I am vacuous so I have been told. I worked in co-generation at a power plt. for 40 yrs. Thank you for your replies.
