The Other Mother's narcissistic mask falls off as she offers Coraline the button eyes and the offer gets rejected. The voice acting in this is amazingly well done!

The bird is another spy for the mother? Maybe..
@toddcoffin4468

I think the bird is another puppet, because it is facing coraline when she goes to the other Mr bobinsky’s house and it turns to face her direction when she is going downstairs to the theater. But when the beldam comes she is now watching coraline so there is no use for it. That could be the spy watching coraline when she was all alone with the cat. You said the doll could move so why can’t the bird too?

I have a few thoughts on this 1. The bird topiary changes spots because the other mother is having a hard time keeping the world together because she’s running out of magic think of it like when a video game glitches and items change position 2. The other father reminds me of an old Irish tale that explains why jack o lanterns today. You can look it up if you want the full story but basically a man named jack tricks the devil multiple times to gain a longer life when he dies the devil can’t take his soul because he agreed he couldn’t in a previous deal and god refuses him entry to heaven so he walks the earth with nothing but a pumpkin. What if there is a soul trapped inside that pumpkin keeping it alive it’s the only organic thing down there that’s why the other father eats. This soul could have been in service to the bedlam for centuries and is sick of seeing kids die maybe scaring coralline isn’t an accident and the song lyrics I think all of the other fathers actions are on purpose because he’s trying to warn coralline he doesn’t want another kid to suffer

Maybe the bird moving and dissapearing is a sing, that the other mother rebuilds the other world and throws it togeather each time she goes from one 'room' to another. So leaving miss spink and forcible the world has been gone, so all the world building energy went into the theater. Then when she rebuild the garden, she forgot the bird?

About the colors the other mother brings up as button choices. Pink: The other mother uses this for herself. Its often associated with love and comfort, with undertones of deceit and something unsetteling. Vermilion: The other father shows this. It symbolizes both life and virtality, and also agression and anger Chartreuse: Used for Coraline. Its often used to make you feel excited and also symbolizes health.

Small datail. The horns behind the other father are from an antilope, which are known to be shy group driven animals. Where as the horns behind the other mother might be a ram's horns. They are known to be more agressive and direct.

My mom doesn't speak English, and all the videos I see about theories are in English. Even if I share all the proof there is about the movie, she doesn't want me to break the spells of the movie to her 😂😂😂 she likes happy endings so I keep all this for me. But still, we love Coraline.

When the other mother goes to touch Coralines nose. I think she more likely makes a motion to close Coralines eyes. She has her point and pinky fingers out, and hence makes more of a point to her eyes then her nose. That also makes sense with her statement '(...) see things out way". As a way of symbolising closing her eyes or making her blind.

that bird is freaky, I don't know how or why it could be moving the only thing that comes to mind is how miners would use birds to warn them of danger. however, since it appears to be a flamingo I did look up several symbolic and spiritual meanings of flamingos and found some interesting things first As a spirit animal, the flamingo swoops into your life to remind you of the need for balance, perhaps nudging you to look at areas of your life that may be out of alignment. It's a gentle prod towards seeking harmony within yourself and with the world around you. and secondly, In Christianity, for example, flamingos represent the truth. It's an analogy to the fact that flamingos' tongues can filter sludge water for food. Hence, people believe they represent the ability to filter lies and seek the truth. i thought both of these were interesting

I think the reflection of the other father in the mirror at the beginning is because of the angle of the camera. Coraline and the other mother are further down on the stairs, thus you can only see the fathers torso upwards and not coraline or the other mother
@cordyblue
@cordyblue 3 ай бұрын
Speaking of the reflection of the other father, it brings up a point I actually noticed the last time I watched Coraline. Maybe overthinking and overanalyzing here, but I noticed earlier on in the scene where they’re having dinner and the lightning hand strikes where Coraline questions “what rain?”; you can see her reflection in the window…but not the Other Mother’s in the window she’s sitting in front of. Maybe just an oversight, or even the angle she would have been sitting at, but in my opinion, the way Laika pays such incredible attention to small details, it seems like a stretch for that to be some kind of oversight in production. What do you think?

8:39 to me it looks like othermoter was aiming for coraline eye and not her nose, maybe it’s because how it’s shot that the perspective makes it look more closely She’s was going to scratching her left/right eye but was like “not yet soon she will see things are away”.(sorry, if my grammar and spelling was trash hopefully I could get my point across)

This might have been addressed already but considering their daughter found a doll that looked exactly like her, why didn't Coraline's parents ask more questions about the doll she found? Was that just another example of parental absenteeism?
@alternateendingsandedits6854
@alternateendingsandedits6854 3 ай бұрын
Coraline didn’t find the doll wybie found it in his grandmas trunk and gave it to her because I looked like her. Mel and Charlie don’t see the note from wybie saying this Coraline just tells her mother that the boys name is wybie when asked and that she’s way to old for dolls. I think her parents may have assumed that wybie or his grandmother made the doll for her

But also poor other wybie felt so guilty how he had to help the other mother to make Caroline want to stay in the other world also did Caroline really need to lock up her toy in the toy chest. I have an interesting piece of information for you; I think know what the little door that serves as the portal to the other world actually is in terms of normal world functions, I think it may be a milk door. I didn’t know about milk doors until I came across a video here on KZbin talking about home features that are no longer used but, the milk door was used in the old days when a milk man would deliver milk to your house. The milk door was actually a compartmant in the wall that could be accessed from both the inside and outside of the house, the milk man would deposit the milk in the compartment from the outside, and then whoever on the inside could retrive it and put it away or use it. Milk doors varied in size, shape and position on the wall, but some of the images do seem to line up with the size and placement on the wall of the little door in Coraline and since the Pink Palace is clearly a Victorian Era house/mansion, it seems totally plausible that it could have a milk door that was eventually bricked up when it no longer had a purpose to serve and seemed more like a hazard because honestly, I could totally see a milk door being a prime target for children's antics in the same way as things like dumbwaiters and laundry chutes. Another thought I wanted to share is about the cat; I have to wonder if the cat is actually a spirit or another fae type creature that has just taken the form of a cat. If so, it could explain why the cat doesn't like the Belldame/Other Mother but also doesn't seem to really be on Coraline's side either; he has something against the Other Mother, maybe a turf dispute over the Other World or something, and is just willing to assist Coraline when it's to his advantage against the Other Mother. The cat being a spirit or type of Fae himself, also explains how he can travel between the real world and the Other World the way does and how the Other Mother seems to have no control over him, because whatever power he has, regardless of any differences in abilities or requirements for nourishment, is at least equivalent to hers. One last thought in regards to Other Spink and Forcible quoting Hamlet; I'm not super familiar with the play but I know one of the central themes is the question of madness; Did Hamlet really see his late father's ghost or is he going mad; that theme doesn't feel like it fits super well with what Coraline is experiencing aside from perhaps the question of is what she seeing real or an illusion, but I do feel like the plight of Hamlet's betrothed might be a better fit. Ophelia feels like Hamlet doesn't care for her and as a result takes a, well, permanent swim in a river; in a manner of speaking. As far I am aware this, along with other events in the story, weighs heavily on Hamlet so maybe there's some kind of warning to Coraline about not allowing the feelings of neglect to cause her to become like Ophelia. Honestly though, the quoting of Hamlet could simply be due to Spink and Forcible just liking Shakespeare themes for their performances; if the 'King Leer' poster in real Spink and Forcible's apartment is anything to go by. Sorry for the little book here, but I just had to share some of these thoughts that have rolling around in my since watching your scene by scene anaylsis, and I have more thoughts and theories on the Other Mother, Coraline's Parents, Wybie, The Pink Palace, and Coraline herself.

Wow!! Nice observation! I had to Google a milk door (sorry, I'm not very bright). As a kid, I always thought it looked like a crawl space door, but I couldn't really find much of a connection other than the excessive amount of bugs lol
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 3 ай бұрын
I have heard of milk doors (never seen one in person) but it's strange that this door might go to another apartment (or... at least it does in the book, the movie seems to make one reference to a 4th apartment and doesn't clarify any further). I had a similar door to that one in a duplex I lived in, there was just a chest-level brown door that you could open and literally see into the neighbor's apartment if their door was open. It was weird and made no sense to me, but it was enclosed inside of the house, so it definitely wasn't designed for a guy delivering milk on the porch.

I think the bird is a spy for the black cat. I'm still of the opinion that the black cat and the beldam are not the same person and have a rivalry going on. I mentioned it in another comment. I think the bird was used to tell when Coraline would be alone. Which is why the other mother came personally to pick Coraline up instead of trusting other Wybie to bring her back. The bird disappears as soon as the beldam shows up. As if it were something that was not supposed to be there in the first place. I interpreted the nose near touch as a power play. The beldam speeds behind Coraline and then nearly touches her but refrains. After she lets her go to bed. That scene read to me as: I'm bigger than you, faster than you, and I can hurt you. You won't be able to run away from me. I chose not to touch you, but you saw how close I can get. Now I'm allowing you to go to bed in my world. Good night, daughter. It is a scary and badass flex scene. It implies she doesn't need consent but is humoring Coraline by playing along. As intelligent predators will sometimes do with prey. We all know the beldam loves her games.

I know I'm getting far ahead here but I really want to say this Near the end of the movie when the bedlam says to coraline, (you know I love you) you notice the fact that coraline didn't even deni that, she didn't try to say no you don't, instead she just says, ( you have a very funny way of showing it) My thoughts I think its because coraline knows that the other mother does love her but not the right way. if your kubo line theory is correct which btw I love, than the dark and twisted way that the beldam loves coraline cones as no surprise for me. If the beldam is really the moon kings daughter, (the moon king) who did every thing in his evil power who make darn sure that his daughters never feel even the slightest bit of love for a human being, going as far as to possibly take there eyes away to prevent them from falling love like kubos mom did, I think the beldams sick way of loving someone has a lot to do with her up bringing, she doesn't love coraline the right way because she doesn't know how to love her the right way, she wants someone to love, she wants to be loved, but of course her manipulation and the whole bottom eye thing is no way to love someone, not to mention, her wanting someone to love her for all the wrong reasons, your supposed to cherish someone's love for the love that it is and not as food. But that's not her fault, its her fathers fault, So that's my opinion on the beldam she knows little to nothing about love, she doesn't even know who she herself is due to her memory loss from the transformation from kubos guitar.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 3 ай бұрын
That is a very interesting way to think about! I love that! And, you're right, I think Coraline is so desensitized to how Mel and Charlie are that she doesn't fully recognize healthy forms of love, so Coraline probably does concede that the Beldam loves her on some messed up level. Kind of like an analogy for learning to heal from toxic relationships here.

Again, looked up what vermillion and chartreuse mean and…… Vermillion: Since ancient times, vermilion was regarded as the color of blood, thus the color of life. Chartreuse: enthusiasm, happiness, nature, growth, and youth. Like standard green, chartreuse is associated with the liveliness and the blossoming of spring. However, in contrast it can also stand for sickness, jealousy, and cowardice. I hope my comments aren’t too much.

So I just had this idea, in the movie Wybie says his grandmother says she was stolen, the twin sister that is. Could that mean she saw first hand what the other mother both looks like and has done? Or could that mean the grandmother and her twin sister BOTH were seeing the other mother and the grandmother managed to escape without her sister. ------ Another thing that's eating me is wybie calls coraline by her actual name the way she wants it when he says he was sorry for not believing her about that evil. That for me further proves she is still not in the real world. I hope to see of anyone agrees or shares my thought with either thoughts 😊

✋ Something I want to say about Wybie. I do think when he is introduced he is trying to impress Coraline. But not in the "oh a girl" kind of way. To me, it seems more like "this is my terf" kind of way. He's doing something he thinks is really cool and intimidating. His awkward posture is from his lack of experience with other kids and losing confidence. Suddenly appearing and scaring Coraline was relatively easy for him but when she bites back he doesn't know what to do.
